I just watched that Capcom Cup match. That was some lame-ass bullshit. Two all-time great players facing off with two of the all-time lame-af-est characters. SF5 at its worst...

I kind of like Abigail tbh, if only because he is (or was anyway) ridiculously broken. Rashid oth is not a fun character to watch, I would agree on that. Him or Cammy for most boring character imo.

Abigail has gotten pretty nerf-ed in S4 -he's still viable I think for a tank character, but his most broken tech has been toned down quite a bit. Itabashi is getting back on the 'Gief train (who has been buffed himself) as a result. Daigo is getting back to Ryu. So we have a pro player playing Ryu this season. Crazy stuff.

I mean yeah, ideally, every hacks should have been tested to work on hardware but back in the old (ZSNES) days it was not uncommon stuff would only be tested on ZSNES and the chance of some of the older hacks (some of which were actually pretty decent) being fixed are slim to none. So as long as everything is optional and it's made clear this is not how the hardware worked, I think it's fine.

From what I remember "addmusic" (for SMW hacks) was one of the biggest culprit of hacks not working on hardware.

Speaking of Pokemon, I just finished Silver on the GBC. Well, I got the credits anyway. I haven't done the post credit game (Kanto region I think).

My party pretty much consisted of really low level characters and one outrageously overpowered one (the very first Pokemon you can pick from the three actually). Guessing this is not really the intended way to play and I didn't initially set out to do it this way but after a while my evolved Cindaquil was really the highest level of the party so most fights were fought by it so naturally it got all the exp... and then of course the gap kept widening as the level of enemies kept getting higher so I had even less incentive to use them and so on...

Even wild Pokemon were not really worth it (from what I found anyway: I didn't look at any guides/faq), I captured some but didn't want to spend a lot of time leveling them up just so they could be at the same level as my main. I know there's a "weak/strong against" type x system but even against types that my main was weak against it was still basically one-shot-ing everything and receiving next to no damage (plus I had the rest/sleep talk moves learned for those rare cases where one shot wasn't enough). I didn't need to farm for exp/levels either. So tldr; I didn't had to play very strategically 99% of the time.

The others were essentially used for moving around (HM02/03/04 etc).

So, obviously not going for a competitionist run and I'm probably not gonna do the post credit game (which is pretty neat that there's such a thing) but it's an impressive game for the GBC still (even though the world of the game -never watched the anime so can't comment on it, is absurd beyond anything I've seen in any RPG where everything and anything revolve around Pokemon).

I very seldom have cola nowadays (no particular reason), but when I do, I'd very much prefer the full-fat version regardless of brand. There's always something off when I drink any off those "lite" or "sugar free" versions, akin to chewing plastic when you're expecting nougat (not that I've had any experience of the former :P)

Likewise: rarely drink any now, when I did however, on some rare occasions that I would buy diet the difference would always be striking. It's not just a matter of Pepsi vs Coke at that point; if you can't tell the difference blindfolded between regular and diet, honestly I don't know what to say (and at that point might as well avoid soda altogether). Some people actually prefer the taste of sugar free weirdly enough.

On topic after seeing an AGDQ run of it I decided to give another chance to ActRaiser 2 (I must have played/rented it as a kid once when it came out, didn't like it and pretty much didn't played the game since).

This was on easy mode. The main difference is that you don't get the last stage, plus I think enemies have more HPs you have 1 or 2 less magic (your main source of damage for bosses) on normal. Things like that but if you're having a difficult time with jumping and the controls then easy won't really help you. I've looked at a playthrough of normal and it doesn't seem that much harder.

Honestly, when all things is said is done and now that I played the game I can say, it is indeed not a very good sequel imo. It feels cheap compared to the first game. Sure, the city-building aspect of the first game was mostly a gimmick to make the game longer (it's pretty linear and there's no real depth to it unlike a proper-city building game) but seeing your cities on the world map exactly as they were built from the angel's POV was awesome.

The level design of 2 is pretty bad compared to the dungeons of 1 I thought. Likewise for the bosses. I know there weren't particularly complex or impressive in the first game but here it's just about using magic two or three times and good bye boss.

Oh and 2 has a password system instead of proper saving, kinda furthering the argument that it is a cheaper (figuratively and literally) sequel.

So yeah, there's plenty of problems with the game and the controls is not the biggest problem imo. It's not a horribly bad game or anything, just doesn't live up to the first game.

