you meant to say update your copy of VLC?

Nope. Not VLC itself; the youtube.luac file. The (luac) file that comes bundled with the latest version of VLC is different than the one linked. Tried a fresh install of the latest 3.0.11 version without updating the luac file and all it did when trying to play the video was to show a thumbnail of the video for a brief moment and then stop.

Alternatively install JDownloader 2, then while the program is running open a Youtube page, copy the URL and it'll present you with a myriad number of choices of video quality you want to download.

    I just use youtube-dl.

I haven't used that in a while since the stuff I wanted seemed to fail with it. I wonder if they've improved things a bit.

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

I use both JDownloader and youtube-dl:

    - JDownloader has a GUI (it's a rather fat Java/Swing application after all) which gives you plenty of choice and control - from selecting A/V quality (from HD on next-gen codecs down to postage stamp sized on FOSS codecs, or even audio/video only) to controlling the network part of the transaction (retries, speed limits), all from a comfy, user-friendly UI. Plus it works for pretty much every file locker under the sun (not only video sites) and then some. JDownloader has been the trusted companion for years of any serious anime fan (even those ones that actually pay for stuff instead of just pirating everything: just tell it your Crunchyroll credentials and say goodbye to license expirations, for example)

    - youtube-dl is lightweight for its CLI-only nature. You're still under control, but you now need to know the exact commandline switch magic enchants to achieve what you want to do, but if you're a CLI freak that means automation/scripting comes for free. And you need it anyway if you choose mpv as your primary video player to stream stuff. It's pretty nice to take any URL of a site with embedded video, pass it to mpv, and let youtube-dl figure the magic to skip all the useless HTML and let you have your way with the actual media instead of figuring out how to rip video links from some Javascript disease (or you can actually do that and script it into a proper host module for youtube-dl, then send the push request upstream!).

Both feature frequent updates, and you have to ensure that those get installed of time as video and filesharing sites are known for not offering any kind of "API stability" for an "API" that they don't even formally offer :P

All Windows 10 software because I am a skrub.

Bulk Crap Uninstaller for Windows. Does everything except remove Windows Edge. Has only slightly broken my system. FOSS.

Cheat Engine, now open source and available for OSx and Linux.

    Homebank, FOSS personal finance software.

LazPaint, FOSS alternative to Paint, lightweight, easy to use, all the features amateurs need.

Scenarist by Kit, FOSS writing and screenwriting software. Lots of useful features. USE THIS IF YOU ARE WRITING ANYTHING.

Been diving into FreeCAD during the summer since my student license of SolidWork ran out, and I can't be arsed begging for a new one. It has been an interesting experience.

To sum it up, I still think the premium on SolidWork is worth paying if you are working professionally with CAD, but if it's just for hobby purposes like me, then get FreeCAD. It is an awesome tool to learn, in some ways more capable than SolidWork, but bugs, unintuitive features and a general lack of consistent reworking tools keeps messing me up (e.g. try creating a model with 30+ features, then go back and change the base sketch to include a small pocket or something - ouch :()

    Speaking of youtube-dl...

The 'murican MAFIAA, always afraid of technology (because "OHNOEZ PIRACY!!!!", aka MJ Bieber Taylor Swift "$CURRENT_HOLLYWOOD_FAD would have to conform with a solid silver airplane instead of a solid gold airplane OHNOEZ THE HORROR!!!!") has delivered the tactical DMCA nukes over Microsoft GitHub, killing the repo (and many of its clones)

    https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/2020/10/2020-10-23-RIAA.md
    https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24872911

Of course since MAFIAA refuses to acknowledge that the Streissand effect is still a thing, people is mirroring the hell out of the original Git repo elsewhere (this is what you get when you let lawyers mess with computerizers: total and complete ignorance about how software really works). Not even freakin' Nintendo is going ballistic despite having their equivalent of their soiled underwear spread around the Internet.
Downloads are still active at their homepage: https://youtube-dl.org/

Time to tear apart the MAFIAA? Nah, nobody cares because lazyness / not communist enough :/
Also: the DMCA is a really bad law that everybody is abusing it for whatever purpose they see fit (even if there are no actual copyright infringements happening!)
As for youtube-dl, I guess it's time for a much-needed rebrand since the application can actualy download stuff from waaaaaaaay more places than just YouTube (it can even serve as a generic download manager in a pinch). Just like XBMC became Kodi because noone is using it on Xboxes anymore.

Maybe you missed where someone PR'd their entire youtube-dl fork into the dmca takedown notice's repo, and then when the original fork got deleted in the sweep, it became impossible to delete the pull request. So now if you know any of the commit hashes, you can just sort of grab them from the github dmca repo. Lol.

Oh, and since github doesn't consider that pull requests literally slam one repo's branch history entirely into the git repository of the target, a security flaw, they are like EWONTFIX works as intended etc.

So someone also pull requested the entire commit history of the ryujinx Switch emulator into the yuzu, another Switch emulator, repository. So now the two coexist until the next github garbage collection notices the ryujinx tree is not tagged or attached to any branches and sweeps it away?

