v71 doesn't utilize my custom userChrome.css and userContent.css files correctly. Seemingly the only thing that is working in the files is the addition of a new toolbar below the Bookmarks... but the Tab Bar isn't moved to there and various stylistic changes to the UI aren't being applied. toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets is set to True in the degraded about:config UI (it's been converted to HTML, and stripped of a lot of functionality for no reason). On the plus side, though, from the release notes: "Native MP3 decoding on Windows, Linux, and macOS"! Although it's not obvious to me whether "native" in this situation means "native to the OS, rather than custom built-in to Firefox" or "native to Firefox, rather than depending on the OS". So, it seems Mozilla has been very busy lately making the transition from "developer of web browsers and related Internet applications" to "Silly Valley startup" (they're not yet at the "unicorn" stage): they've pulled a Microsoft and sacked some of their QA/engineering staff, because they must figure out how to be "on the road to profitability". The Highly Paid Art School Dropout UXtards™ and marketdroids are still safe, free to keep fucking over their ever shrinking userbase. They also booted Thunderbird to a newly founded subsidiary (yes, Mozilla now has those, aside of Pocket), "MZLA Technologies Corporation". I guess they make life easier for the mothership to keep ignoring decade-old bugreports on a formerly great product that it's now languishing like that old beaten up junker rusting under the arid desert sun. UPDATE: "monetize Thunderbird"... wait, what?! The only monetizable Thunderbirds I want are the Ford ones, thanks. But everything is great on the corporation that encourages people to consider ethical concerns before In more positive news from Team Seamonkey, the release train gears just got a new coating of grease and a bunch of fixes: the first beta release for SM2.53.1 (yes, the next major release is already at a point release because reasons) is now available for your testing pleasure. BACKUP YOUR PROFILE! Yes, they're being serious this time: 2.53 brings some important changes that will migrate/irreversibly change some stuff under your profile, making downgrades impossible unless you've got backups. There is still hope... Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

They also booted Thunderbird to a newly founded subsidiary (yes, Mozilla now has those, aside of Pocket), "MZLA Technologies Corporation". For those keeping track at home, this is the second time this has happened; originally Thunderbird development happened inside the Mozilla Corporation like Firefox, but MoCo's attention and resources went mostly to Firefox and Thunderbird didn't get the attention it needed. In 2007, the Mozilla Foundation started a new company named Mozilla Messaging to manage Thunderbird, but there wasn't enough revenue to sustain it, so in 2011 the company was folded back into the Mozilla Labs group of MoCo, and Mozilla Labs was shut down in 2014. According to the blog-post, Thunderbird now has decent revenue just from volunteer donations, which is... surprising. On the other hand, it's the only mail client I've found on Linux that displays HTML messages properly and lets me compose replies, so I guess a lot of people probably find it valuable. I wonder if they've found a company somewhere with a vested interest in the continued existence of third-party email tools. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI. |

In fairness, ejecting it from MoCo proper seemed to be mostly be so that Firefox developers no longer had to care that their changes to Gecko might break Thunderbird. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

