    I've been playing Pokken Tournament.
It is a more direct version of the typical pokemon cockfighting shtick, in that you are directly controlling your trained fighting creatures in a versus fighter not dissimilar to Tekken.

I have punched so many 'mons into submission. My cockfighter is the best cockfighter.

I played obra dinn today. I like it, nice retro style graphics, intriguing gameplay. You can really only play thru it once, but its fun

I started playing Aragami. It's a really fun third-person stealth game. I was a little confused at how a shadow-based teleportation had replaced jumping altogether, but I realised that there was a lot of strategy involved. I first played it multi-player online and found the next day that playing single-player, I found it flawed due to there being no changes whatsoever, apart from the AI. Regardless, I use both modes to gain advantage in one another since there is a point system in which you can gain different abilities.

The only thing I actually disliked about the game was the shitty use of Japanese. They literally mumble the majority of the way through with the occasional distinguishable word. So, you basically have to read the English subtitles or GTFO.

Might get some hate for it, but I played the Chrono Trigger romhack "Flames of Eternity". Considering it's still in an unfinished state, the game is actually quite enjoyable, and is a tad difficult that is very welcoming. I actually liked it. I'm currently roaming around 2305 kicking around in the colosseum to get Crono's Rainbow Sword and getting some levels too.

And I'm playing Blue Reflection, because trash RPG aimed at teenage girls has a neat visual style.

    And other reviewers...

    Conclusion:
Blue Reflection has a lot of interesting ideas, from its plot to the core gameplay, so it’s unfortunate that these ideas are left to fester in a pool of mediocrity and drowned in an adventure that feels boring and stale before it’s even really begun. The opening scenes show a lot of promise, but none of it is built upon as the game develops. Blue Reflection feels like a tutorial for JRPG beginners - one that even the most inexperienced player would get bored with.

They're not judging me, they're judging the game. I DID call it a "trash RPG".

But I like some of the characters, so it is okay.

That said, I would be kinder to it than that review is. On the other hand, I've seen some positively glowing reviews that make me wonder what they were actually playing.
    ...
Honestly, I may rescind the "trash RPG" label. I've found it a much more pleasant experience than I expected.

I might type up a proper review later.

So easy you would get bored?

    Cute anime girls?

... sounds like my kind of game. I would play it. Too bad about the "PS4 exclusive" part :/

Also on Steam, actually. Completely uncut... and requiring way more power than it ought. (It staggers a bit on a PS4, despite looking like no trouble)

The expansion content is almost all costumes that make no sense.
But yeah, there's no excuse for it to have the hardware requirements it does, and I'm pretty sure they're actually needed.

That's what the thread's for, bring it on!

    ----

I finally finished the the Bloodstained Backer Beta today. Compared to the previous Igavanias I've played (specifically the GBA games), it seems pretty much on-par with Aria... which is to say, it's not too difficult, as long as you're OK with dodging enemies and running past them occasionally, especially while you're lower-level. That was up until I met the second boss. Where the first boss was mostly spectacle, the second boss actually required me to notice attack patterns and dodge to a safe place well in advance of the attack going off... preferably a safe place within melee striking distance. I probably handicapped myself a bit by picking the slowest, heaviest weapon I had, but I didn't have the patience to chip away at a boss with no visible HP bar

Anyway, I got to that second boss a week ago, and tried for maybe half an hour to beat it up, with no observable progress. I tried again today, took a bit more care and discovered the boss has a second form (because of course it does). Cheered by my progress, I kept trying and eventually I beat him, the screen faded to white, and apparently I beat the demo in an hour and fifty minutes. I'm really eager to see the full game now, though. Maybe it's finally time to try out SotN in earnest?

Also, a fun trick for doing damage with that slow, over-the-head swing: run toward the target, hit the attack button, *then* jump if necessary, and hopefully you'll reach the target before the animation ends, and deal your damage. Then immediately attack again, and now the target's within range you'll do damage at the *start* of the animation. Once you get the timing down right, and as long as you're in an area of the castle where enemies die in two hits, you can still get around pretty quickly even with a slow weapon. It certainly beats the heck out of dancing around every bone-throwing skeleton... I mean, uh, Morte Bone.

