    Damn kids!

Also, the Saints Row scene isn't really a Transformers parody, it just uses an awesome song.

Your next Evangelion is going to be FOSS powered - Khara is switching to Blender for future projects:
    https://entertainment.slashdot.org/story/19/08/16/2113234/anime-studio-khara-is-planning-to-use-open-source-blender-software
    https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2019-08-18/khara-to-completely-switch-to-blender-open-source-3d-software-after-evangelion-3.0-1.0/.150173

Apparently even all the Evangelion cash cow funds are not enough to cover the new 3DS Max licensing subscription fees, now that Autodesk is on the "on the cloud" train of greed that Adobe started. Plus, looks like Blender has now upped their game on the 2D animation department, and looks like Khara thinks it's Good Enough to trust their future to it.

(They still seem have a plan C for when Blender is not enough, and that's... Unity?! Yes, Unity, the game engine - you can now make cartoons with it too)

So my internet is out, for a few days(we apparently actually broke ATT's database). On the upside, the time I'm not spending dicking about online I can spend produotively!
    ...
Or I can watch animes I downloaded and never got around to instead.

    Today: "Gamers!".

I expected a bunch of jokes about retro PS2 games. Instead I get a romantic comedy where everyone canonically has no idea how relationships work. Seriously, an entire episode was dedicated to all the characters trying to sort out the potential ramifications of a multidimensional love polygon that only exists in their mind. It was funnier than it had a right to be.

So far, they seem fond of talking. I might be in for a long and boring ride.

I saw part of it roughly a century ago, but all I remember about it is "space elves in spandex".

Most of a month later, I'm actually settling in and WATCHING the show instead of declaring my intent to do so and then watching just the first episode.
Wordswordswordswordswords sums things up nicely so far. But not in a boring way. I'm only a few episodes in and our hero, Jinto, is very much just a fish out of water at this point so they've basically spent three episodes explaining the Abh(and chasing down a purse-snatcher, and doing establishing shots of a space fleet).

The most notable thing, really, is that the animation is a lot less dynamic than I remember. The show is very fond of high-framerate pans or zooms over large static images to create an illusion of high-framerate animation. (Don't get me wrong, this is vastly preferable to stationary shots of frame-size static images)
Combined with a tendency to overlay two images on top of each other or deploying nineties computer image manipulation instead of properly animating a transition, it gives the show a unique look. Not a particularly dynamic look, but one that works well most of the time. And the cheapness of the cinematography does not extend to the actual illustration quality. Characters are well-animated, and backgrounds are consistently well-drawn.

    ...

Also, the space elf uniforms are not nearly as flattering as I remember. I will blame that on an artifact of the era's viewing technology called "I was a teenager".

Having now finished Crest of the Stars, I actually like it quite a bit. Later episodes mostly eschew the "long pan over a static image" in favor of something actually animated.

What I really enjoy, though, is small details included in the setting. Things like the laser pistols having a low-power wide-angle setting so they can be used as flashlights.
Or when Lafiel tells Jinto that you can't actually dodge a laser in space because by the time you see it firing, you're hit.
It feels grounded in a way most sci-fi doesn't.

Do I like it enough to immediately leap into Banner of the Stars? No, but mostly that's just because I've got a diffrent franchise gnawing at my attention right now. Not one suited for this thread, though.

I remember long pans from Master Keaton, and especially Figure 17 with its gorgeous watercolor panoramas of Hokkaido. People might not remember it if all they were watching back then was action series like Dragonball... A modern example is Kill la Kill.

The train of suck what we call "year 2020" has no brakes, and no rails either:

Sega and Netflix have announced a new animated Sonic series:
    https://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?threads/sonic-netflix-series.39810/
    https://gbatemp.net/threads/netflix-announces-new-sonic-animated-series.578684/
(Netflix tweet was promptly deleted, but the cat is now out of the bag)

I... have strong opinions against this newest project:

