That's some pretty impressive work, Screwtape.

Not sure if there is a good place to say it, but reading a GameFAQs thread on SNES emulators (which is about as expected) someone called a certain emulator Hogan.
That name is awesome! :D

Hulkamania is running wild, Brother.

I think I saw it written like that once or twice. Well, the o is next to the i on a qwerty keyboard so it's bound to happen once in a while I guess.

You can also setup the music tempo to your liking (slow/default/fast), something I've never seen in any other game I've played to date.

SFC Tales of Phantasia allows you to change the pitch of the music, though afaik, it doesn't carry over outside of the menu/track player for some reason...Plus it has a Singing dog who "sings" the opening theme. (Non dog version - The original SFC audio, while impressive, doesn't sound nearly as clear obviously, despite what the title of the video says).

Great little SNES game I just discovered: Super Chase H.Q

Very short but pretty fun. 6 stages in total. You can only reach the 6th stage if you don't use any continue.

Emulator recaps:

- Kega Fusion: The undisputed king of 32X emulation, the only one to get a perfect 10 on the commercial ROM section (basically: if it was officially released, Fusion will run it just fine), and it only lost its crown of perfection because Surgical Strike took over two decades to get ripped. You simply can't get wrong with Fusion if you actually care about the 32X. However, the clock is running out for this legend: as a proprietary binary blob, it's unlikely you will be able to run it as-is on future distros (or even in some current ones!), and it seems Snake dropped off the radar for good. If you're at Windowsland, you will be fine... until MS decides it's time to drop x86-32 for good (which WILL happen someday, maybe sooner than you think!)

- PicoDrive: A relatively late newcomer to the 32X scene, yet it shows some strong compatiblity that far surpasses everything ever made... except for Fusion. Yes, it's still a bit rough around the edges, a few games still give it trouble, and there are at least two unplayable ROMs on it (one is a handegg game which we can forget, and the other is Motherbase/Parasquad), but on the CD-ROM and homebrew departments, it gets a clean pass, which is no small feat. Plus, it's the only one actively developed (or so it looks), so you should have it as a plan B in your arsenal. And it's the only one you can use on ARM toys, and as a bonus, it's also available as a libretro core so you can play it on the libretro-enabled frontend of your choice. Its default standalone UI is quite useable too. Unfortunately, during testing this emulator exhibited intermittent controller issues (6-button pads getting detected as 3-button pads, inputs not working at times with some games, ghost devices plugged to Player 2 socket), although it was not that hard to deal with those, it was still an annoyance (hence the quarter-point penalty on the final grade)

It's too bad Kega Fusion is/was closed source

PicoDrive for me is hit or miss. Games like Virtua Racing 32x works fine but something like Virtua Fighter just hangs right after the player load screen. And Virtua Fighter 32x is actually a pretty decent port of the arcade. Virtua Racing 32x otoh...well, it beats the Megadrive/Genesis port at least.

Based on the arcade game Super Chase... I've played that one, it is pretty fantastic.
Important things lost in the home port: The arcade marquee has red and blue lights that start flashing when you engage your target.

(There's a few games in the Chase HQ series, and ALMOST NONE OF THEM convey this in the titles.)

Yeah, just noticed it's based on an arcade game (Super Chase : Criminal Termination) which I was also unfamiliar with. Obviously, the arcade is technically light years ahead of the SNES game but in a way, the fact I was unfamiliar with either games didn't create any expectation. I'd say the SNES game is, on its own, impressive given the limitations of the system. Sort of like Jr. Pac-Man was impressive for the 2600/VCS.

Also, although most of the spoken lines of the arcade were cut, they did kept the "This is Nancy ^_^" line intact.

The flashing lights in the marquee are just impossible to port to the home version.
...
They're also rather eye-catching. Turns out it is a REALLY good way to make people notice your game on the floor.

If it's those seen in this video; yeah, unless the home ports came with some kind of peripheral that you'd connect somewhere, that would indeed be hard to replicate in an home port.

I think if someone really wanted to, you could possibly get the lights to work if you built a MAME cabinet or something.

edit: Actually, just found one such example of someone doing just that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMFDmJeGO6Q

In my testing, PicoDrive ran Virtua Fighter just fine (I'm not good at fighting games overall, so I just endured like the first 3 fighters), with the only broken thing being the win animations you get after finishing with each fighter: you're supposed to get a fancy animation with "WINNER" on top, but instead all you get is a mostly static frame with a corrupted model of the winner.

As for the 32X Virtua Fighter being a decent arcade port, that's because Sega's AM2 did the port themselves, which makes sense. In the case of Virtua Racing, it seems the home console ports were done by a different team.

Fun fact: the Japanese version of Virtua Racing has SRAM backup save (for record times?). The export versions lost that feature (most likely as a cost cutting measure). But hey, at least they did changed the main menu colors (which were quite unreadable on the JP original), and the "VIIIIIIRTUA RACING!" chant (the JP one is lazy as hell).

Just got Virtua Fighter 32x it to work.

I was/am using the libretro port of PicoDrive and didn't noticed before there's a dynamic recompiler on/off option (it was on by default). Turning it off solved the crash issue.

So. EU just brainfarted and voted for even more draconian laws (anyone surprised)?

Highlights from the adopted legislation:

* Link tax mandatory
* Screening of user content mandatory
* The copyright of any recording from any sporting event belong to the sporting event arranger.

The only comfort is that this will further erode public support for copyright completely...

Welp...nice knowing you youTube.

