https://games.slashdot.org/story/18/10/31/0247243/kids-apps-are-flooded-with-ads In other non-news, "apps" for kids are actually not suitable for kids, yet lazy parents keep leaving their kids unsupervised in front of so-called smartdevices. Posted by Kawa And you would need to pay $0.99 to install it :D Has anyone tried playing the latest Google doodle? It's an online multiplayer and actually quite fun. I still have no idea what I'm talking about. |

Posted by KoiMaxx Just played a game. Pretty decent. Didn't seem like there was a lot of potential strategies other than collecting stuff as fast as possible and hoping one of your teammate is not away from keyboard, but you know, it's a Google doodle so it's probably not going to be a super deep strategy game. |

The strategy is to play like an asshole and steal long chains from the opposing team right near the scoring zones. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Screw_Yall |

Oh yes, I did that too. But if that's the only viable strategy (which most will use) then winning or losing is mostly determined by luck. |

Posted by tommanI'd wager that the majority of "kid-friendly" media on the Internet is not, in fact, safe for children. There is a lot of really disturbing stuff out there (hi, YouTube). If I had a kid, I would absolutely not put a shred of trust in The Algorithm™ to not eventually show them Baby's First Horse Porn or Ethnic Cleansing for Kids! starring Elsa and Spider-Man. Nobody has any morals left in this modern hellscape. |

Posted by BMF54123 I mean, a few years back neither the television "kid-friendly" media was safe either. Hell, I used to catch very dirty jokes on animations like Cow & Chicken, Johnny Bravo and even Powerpuff Girls, let alone the Nickelodeon animations. To be fair, I'm aware that much of the Disney movie animations for instance, weren't exactly supposed to be children aimed, despite being advertised like so. And it's true many of the jokes were very subtle and you could easily overlook them, but from there you can see that parents weren't interested in proper parenting more than letting the TV do their job in educating the kids. What's now different from back then is that modern kid-friendly media are garbage and it went from TV to smartdevices. |

Posted by tomman Posted by BMF54123 Yeah, I feel the same (and there's obviously a lot, lot worse on the internet than YT and even that I wouldn't trust)...really bad idea to leave a young kid with all this stuff. Or maybe worse idea of all, give them access to social medias. When you're not a kid anymore (say when high school is over), go ahead and proceed at your own risk, until then, no internet in room/unsupervised, no social medias and/or smart devices. That's the rules my sister and her husband have established for my niece anyway when she gets older (she's only 3 right now). |

Love this week's n-gate Not only it presents Hacker News stories bullshit-free, as an interesting addition, they now measure the level of bloat on each article. Apparently CNBC is at the rock bottom of the Javashit scale, with a page load of almost 15MB across slightly over 300 requests. You've read it right - FIFTEEN MEGABYTES of absolute garbage just to display a "368-word article". Fuck, I could install the final release of Ultimate Doom for DOS and still have space to spare on those 15MB! Plus this automatically makes your piece-of-BS-disguised-as-journalism unreadable to anybody on Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Reminds me of the class of interesting issues I used to get at $FORMER_WORKPLACE_PRODUCT, due to the use of a rather novel approach to historic records tables, when someone decides to be an ass and click twice a button that should be clicked only once. The whole story and design is a pile of WTFs I may confess someday, but at least that is replacing a even bigger pile of WTFs (their solution for keeping previous versions was to clone the database to a entirely new database, because redundancy has to be redundant!) I was almost forced to do the same - what saved me was the fact you can't do that at JPA (in fact, working with dynamic data sources is... well, to this day, I'm not even sure if this is even doable from a standard J2EE app container), so I had to come up with the current mess we have. Still, it works wonders as long as noone clicks those buttons that shall be clicked once more than once. Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |
