https://helmet.kafuka.org/bboard/lastposts.php exists but doesn't group all posts from a single thread.

Is Last Posts any better this way?

And no, I'm not making URLs clickable. At least not right away. I mean, it'd interfere with everything. Or maybe I find a Very Big But Nice Regexâ„¢ that can handle all that.

I think Last Posts now lists *threads* with new posts, but only links to the *last* new post instead of the *first* unread post.

But now that the forum has an RSS feed, my RSS reader (hi, NewsBlur!) will do the unread tracking for me, so I don't mind if it the forum doesn't.

I'd rather people take two seconds and use the URL tag like they're supposed to than let the board handle it. I've seen this break in spectacular ways way too many times, and sometimes I'd like to paste something URL-like and not have it automatically turn into a link thank you very much.

    Bare url: http://example.com
    Url in a bbcode: http://example.com
    Bbcode url gone silly: http://example.com
    Url in an image tag:
That same image's url bare: https://helmet.kafuka.org/bboard/plugins/rssfeeds/feed.png
An url with a smiley inside: http://example.com/o_o/what ← yeah that breaks it, but then again smileys have always sucked.

    I just might do that.

And take the opportunity, since I'm on my phone, to test emoji 😺

Can we remove the youtube tag? It is INCREDIBLY annoying.

It's 2018 and emoji works beautifully in elinks, so +1 for removing smilies.

Not sure what Jistuce's beef with the YouTube tag is; I like getting to see the thumbnail and title of a thing before I actually click the link to watch it.

Personally, I'm fine having it available. Although I believe it should only be used in moderation, and if I quote a post containing a YT tag, I manually edit it into a URL instead so it doesn't load the preview in every quoted post.

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

It generates a thread full of big images(or a year later, a thread full of big gray "video has been removed" blocks), and after a couple vids are linked, it starts slowing things down a lot.

In an ideal world, people would link videos with a short description. Failing that, a cryptic URL is less intrusive than a full video player.

In other words: people browsing from (OH MY GOD!) older/underpowered devices (MEEE!!!) will feel like landing into a minefield when opening a page full of embedded videos. Flashblock is a godsend for those cases (yes, it works with HTML5 video too, making places like "that asshole known as the xscreensaver dev" blog USABLE), but development on it seems to have been discontinued and won't work on whatever Mozilla is trying to pass this week as a "web browser".

So my vote is... don't bother. Or if you must, at least have a (OPT-IN!) checkbox somewhere to enable rendering of embedded videos.

I was actually considering making it opt-in earlier... I might as well.

Update: a'ight fuck this, if PHP is gonna be hostile I'll just not make it opt-in.

    > PHP

2007 called, it wants its meme language back.
Didn't you got the memo that says all the kool kidz in the block now shit Javascript from their very expensive Macbooks!?

If I ever were to write a message board software (hint: it won't happen), I would pick Java Enterprisey, naturally.

I hate to say it, but modern php is actually a competent language. Just like modern java. I'd just use rust these days though.
