This might be a controversial opinion and surely I am going to get a lot of flak for it, but regarding controls those obviously vary per-game. Furthermore, if one is playing on a PC, in many games the input could be more complex than just mapping mouse -> analog stick. For instance, in many games doing that results in a very "mushy" input because of the corrections applied internally to the joystick input. Add in the limits of the joystick and that the appropriate input scheme on the menu screen is often wildly different than that in the game, and the obvious solution emerges. Just like emulators ship with cheat databases, they should ship with information of how best to do controls. Ideally, packaged like some kind of lua script that reads certain hardcoded offsets and the controls, and then yields as output either button presses or straight memory injection. Then this could be grouped by genre, giving you one set of controls for racing games, one set for FPS games, and so forth. It would be sufficient with direct but game-specific mappings to achieve playability, and only for more advanced applications would one need to delve deeper into the matter and write scripts. Of course, this isn't "accurate". But neither is it to use a mouse and keyboard to start with. And if you have reproduction gamepads for each console, the problem is already solved. There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. You believed that you had actually held it in your hands. It was a photograph something like this. |

Posted by tomman No. The reasonable approach is to either develop using cross-platform frameworks, in which case it doesn't make much of a difference to port it (e.g. just a straight recompile), or to write for Windows but to test your software on Wine. If you write code targeting Windows XP/Windows 7, and don't use too exotic features, it usually works quite well. For instance, rumor has it that Blizzard, while not officially wanting to support Linux due to unclear PR reasons, went out of their way to make sure their games ran smoothly on Wine. It might be true, it might be false, but it's a matter of fact that the latest version of World of Warcraft runs with a "platinum" rating on Wine. Anecdotal evidence: most Windows-only games I play nowadays work fine on Wine. Posted by tomman How, do you mean? I downloaded Kega Fusion 3.64 (Windows) just now and ran Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with Wine 3.20 (32-bit). It ran stably at 60 FPS, when I enabled "Fast Forward" it shot up to "999" FPS. I don't have too much experience with Kega Fusion or the Sega Genesis, but I couldn't see any performance issues. Do you have a specific game in mind that didn't work when you tried it? It's true that Wine was utter garbage only a few years ago, but nowaday it tends to work quite well. The only issue I could find with Fusion was that the GUI looked ugly as hell like with any other Wine application (that black text without anti-aliasing on the gray background). As for Wine being native, it really is. It's a shim between the Windows and the Linux APIs. In the way if functions, it's closer to chroot than VirtualBox. Posted by tomman Fair enough. Posted by tomman Try using "save" instead of "export". It still uses inline CSS, but there isn't any bloat more than that. Sample, where I randomly colored some of them blue: Alternatively, if you're okay with having to edit in the colors yourself, try exporting to CSV and then converting to HTML. In their "defense," TVs reached their peak quite a few years ago, just like smartphones are doing now. It's just a panel with some connectors on it. The only distinguishing features are size and resolution, and to some degree minor characteristics like color and contrast. Aside from that, they're all the same. They don't wear out easily, there haven't been many improvements to the technology, and unless you're an American, you only need one. So how do you convince people into buying a new one (e.g. not used) if their old one still works fine? 4K is the only improvement I can think of after 1080p became commonplace, but if you only can get 1080p content anyway, what's the point? And thus, "smart" TVs were born. I am sure that we I own a 720p flatscreen TV that I bought off of craigslist or the local equivalent for around $30 ten years ago or so, and it still works fine. Why bother upgrading? Even if they'd be giving them away in the street, I would still have to physically install it for a negligible increase in quality. No profit in that. Sure, you can sell maintenance numbers of TVs just like people buy new light bulbs or refrigerators whenever the old one breaks. But the sales would be dismally low compared to up until now when there's a new {big, color, flat, digital, 720p, 1080p, 4k} TV every ten years or so. If you can convince people there is some actual value