    Preach it bro!

I have long held the belief that the MAFIAA is best countered by actually... Well... Doing what they freaking ask. Think about it. How many would've watched and hyped a show like Game of Thrones if it wasn't possible to pirate it? Which lead me to the conclusion that indeed, the piracy movement is mostly a bunch of cheapskates that just want Free Stuff(tm) coupled with a few (tens of thousands of) people that get hurt by really bad laws.

So the MAFIAA is putting down these completely assholery laws because they know it won't really matter because noone cares what laws they put down anyhow, meanwhile people want their Free (and Convenient) Stuff(tm) and as long as they can get what they want noone really cares. Until shit hits the fan, and then it really doesn't matter either way.

So the best way to actually get a change is to let the MAFIAA start using their massive guns, then people would actually start to take notice and realise "Wait, we can use free software, creative commons and open source to get out of this!" and 20 years later, voila, copyright circumvented. Unfortunately, everyone is too busy torrenting the latest hottest on Netflix to actually do what is right, both figuratively and literally speaking. Oh well!

I don't consume Disney/Hollywood/whatever, at all. (I'm even on the "I don't own a TV" league nowadays, albeit a bit involuntary)

Not even pirated. They don't even exist for me.

Yet their angry lawyers keep fucking all over my computers!

I would say "Fuck Netfix" too, but sadly they got into the anime production market too! (case in point: Little Witch Academia)

I don't THINK Netflix funded any part of the production of LWA TV. They sure aren't listed in the credits outside of regional distribution.
They slap the "Netflix Originals" logo onto any content they have exclusive streaming rights to, it doesn't mean they played any part in the program's development.

GiggityHub's answer so far: "Please stop reposting DMCA'd code, otherwise we will have to ban you and we don't really want to do that!"

Well, I let the MS acquisition slide, as it was not a big deal to me. But it's now the time to burn those fuckers.
Time to delete my account then (I have nothing of interest there: a few bugreports and the lone PR I've done in my life, for a program I don't even use nowadays)

Unfortunately the options suck: Gitlab is also USAian, self-hosting involves money nobody wants to spend, EU is MAFIAA's bitch, and China/Russia.... ugh, despite what the keyboard warriors/closet anarchists/sureofnothings of the world suggests, I prefer to fight the MAFIAA in court and lose rather than hosting a single include/import sentence on a CCP-controlled server, where Comrade Pooh can shitlist my code AND fuck up my "social score" (whatever that means) at will.

Nope, Tor is not the answer either!

Another good reason to nuke your GiggityHub account: their latest batch of hipster webshit updates broke the site for anyone not using Chorme/latest Firefux (which means site now renders all broken on Seamonkey and others). They don't care about fighting the Blink/Webkit monoculture anymore, and even if your alternate non-Chromium browser sourcecode is hosted there, they don't give a fuck. Yes, Pale Moon devs are feeling the sand in their privates - last time I bothered checking, they were consider a switch to self-hosted Gitlab.

UPDATE: Come get my fucking ass, MAFIAA~
Not #DeleteGiggityHub just yet (as I've said, my profile is basically a placeholder), instead I'll let you send the lawyers to Soviet Venezuela, maybe that would be my golden chance to leave this shithole: with an extradition order!

Question; Why even involve yourself with github when gitlab or other free repository hosting sites also exist?

Their site, their right to be arseholes. Even when it's not right.

Gitlab is still located on the USofA, so not an option if you want to stay the hell away from the copyright cartel.

People have been talking about Gitea, but that one is Chinese, so you're trading enemies.

"Host yourself" is nice... if you can afford it, and as long as your hosting is not in either America, Europe, or China.

Then, the last option is blockchains peer-to-peer decentralized hosting solutions. Good for distributing code, horrible for everything else (pull requests, bugtracking, interacting with users, which are the core features of GitHub and friends beyond just a git(1) frontend)

So yeah, everything sucks once you analize your options.

Do any source repo services use Mercurial? I hate git.

What's the current state of obscure web browsers? I use Pale Moon and while I adore them and their shenanigans (look up their self-inflicted drama with one of the BSD Unices) I'm curious what else is out there.

Bitbucket. WTF, they killed it almost 5 months ago!?

Ah well, here are some of your options. Didn't knew SourceForge had Mercurial, but then, who uses SF these days? All the kool kids left that dumpster fire when the ads (and continuous ownership changes, each new owner being worse than the prior one) rotted its foundations :/

Seamonkey. Aside of PM, it's the last browser with a SANE, non-braindamaged UI still standing, and it's still straight Gecko under the hood.

There is Waterfox, if you can stand the Asstralis disaster and still want compatibility with XUL addons.
Lynx/Elinks are still kicking alive, it seems, same for Dillo, but forget about the perks of the modern web.

Unfortunately most modern webshit only caters to Chrome and its clones, so half the Internet will look broken on our "obscure" browsers :/
Case in point: GitHub, which despite being the host for many of those obscure browsers sources, don't care at all for anything that isn't Blink or recent Firefox :/
