Apparently Microsoft has finally changed the Windows 10 terminal colours from the traditional Windows 3.1 16 color palette to something a bit more readable.

Unfortunately, GNOME Terminal doesn't exactly make it easy to set a custom palette. There's a lot of cool colour schemes in the world, but while every terminal has the same basic colour settings, there's a bunch of weird colour-scheme formats; it seems like there's a great opportunity for somebody to write a tool to convert between them.

Preferably one that doesn't involve downloading shell-scripts from the internet and automatically running them.

The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

I like that Microsoft says it is because of modern high-contrast LCDs, when the colors are only a problem because LCDs are lower-contrast than CRTs were.

I tend to use bright schemes wherever I go so my terminal is usually pure black on white, cannot stand it when non block solid colours are used on a terminal screen, it just isnt right to me :P

All I want is a native xterm port for Windows, preferably as a cmd.exe (or whatever MS uses nowadays to render console apps) replacement.

cmd.exe uses the Console subsystem so the closest to "whatever MS uses nowadays to render console apps" would be... it was conhost.exe in Win7, at least.

Also, MS is trying to retire cmd in favor of powershell.
Alsoalso, Linux Subsystem for Windows will get you your lunixy bash interface.

Powershell is annoying, it needs some commands to be prefixed with .\ and you also need to run some specific command before you can execute a PowerShell script with the necessary privileges (can't just run Powershell as an Administrator).

    Install-Module -Name SpeculationControl -RequiredVersion 1.0.11
this string will just display an Open With dialog box for a blank (no name) file. Does anybody know how to get that command to actually work? It's taken from https://www.powershellgallery.com/packages/SpeculationControl/1.0.11

    Powershell is annoying

    No lie.

it needs some commands to be prefixed with .\

That is for running an executable, as opposed to an internal command.
IF you're in, say C:\MAME, you'd have to type .\mame64 to run the emulator, because it enforces a distinction between commands and files.

. is just the current directory, so it is the same as typing c:\mame\mame64.exe

and you also need to run some specific command before you can execute a PowerShell script with the necessary privileges (can't just run Powershell as an Administrator).

Welcome to everyone blaming Microsoft for user error, part seventy-four.

base16 sounds like what you want. It supports Gnome Terminal.

Cygwin had (has? haven't used it in years) a terminal that could run cmd.exe and other such programs. Don't remember the name but it looked good.

Yup, that's it. Although it seems to have some issues:
    Posted by https://mintty.github.io/

Mintty works on all Windows versions from Windows XP onwards. Similarly to other Cygwin/MSYS terminals based on pseudo terminal ("pty") devices, however, mintty is not a full replacement for the Windows Console window (by default running the Windows Command Processor / command prompt / cmd.exe). While native console programs with simple text output usually work fine, interactive programs often have problems, although sometimes there are workarounds. See the Wiki section about Input/Output interaction for hints, especially on the winpty wrapper.

    (my emphasis)

This does not actually go there and I regret nothing.