in upgrading before it breaks, then you can sell your televisions for much more. A 40" 1080p TV is less than $200 (new), and that's all you need. Say people buy a new TV every seven years, there are 700 million TVs out there getting replaced, that's a hundred million a year. At $150 a piece that's only $15B a year. Compare this to the current figure of $100 bil, and it's not hard to see why they're so desperate for innovation. I mean, the whole concept of smart televisions is absurd. Everyone I know, even people who are completely incompetent with technology, only ever uses their television as a screen. Either for terrestrial TV, or digital, or for Netflix from their laptop. I've never witnessed firsthand anyone actually use these "smart" features, except to switch inputs. If they're into technology, they might have an Apple TV or a Chromecast or something similar, or otherwise use their laptop with a wireless keyboard/mouse - they are much more comfortable to use than a finicky remote, they can play torrented movies, and they can play from obscure streaming websites. And if they aren't, they'd much rather use what they already know than to learn some new and complicated UI for no benefit. There's no scenario in which it serves any other purpose than a box ornament. There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. Posted by CaptainJistuce Not everyone lives in America. Sure, you ought to be able to get Netflix on there. But what about obscure, regional streaming services? Maybe if you live in the UK, you can get BBC iPlayer on there. But can every broadcaster in every country afford to port their "player" to each brand of televisions? Do they even care? Add in that many people like to watch dodgy soccer streams, IPTV, torrents, and similar, and it stands to reason that the compatibility and ease of use will never come close to the good ol' VGA cable. Maybe if the TV manufacturers start integrating Popcorn Time into their TVs, we could start talking. A TV signal is much worse than DVD quality. DVDs don't have grain, and have much higher resolutions. And at any rate, it's absolutely pointless and a waste of time to display either signal on a 4K monitor. The same goes for consoles, except maybe for the rare few who don't output through composite. The TV won't be your bottleneck, the signal will. Posted by BearOso Last time I used a smart TV, which was several years ago, they didn't have much of anything. That might have changed though. The average customer can't be arsed to sideload apps on their TV, but they would gladly stream from their computer or a chink IPTV box.
I much prefer VGA to HDMI. More common, and stays in. Nobody is forcing you to screw it in, but it makes sure it stays affixed unlike HDMI which flies halfway across the room if you sneeze at it. But yeah, HDMI, same thing. Still connecting a computer to it.
That's HDTV, I'm talking about normal TV. Yeah, that probably has better quality than DVD. Wouldn't surprise me.
What other consoles are there? Switch doesn't need a TV, and the PS4/Xbone are mostly irrelevant. Never heard of anyone owning one. There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. What about a compromise? You make a page on this server entitled something like embed.php, taking a parameter ?v=XXXXXXXXXXX, where v is the youtube video ID. This page has code something like this:
Then, posting a youtube link triggers the following, server-side 1) do GET to youtube to extract title 2) emit text as link to regular (non-embed) youtube, e.g. watch?v= 3) emit iframe to embed?v=XXXXXXXXXXX If you click on the thumbnail, it gets embedded proper inside the iframe. Otherwise, it's just around 4kb/embed. You could do all of this with JS, but I have a feeling it wouldn't be too popular. Likewise, you could proxy the embedded image to avoid leaking IPs to Google, but that's even more work. And the first two steps could be skipped, which would drastically reduce the work needed to implement. Thoughts? (You could also make embed.php fetch the title for you, but you'd end up making a lot of get requests unless you manage to cache it somehow) Personally, I think youtube embeds are useless. If I'd want to watch something, I'd take the 0.2 seconds it takes to middle mouse click it and watch it in a new tab. There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. All I'm saying is that smart TVs are vastly overrated, and that I've never seen anyone actually use them (except as a sluggish UI to click through to get to the AV / TV) because they'd rather use what they already know, and also because it makes piracy a lot more complicated than it should be. Posted by BearOso My sampling is heavily biased for sure, but I don't think it's that off. People play their games on PC, because there is no good reason to do it anywhere else. The only reason you'd want to get a console anyway