Bragging about CANTV is like bragging about your Lada or your Trabant. It's a weird fetish of sorts.

Yeah, a friend who originally worked in Shaw told me Shaw was doubling their speeds on new and existing accounts today. I'm on 75Mbps, so it should go up to 150Mbps once I restart my gateway. I'd still have to check that when I get home though.

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

From what I heard its only for shaw 150 and 300 accounts. an increase in upload would've been nicer.

Well that kinda sucks... but personally I'd rather have them just drop my bill by half than doubling my rate. :D

Our 100/100 seems meagre now. It doesn't seem like it will go up anytime soon, either.

I remember already getting that level of service when I was working in Japan back in 2007. And it was only around $38 at the time. How much are you paying nowadays?

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

About 3000 yen, I think? Nothing has really changed.

That hurts you know? :D At work we get around 300/100, still nowhere near your numbers though.

Wow, it's still crazy cheap there... wish I could get that speed at that price here... <sigh> first-world problems

Good old home connection. Worse than most of the country but better than most of Venezuela. I'll take it.

We can get 1000/100 over DOCSIS 3.1 here, but I don't use anything that justifies paying almost double for it. So I'm fine with 100/10:

We have a municipal fiber provider in the town ~5 mi away that does 1000/1000 symmetric like yours for cheap and wants to provide service here, but our town has a monopoly agreement with Mediacom that they're fighting against.

And that's how they circumvent anti-monopoly legislation. Choice is merely an illusion.

Whenever someone here says that "everything in 'murica is wonderful because they have laws preventing anarchy and protecting your rights" and the like (wise words from someone that has never step a foot outside their country), I refer them to posts like this. (Sadly some will still insist that I'm in the wrong/Internet is full of radicals/whatever...)

Why the hell USA is so ass-backwards with stuff like utility/service providers? Oh, I guess the answer involves politics :/

I'd love to post some happy numbers, but unfortunately I am a Cox Communications customer.

Top-left corner of the graph is 12:00 AM, bottom-right is 11:59 PM. Shades of green represent successful pings, while red indicates a ping timeout. (The long red streak around 9:00 AM is when a technician was fumbling around with our line.) It's been more or less like this since last Wednesday. We pay $95 a month for this.

    I love monopolies.

I was thinking more in the line that the answer involves money... but I guess it's the same difference :D

Aaaand... my CANTV-tier CANTV has been down since last Friday, starting at 2:30 PM.

Phone is dead (no dial tone), DSL is dead too (modem synchronizes, but no DHCP server will ever respond). Apparently this is a city-wide outage, which sadly is too common. Trying to report the case to CANTV is useless: their call center is pretty well shielded these days (try to report the voice service -> "Your phone line is already reported!"; try to report the DSL service -> a endless automated menu that always leads to a brick wall - it's impossible to talk to an human nowadays).

I'm posting this fron shittyass craptacular Movistar 3G, which surprisingly works at useable speeds at early mornings, but forget about using it during the rest of the day. I would post a speedtest, but since this thing is a dumbphone, all I have for now are the 25MB (!!!) of my service plan, something completely incompatible with the Javashitfest of the Modern Internets.

    Estimated time to repair: E_NOT_A_NUMBER

This is pretty much par for the course in the US, too. Doesn't matter if you're an individual or a business, either; I tried to call Coca-Cola to fix one of our soda fountains at work and got hung up on three times in a row by their automated phone system.

    Anyway, new modem, new hope:

We still get occasional blips of high pings and/or dropped packets, so I'm not entirely convinced our old modem was bad. I think Cox's signal quality is just terrible and the new modem is better equipped to handle it.