The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

It is the intent. The game's gradually grown on me to the point where I think it is worth some actual attention instead of just naming it as a way to question my own judgement/shame myself. It has gone from being a trash game with a nice visual style to something I have no regrets about and am glad I played.

I finally finished the the Bloodstained Backer Beta today.

    Hooray!

Maybe it's finally time to try out SotN in earnest?

It is always time to try out Symphony in earnest.

The original US translation and dub gets a lot of flak, but it is actually fairly competent and has a charm about it. Everything is over-acted and melodramatic, but it is a friggin' game about whipping and/or stabbing Dracula to death. I would EXPECT it to be hammed up so much that a vegetarian can't play it.
The biggest flaw in the original translation* is that Richter's lines were recorded in a bathroom, if the reverb is anything to go by.

The new and improved translation isn't improved or new. It takes the original PS1 translation, rewords every sentence to be different, many lines to readeth lyke olde-timey wordes, and replaces the hammy hammy voice acting with a lifeless script reading that exhibits no emotion or personality.

This is easy enough to tell in the first five minutes. The original JP script has a "so anime it hurts" speech about the power of love and humanity's justice. The original english translation goes completely off the rails here and COMPLETELY rewrites the exchange, and the "retranslation" just rewords that exchange.

There IS actually a fan translation that I've been meaning to run through.

*Excepting the item list. Virtually every item in the original english version carries a new name made from whole cloth, many adding in references that weren't present originally, often randomly. Many of these names are now canon and carry forward to ALL english Castlevania releases. But no one cares about that, people just complain that men are miserable piles of SECRETS.

If you want the english retranslation, get Symphony of the Night on the PS4 (it's a port of the PSP port). If you want the english translation then get the game on Xbox360, PS3 or PS1.

Sometimes I feel like the only person who liked Circle of the Moon more than Symphony of the Night. Sure, the game was all but unplayable on a launch GBA (though perfectly fine on a GBASP, GB Player, DS, Emulators™, and more), sure the DSS system is totally broken, sure item drops are way too sparse... but I just love how tightly it controls, the layout of the castle, and the overall progression. The soundtrack, also, was top-notch.

Congratulations. Now combine that with backdash-cancel and you can do *three* hits really fast.

I BEAT Circle on a plain ol' GBA.

I found it to be nice outside of boss battles, which were punishingly drawn out due to how little damage I dealt and how much damage they dealt.

The annoying part about CotM is that they give you the running boots right at the very beginning, after which you never want to not run again. Then you’re double-tapping left and right for the whole game when they could’ve had you just run by default.

Is that just hitting backdash while the attack animation plays?

Sometimes I feel like the only person who liked Circle of the Moon more than Symphony of the Night.

That's the one with the weird playing-card-based magic system, right? I don't have a lot of strong memories of it, aside from that part where two paths open up and one is much, much higher-level than the other, and the first "you must have item X to progress" lock is quite a ways in. Guess which one I picked and tried to get through, suddenly surprised at the intense difficulty spike?

I think Harmony was my favourite so far; it was definitely the easiest of the three, and weirdly garish (like the original NES games, in some ways), but even if the monsters weren't lethal, it was harder to get through a room unscathed. The level-designers seemed to have a knack for putting monsters in hard-to-reach places, or choosing monsters whose movement was a good match for the terrain, or deploying groups of monsters whose strengths made up for each other's weaknesses.

The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

I tend to do jump cancels, though maybe that's only in the 3rd GBA game and later games. Specifically landing from a jump cancels the attack animation allowing for a quick hit each short jump you perform so your attack speed can be quite high and it's easy to perform the trick.

This is what is stopping me from playing beyond the first boss. Is there a mod/hack for this?