    - 3DCG, because the Western animation industry is still hellbent on murdering, killing and burying 2D animation, then setting the tombstone on fire. Seriously, if I wanted to watch Sonic in 3D, I would play Generations instead.
    - The series will be directed/created/composed/whatever by Man of Action... the same dude that came up with Ben 10 (among another pile of forgettable animations). I still have a special hate for the Ben 10 franchise, because that one alone triggered one of the longest dork ages on Cartoon Network (seriously: I was there for when the first episode premiered on Latam, and the young me just said "uh-oh... CHANGE IT!")
    - Sega's track on recent Sonic animations has been not great: Sonic X was OK at best (it didn't managed to hook me up; having 4Kids added to the mix for American distribution didn't helped matters at all), while Sonic Boom was a snoozefest (I managed to watch a couple episodes and quickly dismissed it). I get it, I'm clearly not the target audience, Sega's animation arm only wants to sell toys and games to little kids nowadays, but man... stop pissing on my childhood!
    - Netflix, because we have to get little kids hooked onto walled gardens, forced binge watching, and heavy DRM as young as possible! Well, at least it will get a (hopefully decent) LA Spanish dub on release day, as it is the standard for them.

So yeah, not for me, sorry.

This is the second most disgusting animation-related news I read this week: by far the COVIDiots Award of the Week goes to Crunchyroll, which managed to get absorbed into the $ON¥ empire of evil! This is real bad for oh so many reasons:

    - Suddenly there is a monopoly in the building for anime distribution, at least in the Americas - remember that $ON¥ tentacles had already swallowed Funimation (which from what I've heard, only THIS YEAR they're actually slowly expanding into Latin America... one country at a time!). Now they control two of the largest anime streaming services worldwide - their competition now is basically Netflix only!

    - The Animax fiasco is a wound that never healed for us Latam fans. A textbook example on how NOT to run a niche TV channel, and how to poison the local dub market with piss-poor quick jobs because "quality costs money". Now this move is akin to pouring more salt at that bloody open wound. I haven't used CR in years (for obvious reasons) so I can't vouch for their current sub/dub quality, but expect a sharp quality drop on those. Oh, and actual heavy DRM because it's $ON¥, of course!

    - Also expect more censorship to come, if the California SJW-run SIE division (the PlayStation guys) is a sign of how things could quickly turn to bad. Remember, these are the guys that decide how much clothing your DoA girls and patissiere nekos have to wear in order to sell their games in frickin' Japan! (and in a extreme twist of irony, if you want your uncensored versions, you have now to turn out to the kid-friendly Switch)

    - Seriously people, after CD rootkits, TV dork ages, constant data leaks, censorship and other anti-consumer moves, would you still keep giving your money to $ON¥!? Well, I guess that if you already own a PlayStation, all bets are off :/

Yes, I'm really pissed off. I have my own axe to grind against this megacorp, but I'm not the only one.
    Remember:
    $ON¥ = EVIL!

As someone pretty fond of the Studio Ghibli classic Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, there was something about the lore that I always felt deserved some further exploration -- the God Warriors that engulfed the world in fire in seven days. I just found out now they actually did it back in 2012.

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

And somehow, it has been an entire fucking year since Railgun season 3 started, and I'm only just now getting to it.

Six episodes in, and the antagonists have made a series of bad decisions in close proximity. They keep doing things to make our heroes be personally invested in KICKING THEIR ASS. Which is a really bad decision when one of them is basically Magneto and Thor combined into a schoolgirl.

(I've been reading the comics, so I have in fact seen this arc play out, but that was quite a while ago and the details are fuzzy. At this point, I honestly don't recall what the plan was, but I am absolutely certain that it did NOT involve pissing off a level 5 with a penchant for converting pocket change into artillery shells.)

And moving onto the new... it's Isekai O'Clock, as episode one of "I'm a Spider, So What?" airs.
It is the best isekai show, by virtue of being an adaptation of "I'm a Spider, So What?".

The premise is that a fight between the hero and demon lord in some bullshit fantasy realm went very wrong. The magical backlash spilled out into another world, and destroyed an ordinary classroom in an ordinary island nation.
And our heroine, having been in that classroom, has reincarnated in that fantasy world as an overpowered hero with every advantage possib- naw, I'm just fuckin' with ya. She reincarnated as a giant spider in a cave. Fortunately, she takes this in stride. She's not very social to start with, and she figures if she can just set up a nice web somewhere and live a lazy and indolent life, she'll take it.Food will get caught in her web, she will eat the food, and life will be simple, peaceful, and uneventful.

Spoilers: the world will not let her live a lazy and indolent life. She is gonna get mad OP and cause all KINDS of trouble.