Honestly, not surprising, but still disappointing. Regarding article 13 I don't care if Europe wants to pass this stuff, but the problem is -the internet being what it is, a lot of those things are going to be applied world wide even if YT is based in the U.S. I don't know if I buy the whole "MEPs accidentally voting the wrong way" thing...Well they either did, in which case, they, you know, probably shouldn't be MEPs, or they did not accidentally entered the wrong vote and are just saying that to avoid getting heat.

As for this specific referendum, you had to vote YES to oppose Article 13 and NO to back it. With buttons designed in accordance with the common UX principle of "as similar to each other and close together as possible," it's no wonder mistakes happen.

Yeah, their system sounds like an utter mess. From what I read, seems like there have been voting errors both ways on this.

I don't know how this will play out but many youtubers I've followed are saying youtube's Content ID system is already out of control, and has been so for a while. Making a 20min video with a 5 second bit from the Jurassic Park theme? Claimed; meaning the video is still up but the youtuber can't earn any cash from it. Worse; I think the copyright claimer is getting money out of it instead. So if they have a video with 2+ million views with a 5sec piece of copyrighted music or whatever the claimer is making money out of the entire video, not just from the duration of the copyrighted part (which would amount to less than 1% of the video). I mean, seems fair I guess.

Anyway, sounds like this thing will make matters even worse.

Started Resident Evil 2 (the 2019 game -not the PS1 original). It's pretty amazing so far. Playing the Leon story (am on PS4 non-pro).

I've only made it to collecting the three medallions but I've actually restarted a game from the beginning because I missed the shotgun the first time around.

I like that they buffed the knife. To balance this out a bit it eventually breaks down (you can find other knives of course). When you get grabbed by a zombie or whatever you can do a guaranteed counter attack using L1 but it will use like a third of your knife's "health".

The "Licker" creatures are genuinely scary in this game. The only way I was able to kill one by accident was to make them eat a flash grenade (using the counter attack/L1) then shotgun their face in. Maybe it was just a fluke and not a guarantee method, not sure.

NCR 2019 Day 1:

Good play by both of them. Daigo clearly got into his head there for a bit, just walking up and throwing him over and over... I'm kinda surprised we don't see more Dictators in tournaments.

Daigo probably studied the hell out of the match-up after he lost against problem at the redbull kumite last time (and lost pretty convincingly despite an impressive comeback one round).

I just wish we saw a Ryu or two once in a while at these tournaments; he's actually pretty fun to watch when played at a high level I guess he's just not viable at super high levels.

If you're interested in watching a playthrough of the 2019 Resident Evil 2 game, than I strongly suggest you watch ProJared's playthrough on his Youtube channel (he does 2 complete playthroughs).

I avoided looking at any playthroughs as I'd rather get as fewer spoilers as possible (gameplay spoilers that is -story wise, there's not much to spoil and the original has been out for like 20 years.)

So... how do you know the product you've bought suck without testing it first?!

$ON¥ pls, get a clue!

Well, I guess they don't want people to abuse it by playing it then demanding refunds. It's better than nothing I suppose though the "no refund after you started to download" rule should be after you completed the download.

edit: Well, since on PS4 you can sometime play part of the game after a partial download, it kinda makes sense.

reicast-libretro seems to work pretty well. It had quite a few improvements vs standalone, though I believe they either recently were or soon will be merged into upstream master, as well. Were you using a stable release or building from latest git?

+1 to reicast-libretro.

I even manage to get full speed with a lot of games on my old A-10 6700 (I get a stable 60fps with Soul Calibur for example). If you can't quite reach 60fps, lowering the internal resolution to 320x240 will help (although, it will look like dog shit of course) but hey, I can play VF3TB full speed this way.

So if I got this right what we're seeing in the higher res pics is effectively the original artwork/tile map or whatever before they get scaled down by the hardware somehow?

Pretty damn impressive either way.

Best (and only afaik) beat-em-up-RPG on the NES.

I recently discovered the GBA remake which I wasn't even aware existed until then:

It's pretty much a faithful remake of the original but with new artwork, moves, animations etc. Just make sure you pick "Attack rule = none" before beginning a new game; doing so will disable the friendly fire/punches/kicks.

On PS4, the original Borderland GOTY. Not too expensive, for a re-release at least... You can possibly get it for even cheaper on steam. edit: and like mentioned above, it's a free update if you already purchased it on steam.

Well, it doesn't get scaled down, just subsampled–it takes one pixel and uses it to fill a wider area, rather than taking an average which is what usually happens when you scale down. So even if you'd scale it down to native resolution in the end, it would still look "better" than naïve/fast subsampling.
(Better is subjective–in some games like F-Zero, "proper" scaling in my opinion looks like trash because the graphics were drawn so they'd look good with "bad" subsampling)

Got it. Thanks for the explanation.

Too bad there's (least I'm assuming) no way to mod an SNES to do the same.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia - NDS. Played on the libretro DeSmuME - 3069551. Btw big thanks to bearoso for all his work on it.

Bad Ending run

Good Ending

Didn't had to look up any guides to get the good ending. I mean, honestly it's pretty easy to figure out, they even show you the missing villagers you didn't rescue and based on that you can guess where they're hidden. Whereas something like SOTN was more cryptic if you didn't already know.

Game is pretty great. Last Iga-vania unfortunately, but it's a pretty good note to end with. Also the portraits artwork style is much better than the anime ripoff we got with the first two NDs 'vania imo. More reminiscent of SOTN's style.

Speaking of iga Bloodstained is getting a June 18 release.

edit: Also WarioWare: Touched!

If you're emulating the game with DeSmuME, make sure you select the interpreter core not the JIT one, otherwise it will crash when you attempt to begin the game.

Definitely a big improvement. Though I do prefer 2d sprites for these games I knew there were probably not going to use them. Still excited for the game either way.
