Posted by jimbo1qaz When configuring the "Default Search Engine" there is an option to Provide Search Suggestions, try turning that off. You can then re-enable it showing results from your bookmarks, history etc. AMD Ryzen 3700X | MSI Gamer Geforce 1070Ti 8GB | 16GB 3600MHz DDR4 RAM | ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero (WiFi) Motherboard | Windows 10 x64 |

Posted by funkyass No, you can just press 'X' on the window and it closes down fine. But I lose my tabs, which is kind of a nuisance. Mozilla didn't do anything wrong, it's Google that I blame for hijacking a standard term to use as a browser name. Thanks for the tip. It does become more relevant, but I still don't know what to search for and "Chrome" still means the browser. "firefox ui crash memory bugzilla" doesn't give me anything relevant. Oh well. I suppose I should just get more RAM. That's the 2019 way to solve things, right? There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. You believed that you had actually held it in your hands. It was a photograph something like this. |

I meant literally using killall. firefox chome memory crash bugzila seems to be fruitful. but once they go full sandboxed multi-process the bug will never get fixed, since it'll become the os's problem. Posted by sureanem |

Posted by CaptainJistuce Oh, the irony, just imagine: this gem coming from the mouth of one of those hipster JavaScript Generation douchebags... who shits Electron junk from a Mac. Name how many Macs currently on sale do allow its RAM to be expanded by the user AFTER purchase date, without involving a reflow oven. So, in this case, "buy more RAM" translates nicely into "get another $5000 computer". Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Posted by Nicholas Steel I turned "Provide Search Suggestions" off years ago, before this bug began. Aaand I just got the Firefox unresponsive glitch... *after* turning Javascript off, with nothing open but several Twitter no-JS tabs open... and 1.5 of 8GB of RAM used. |

i'm not going to bother going through your troubleshooting steps. This was a deliberate change from Mozilla which they refuse to allow users to revert. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1171259 https://old.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/4zba5m/firefox_android_odd_suggestions_in_address_bar/ https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=858829 |

While you guys deal with Mozilla's "we know what's better for you" boneheaded decisions, they're too busy wasting their time (and maybe your donations?) working on AI junk nobody wants (but what they think it will make the world better... for software developers) with Ubisoft. YES, the very same Ubisoft as in "uplay" and "broken AAA videogames". Like, what the hell, man... Just what we needed, machine learning magic to make "bug-free" code... Can you start warning me about those slashdot links? I check the board at work, and back won't take you out of slashdot's mobile site. I just want to know what links to avoid. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Wait, Slashdot does play user-unfriendly tricks on mobile? That's... par for the course, it seems. I didn't knew since I don't browse the web from anything but Real PCs. Ah well :/ Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Posted by funkyass It's in regards to Firefox becoming totally unresponsive. If the multi-process stuff is disabled by a plugin or Web Extension than a website can lock up the whole browser, where as if the multi-process stuff is enabled it should only be the poor performing tab that gets frozen and not the Firefox UI/other tabs. There's an option to forcibly enable the multi-process stuff (which I've been using for over a year without issue) which may be necessary for Jimbo to benefit from it. Multiprocess Windows 2/2 Enabled by default Web Content Processes 9/8 this is bullshit. Because one time I had like 8 firefox processes eating ram and cpu... And I recall there was more than 1 firefox process open when it became unresponsive, sureanem-style. I just opened Twitter and it was already becoming laggy, at which point I turned off JS using uMatrix and opened Twitter's no-JS site, which then caused Firefox to freeze. |

Posted by jimbo1qazchanging something like that probably needs a full restart of firefox - its probably something it checks on load, but only then. Thats another issue glossed over when they fully ape Chromium's process structure. There is also the issue when you are trying to select some text, and you wind up dragging an image from many pages back... |

Posted by funkyass Disabling JS via uMatrix is instant and per-site (though I disabled JS in the global scope = all pages loaded from then on). I'm not sure if it's 100% effective, it seems to work via injecting CSP to block <script>, and network-filtering external JS: Posted by Firefox Console |