would be either exclusives (and nobody wants to pay $300 for a game) or split-screen multiplayer (which nobody plays anymore). Same goes for portable gaming. When I was younger, people used to have Nintendo DSes, but nowadays everyone would just use their phone if they'd want to play games on the train or where-ever. Posted by CaptainJistuce No, of course not. A chink box is an cheap SoC running Android or Kodi, preloaded with IPTV/Popcorn Time/similar, with absolutely no regard for copyright law or other unimportant paperwork. Not all streaming devices that are manufactured in the People's Republic of China (e.g. all of them) are chink boxes. Just like how you'd refer to cheap, low quality routers as "chink routers". As for the HDMI thing, I don't mean that it's rare, but that if you'd want to connect a computer, VGA is slightly more common. But this might be a function of that people would rather permanently station some old laptop under it permanently connected than move them back and forth each time you want to watch movies. As more and more people are watching Netflix, though, Chromecasts are becoming more and more popular. Although most would just watch it directly on the iPad/computer screen, as watching Netflix is hardly a communal activity. Posted by tomman No man, that's obvious satire, how could you fall for this? ...I thought, until I googled it. He wasn't joking about the key events either. Here you can find an official code example detailing it. Posted by BearOso No, no, I wouldn't use it to refer to Chinese people, absolutely not. That would indeed be very offensive. But that seems to be the most common name for those kinds of products, at least that I've heard. Not sure what else you'd call them. Piracy-intended multimedia devices? China boxes? Chinese boxes? Two of these now start linking together a whole country/ethnicity with shoddy workmanship in a more 'official' sense, so I would argue it is much worse. (I think the list is a bit overbearing, I've heard many of these 'slurs' used in informal contexts by people who otherwise are not particularly racist. Churka, gajin, gringo, gwailo, gypsy, gora, half-breed, hillbilly, laowai, lebo, redneck, vatnik, and WASP are all ethnic slurs? I've seen "WASP" used in academic studies, and I don't know what else you'd call the nomadic group of people living in the Balkans. Wikipedia suggests "Romani people," but then you'd mix them up with Romanians, risk offending them, and also confuse a get a lot of people confused.) But I digress, this thread is not about the quality of random Wikipedia articles. That said, it probably is inappropriate to use in formal contexts, so it might be best to attempt to avoid such terminology in the future to avoid getting banned for hate speech. Posted by creaothceann Yeah, Nintendo is a notable exception, since almost all of their games are exclusives. For them, the amortized cost per exclusive goes down. I only mentioned the PS4 and Xbone as irrelevant consoles. As for portable gaming, I haven't seen many people using their Switches outside or in public locations. Posted by creaothceann True, although if you're not moving things around all the time it's not such a big deal. Also not that common on older laptops. What's the point of exposing IPs on the "Online users" page? If you want to post, you either have to visit the thread or the login page. And any such visit exposes your UA+IP. By comparing the visit times ("guest with IP X browsed thread Y, then user Z opened that same thread"), it'd be trivial to get anyone's IP. Even if you don't browse as a guest but just go straight to the login page, you'd still show up on the logs. I get it for bots, but why do it for humans if you don't do it when they're logged in? What about at least masking them, like masking "185.220.101.33" into "X.X.101.33" or ".101.33"? Assuming it's even vaguely similar to that in the git repository, it'd be a very quick change to make in online.php:

You could accomplish something similar without the 3D TV though with a regular display (preferably IPS) and 3d glasses. Color would be so-so, but not atrocious if you'd go for the good ones (blue/yellow). You would need software, I presume there already is some that you'd just have to coerce into doing what you want, but the glasses are less than $1 a pop so it'd still be much cheaper than a whole new TV. I don't follow the news that much, and I still heard about it. I'm no expert, but I think definitely things are going to happen there. For better or for worse, it might turn out like Libya or Syria. But it also might turn out like Tunisia, or somewhere in between. Probably, they are not reporting on it that much since the blackout is over. But during the blackout (e.g. the period of time you couldn't read news), it was big news. Anyway, I'm glad to hear you're okay. Posted by BearOso Why, though?
