I hope Near allowed us to continue development of higan in his stead before he died, because otherwise... replicating the experience of the more of the original retro consoles will be impossible! |

On the one hand, the last commit on the Higan github repo was on August 18. On the other hand, its spin-off project Ares does in fact have more of the original retro consoles, as you put it, and was last updated yesterday. Its most recent proper release was just ten days ago. It has all the consoles Higan had, but also a much less confusing user interface. |

And lets not forget that MiSTer is getting really impressive for those who wants a N64 or older *fast* cycle level accuracy. Higan is responsible for even making this possible, so my hat is off to Near and crew for that, but I sure wish we soon can buy a PCIe FPGA card that can emulate everything pre-2000. MiSTer is still too pricey for what it does, but it does show the way forward. Post 2000, HLE is more interesting IMO, that's when games started to shift from metal-optimized to API-optimized games. Given that Vulkan and Direct3D 12 can easily emulate any other older 3D API (including OpenGL, Glide and other more exotic options), and the other APIs (Sound, Input, Video) are pretty much unchanged (as in, same underlying technology) since the 2000s, well... It should be possible to emulate most consoles, PS3 being the final boss methinks. |

Posted by wertigon Xbox 360 is the "final boss". PS3 emulation is quite good at the moment (RPCS3). AMD Ryzen 3700X | MSI Gamer Geforce 1070Ti 8GB | 16GB 3600MHz DDR4 RAM | ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero (WiFi) Motherboard | Windows 10 x64 |

If higan is to be updated, it should emulate: 1. All 5 ATARI consoles (the 2600 Video Computer System, the 5200 SuperSystem, the 7800 ProSystem, the LYNX Portable Color Entertainment System, and the Jaguar 64-bit Interactive Multimedia System - including its Jaguar CD Multimedia Player add-on). 2. The other 4 consoles from the 5th generation (the NINTENDO⁶⁴ - including its 64DD add-on, the original PlayStation from SONY, the SEGA SATURN, and the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer). 3. All 4 consoles from the 6th generation (the original Xbox from Microsoft, the Nintendo GameCube, SONY's PlayStation 2, and SEGA's Dreamcast). |

You'd have a higher chance of getting any of those things in Ares than Higan. In fact, two of them are already in Ares -- the N64 and PlayStation. |

https://ares.dev like, to be blunt, wanting to update higan is like wanting to change the underwear of an already buried body. |

Posted by Nicholas Steel I think it is either because: a) Near did not leave the domain with anyone else b) The project decided to leave Nears work as-is, out of respect for them No idea which one it is though, or if it is something else entirely, not really involved in the scene anymore :/ |
