Posted by creaothceann That was quite surprising when I first saw it. Played it a bit and while the jump physics/controls are not the best it's still extremely impressive on a technical level, even more impressive considering it's a homebrew game since the SNES has never been known afaik, for its strong homebrew library. |

Has science gone too far? Is this article real or fake?Posted by https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/12/24/colleges-are-turning-students-phones-into-surveillance-machines-tracking-locations-hundreds-thousands/ I will give it to them, it's rare that I have genuinely felt a sense of nausea at reading something on the Internet. Well done, guys. I wonder how long until it becomes compulsory? It's sickening on several levels. Of course there is the visceral part, but when you think about it, what does it really entail? “These administrators have made a justification for surveilling a student population because it serves their interests, in terms of the scholarships that come out of their budget, the reputation of their programs, the statistics for the school,” said Kyle M. L. Jones, an Indiana University assistant professor who researches student privacy. They're a bloody college. How do they not already have enough "school-performance data"? Since when were grades not sufficient information to go on? It is one of those things you never speak about. There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. You believed that you had actually held it in your hands. It was a photograph something like this. |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQsR9kFC09g So this guy captured himself playing Synth Rider. Which is a synthwave pseudo-80s-styled VR music game. ... And he decided to go all-out and dress the part of an 80s rocker, and do some 80s-style music video editing of himself lip-syncing along and playing air guitar. I can't decide if it is genius or insanity, but I respect the effort made. The video is presented as a work of art. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

I think there's a far simpler explanation, Occam's razor and all.An ambitious program of cost-cutting, outsourcing, and digitalization had already begun. What's the expression in English? Wise for a penny, stupid for a pound? Basically, the issue is that outsourcing is a chimera. You hire "engineers," which aren't actually engineers but do have the requisite degrees for the bean-counters. They then hazard that even if they're less competent, since they're much cheaper, it will work out. On paper, it seems reasonable: 100 "engineers" each working at 0.1x the wage and being 70% less competent should be a net gain if they replace 20 engineers demanding six figures and health insurance. This strategy yields short-term returns, then collapses horribly after a few years. The 'why' is left as an exercise for the reader. (A similar pattern may be observed with regime shifts in some countries, for just the same reason) There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. You believed that you had actually held it in your hands. It was a photograph something like this. |

The Intel i7 920 CPU can outperform a Ryzen 3700X when playing a N64 song via the 64th Note plugin with the "Use Recompiler CPU" option turned off (so it uses the Interpreter CPU instead). With the Ryzen 3700X it pegs a single core to 100% utilization and suffers nasty audio stalls and crackle while I believe the i7 920 hovered around 60-80% utilization for most songs (music from some games did max it out though). Using the recompiler results in CPU usage dropping to 2~% on the Ryzen. Don't even bother to disable the recompiler options, that's a horrible idea. It's also not a fair benchmark, as it uses some really poorly optimized C code for everything. If you want to make it worse, make the RSP interpreter mode as well, that has at least a 4x slowdown effect compared to the recompiler. For instance, Echo Marches from Blast Corps, using foo_input_usf, with HLE audio and resampling to 44100Hz, with 3 decoding passes: Total length: 24:06.069 Opening time: 0:00.176 Decoding time: 0:22.622 63.427x realtime That works out to about 1.58% of a single core, or 0.0988 % of the total CPU if you're using Windows or a similar task manager. That's a Ryzen 7 2700. |

The only way the 920 could outperform the 3700x is if the code was targeted to that architecture or it’s doing cpu detection and using a fast path. There’s that cpuid thing with old games only checking the low nibble of the processor generation, too. |

It's a really crappy interpreter, emulating a 90MHz RISC processor. The other interpreter case, which compounds the slowness, is emulating a 60MHz RISC processor with vector math instructions, using conventional floating point math in C instead. But yeah, I doubt that 920 is actually outperforming the 3700X. It's probably an unfair workload. Probably not a good comparison, since these jokers already knock off any comparison >8 threads as "extra" information and not part of the base comparison. https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-920-vs-AMD-Ryzen-7-3700X/1981vs4043 This says the 3700X should be 103% better at single core tasks. |
