I'll probably never own any hardware that Horizon: Zero Dawn will run on, but I've been watching a YouTube Let's Play, and it looks pretty great. Portraying current-day or near-future technology as the relics of a lost civilisation is absolutely my jam, and H:ZD is so much better at it than I could ever be, it's kind of frustrating.

Oh goody, Stadia, but for PS4 games.

I've done it! Finally! I've upgraded the CPU, Motherboard and RAM! Almost wrecked the CPU/Motherboard in the process lmfao. When we first installed the Noctua Heatsink we had it oriented the wrong way and the thermal paste we were using was like glue. When we finally got the heatsink off to re-orient it we ended up yanking the CPU out of the socket too (still stuck to the heatsink) even though the Restraint Bar was locked in place... thankfully the CPU survived unscathed.

Then we realized the plastic doohickeys that the Heatsink Fans press against can simply be pulled off and moved to the other side of the heatsink and we never had to remove the heatsink in the first place >.>

Also I used waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much Thermal Paste, practically all 3.5g of Arctic Silver Ceramic 2 paste (non-conductive) >.>" so we'll see how that goes lol (usually my dad applies the stuff).

I also forgot that the new motherboard doesn't have a PS/2 port for Keyboard... so I need to get an adapter. Also this motherboard has no XMP setting, but it does let you view the XMP profile values so I had to manually configure the RAM.

edit: Earthworm Jim: Windows 95 Special Edition and Shantae: Pirate's Curse both suffered horrendous frame pacing issues with my old hardware, however the problem is fully resolved for Shantae and the situation is significantly improved for Earthwom Jim with the new hardware, so... I guess my old hardware must have had a really out of whack timing system?

XMP is intel's trademark, it'll be a rare thing on AMD motherboards. look for DOCP. Also update the bios, nab the ryzen master software, and hopefully enjoy the three months of xbox game pass(beta)

A grain of rice is all you need. You probably used 10x the recommended amount. If you want, you can research where the cores are under the heatspreader and put little dots there, but usually a tiny blob in the center is enough.

Your heat sink probably smashed it thin enough to work fine, but it might have caused a mess you’ll have to deal with if you change it out. Don’t worry about redoing it right now.

If you had futzed with the HPET configuration before, it will have been reset by the motherboard change. Don’t mess with it. You’ve got a constant-rate TSC now, too.

do people not know what a head spreader does? Too much really isn't an issue with thermal paste, provided it doesn't overflow out the sides.

Gets in the way of cooling/protects the die from crushing.

Heat spreader is a pretty name, but they're actually armor.

A heat spreader is the thing that gets in the way of everything you want to do, at least the Noctua NH D14 is.

Thanks for the reminder. I got a free copy of The Outer Worlds and 3 month Xbox Game Pass (which I haven't activated yet), and yes in hindsight I realize I coulda played the game via the Xbox Game Pass >.>" and gotten Borderlands 3 for free instead but I'm not too worried about it.

Played some Minecraft Bedrock Edition, care of a fork of mcpelauncher, and the latest version from Google Play for x86. Works great.

Also played Dead Space. Was making it pretty far, destroyed gravity tethers harnessing an asteroid, planted a beacon on it, released it into space, killed the ambush that came after me, and proceeded back to the nearby elevator. Instead of getting to activate the elevator, I fricking FELL THROUGH THE DAMN FLOOR INTO SPACE. Reloaded my last save, it was well before doing any of the above, so I gave up for now.

Yep, that's one of the reasons I'm fine with my decision to not use the coupon right away.

About two weeks ago, I published an interactive fiction short story I wrote, and about one week ago I made a thread on the IF Community Forum about one of the design challenges I'd faced. I got a lot of helpful replies, recommending other games to learn from, and I've started slowly playing through them.

Abbess Otilia's Life and Death is pretty straight-forward as Twine games go - you get to pick how Otilia responds to various challenges and events in her abbey, and at the end you get to see what her legacy was (influenced by your choices). What really makes this, though, is the presentation as a medieval manuscript, in black-letter type, with illustrations and notes in the margins from long-dead scholars, and just a bit of Church Latin sprinkled here and there for flavour. I wouldn't have imagined myself spending an hour or two reading about the life of a medieval nun, let alone a fictional one, but this sucked me in.

Currently I'm rambling through Lancelot (playable on the Internet Archive), a game from 1988, so it's a lot more primitive than modern IF - most rooms only have a line or two of descriptive text and no actual objects. It's of the era where navigation was a challenge to be overcome, instead of an obstacle to be avoided, so I've had a lot of fun exploring all the connections between rooms and mapping them out (thanks, Kawa!). I'm still not entirely sure what the game is yet; where some games' tutorial is "how to attack and dodge" or "jumping breaks blocks", this game's tutorial is "how to be chivalrous", which doesn't particularly help me with a pressure-plate-and-dart-trap.

The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

Backup your Save Files if you play Monster Hunter: World. Capcom weirdly removed the functionality that converts old Save File formats to the newest format... resulting in the game deciding old Save Files are corrupt and suggesting you overwrite them with a brand new file (losing all your progress if you agree to it). Worse still, if you have Cloud Saving enabled the game will upload and overwrite your Cloud Save when you quit the game (better use Task Manager or the Reset button on the computer to force the game shut without it erasing your Cloud Save with a brand new Save File.

Finally got a decent game for X-mas. Now playing through Fire Emblem: Three Houses on the Switch and having an absolute blast. Just finished the mission where the Death Knight makes his second appearance, but I totally butchered the pacing in that mission not to mention I missed out on valuable training lessons (because noone says wait 'til the end of the month... Bah, humbug!), so I'm probably redoing it tonight.

This game is ridiculously addictive, even for a FE title. :)

I had to start Dead Space over again, as a result of destroying my Linux install in a fit of anger to replace it with an existing Windows install from a slower drive. I later moved Windows back to the other drive, and reinstalled Arch from scratch.

I did some things differently this time, though:

    1) Instead of using refind, I used grub, set to remember the last boot option. Works a lot better with multiple installed kernels.
    2) Instead of using full disk encryption, minus the boot volume, containing LVM2, containing swap/root/home partitions, I used raw swap and root partitions, free and clear.
    3) Instead of using ext4 for everything, I used btrfs with zstd compression enabled.

I pulled a stupid too, I bothered to shrink the partitions from the old system enough to back them up on a tiny 256GB drive, but I didn't bother backing them up. So I lost my Dead Space saves.

Guess what I found from my time in Windows? That's right, Direct3D 9 has degraded so badly in Windows 10 as to be unusable for Dead Space. The frame rate severely tanks, and starts to trigger my monitor's FreeSync, which strobes horribly, causing the monitor to get stuck strobing its backlight for at least several minutes afterward, even when switched away from the game. Yuck!

Meanwhile, thanks to DXVK, and its newly merged in D9VK, Dead Space runs at least 60fps at 3840x2160 on an RX 480. If only DXVK could be used as easily in Windows.

I can’t remember what I was trying to run, but I know it worked fine for me when I tried that. You just put the .dll files into the .exe directory and the loader picks them up.

In case anyone beats me to it: please try running Dead Space on Windows 10 with the DXVK runtime extracted to its install folder alongside the game binaries. Naturally, you’ll need a video card with Vulcan support.

Played a bit of LttP Randomizer. It's pretty interesting (until you have everything except the bow and you have to search literally every possible location for it because you've been dealt an unlucky random seed). I prefer the vanilla game but it's definitely a neat concept.

Before there was Duke Nukem there was Dynamite Duke. There was a MD port which was pretty competent.