Good Ending:

Normal Ending:

Bad Ending:

The (cart-only) game sells for more than a $100 on ebay for some reason...

Also fun fact, the game has some kind of copy protection, no doubt meant for copiers back then (not gonna check but think ZSNES activates the copy protection too). It's not the Super Metroid kind of copy protection where you're just greeted with a "It is a serious crime to copy video games" message at start up but rather the kind that screws with the player. So about 5-10mins in the game, when you reach the Atma boss fight if something is detected, the boss will just have infinite life. Something about ROM mirroring I think.

As for the game, pretty good imo; lots of neat visual tricks too (all done by the SNES, no co-processor help unlike MMXs) Perhaps a bit on the short side; the game relies heavily on replaying stages to get the items you couldn't obtain before. It kinda has a MMX feel to it ( which were also made by Capcom obviously).

More new developments:

I've installed RetroArch, and gotten it working. Man, RetroArch is an impressive achievement, and it's great that there's an easy way to obtain and use emulators on Android without having to wade through Google Play, but everything about RetroArch always feels unfinished. For example, RetroArch has a nice Android-style UI with touch support and scrolling, but because it's a full-screen SDL app it hides the task-switching soft button, and the only way to switch to another app is to completely shut down RetroArch. For another example, it's so easy to download new cores that you can do it by accident while trying to scroll through the list, but the only way to *uninstall* a core is to use Android's "delete this application's entire configuration" feature.

Retroarch has a bit of a learning curve at first when it comes to configuring everything but once you're familiar with it, it's pretty smooth sailing. Though I never used the Android port so I can't offer any advice in this regard.

Just curious, what kind of performance do you get on your device with different cores? Mostly wondering how Higan and Snes9x perform on it.

I'm not Screwtape, but I've used Android RetroArch for SNES gaming before. The bsnes cores (including bsnes-next) are next to unusable on my HP Touchpad (yes, old) and most of my Android phones (including the not-so-old Nexus 4) but if I want to go frame-by-frame so I can save-scum 100 Super Jumps in Super Mario RPG it'll do.

Let's see, the Nexus 4 has a...ahh, Krait CPU...never really heard of it. ARM-based, from 2012 if I got this right. Yeah, would have been surprised if it ran full speed. Well, at least full speed is achievable with 9x on phone devices like this so that's good.

Posted by Screwtape
I haven't bothered with SNES emulation, but I can't hit full speed with the Mednafen PSX cores. mGBA works quite nicely, though.

If you can stomach the prehistoric type of games design they had, you could also try the Game & Watch gw-libretro core

It's quite nice, though not all games right now are simu/emu/recre-ated, like my personal favorites: Fire and Greenhouse. It should work well on mobile too, given that they were mobile games themselves.

edit: Or alternatively I guess, use the Gambatte libretro core to play Game & Watch Gallery on GBC which have the originals and also features a remixed version of those G&W games.

Link's Awakening remake for the Switch.

A lot of the original game's charm came from the extreme limitations of the original console. Some screens were so packed full of stuff that the developers were forced to butt tiles against one another that normally would require an empty "wall" tile in-between. The game's "descent into madness" theme worked really well even the most simple and obvious things were low-res pixel art that required some amount of interpretation.

Yep, that looks like a Link's Awakening remake alright (also I didn't even know about this Nintendo Direct Event, so I thought it was kind of weird they would announce this right now)

I tend to prefer the originals' look in those cases, but this looks plenty fine to me.

Honestly, it depends how it plays out. Zelda 4 did have a cartoony nature to it, but it kinda doesn't sustain through the entire game.

I likely would've made it with more of a loose, floaty painting aesthetic rather than the polished cartoon look they've chosen. But I don't think they're doing this from a place of love. It is a shameless cash grab, and that's what it looks like to me. I COULD BE WRONG.

Well, as much as would ideally prefer a 2D, hand-drawn (maybe even pixel-art style closer to the original), less cartoony style, I've come to expect that pretty much any remakes we're getting is going to use this sort of style (or something close to it).

So I think about horrible remakes like Rocket Knight or Sonic 4 and all things considered feel it's not that bad.

Basically, it could have been worse.

Didn't see a lot live due to Japan time but Guilty Gear's Top 8 -especially Grand Finals - Summit vs Chachacha were hype.

Speaking of GG, greatest Evo moment ever.

SFV top 8 were pretty good actually. It's amazing what a couple frames of lag reduction can do, especially at higher levels. Jyobin - Punk was the best match imo.