This happened a couple weeks ago or so: https://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/seamonkey2.53.1/ (but thanks to my complete lack of DSL access for the obvious reasons, it means I had to ration hard my 3G data just to update today...) UPGRADE IT NAO! It now identifies itself as Firefox 60, which means they've beat up enough the later Gecko versions to bring back some XUL sanity. No breakages to report so far. We finally got localized 64-bit for all supported platforms (including Win64), so yay~! (You're advised to uninstall obsolete langpacks before upgrading, though I didn't found problems and I was just able to remove the obsolete es-AR langpack after upgrading since it got disabled anyway, without falling back to gross English) ...if only some of my banks would stop with the insecurity theater madness, because they start with another round of "I don't know you, go away or I'll call the thugs!" BS the rare times I update my goddamned browsers! Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Seafox addon (highly reocmmended to restore some FF3.x sanity) breaks with SM2.53. Its author no longer gives a fuck since he gave up with the Internet in general sometime ago, but luckily someone else has a fix: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=14855224#p14855224 Unpack, edit that CSS file, repack, reinstall, done. I enjoy each tab having its close button, and the HTTPS padlock being in my address bar, thankyouverymuch~ ---- My theme of choice, GNOMERunner, breaks media player controls. I saw this about 3 years ago while I was using the Adrian Kalla's builds, but eventually went away after upstream re-railed the release train. Unfortunately it's now broken again, and even worse, GNOMERunner development stopped sometime around 2018. The Seamonkey error console tells nothing useful, and while switching to the default theme restores proper media playback controls, it feels non-native as fuck (hello, fatass tabs and alien icons not supplied by my GTK icon theme of choice!) *sigh~* Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Workaround for media playback UI and GNOMERunner: - Get the addon XPI (or clone the repo and build it yourself, THEN unpack that one), unpack it - Get a copy of SM 2.53.x omni.ja, unpack that too (use unzip on a console, no fancy GUI tool will open it!) - On the unpacked addon root, delete the contents of /global/media/ - Replace that with omni.ja's /chrome/toolkit/skin/classic/global/media/ - Repack XPI, then reinstall it The UI is still alien, but so it was GNOMERunner's media UI, which also doubles as a reminder that audio and video stuff don't belong to web browsers, but to actual media player applications! But eh, at least it will prevent the broken addon from polluting webpages with random GTK widgets scattered all around pages. pdf.js is borked. Viewer will open, but will stall forever. Someone is maintaining a SM-compatible fork, but it has the same problems. It won't fix the render PDFs in email issue (but I've never had a need to do so...), but at least documents will render properly this time on the browser. If you hate the new Address Bar in Firefox 75 you can disable these preferences in about:config: browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus browser.urlbar.update1 browser.urlbar.update1.interventions browser.urlbar.update1.searchTips looks like they're going to remove our ability to disable the new design pretty soon so a Chrome.css will be the only way in the future (if at all): https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1627969 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1627988 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1627989 AMD Ryzen 3700X | MSI Gamer Geforce 1070Ti 8GB | 16GB 3600MHz DDR4 RAM | ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero (WiFi) Motherboard | Windows 10 x64 |

Firefox 77 makes the new Mega Address Bar compulsory, and it brings with it an annoying enlargement of the Address Bar whenever it is in focus. I've been slowly building up a collection of tweaks I enjoy using and started sharing them recently on Mozzilazine here http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=3058484&p=14854838#p14854838 (includes how to disable the enlarging of the Address Bar). Be aware that MozillaZine are due for closure "soon", more fallout of Mozilla's neverending quest for irrelevance (and MozillaZine's owner unwillingness to continue with keeping the lights on - why not transfer the site to someone else that cares?). This episode of "The Death Of Mozilla" is brought to you by NAND Gates, Inc. - because we can't both be right™:Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products Leaving the anti-Silly Valley snark aside, let's understand what the hell is happening this time with Mozilla: Google still gives (some) money to them, yet they've decided to sack a sizeable chunk of their Software Engineering department (AGAIN!), y'know, the folks that write the code that goes in the goddamned web browser noone wants to use anymore. This apparently hit hard the people at Servo (the new fancy Rust-based engine bits) and MDN (the developer docs anyone that ever poked its extremities into HTML/JS/CSS ever had to read to figure out what's unsupported on this week Firefox release. Oh, and they made the Developer Tools we can't live without!). Of course they blame the China Plague™ because Mozilla is not profitable or whatever, and they want to "pivot" into a services corporation (read: more webshit -some for cellphones- neither you nor anyone else you know are going to use) so they came with a pile of bullshit buzzword bingo straight from San Francisco. Now there are a bunch of very clever browser developer guys out there looking for a new job in the middle of the tl;dr: Thanks Mozilla for strenghtening the Webkit/Blink monoculture! The problem: "We're built over ancient foundations that are already crumbling up, therefore we need to start over" The "solution": tear down the supermarket and replace it with a coffee cart, because the supermarket sold unhealthy foods (plus non-edible stuff like "bleach" and "baby diapers") and people need nothing aside of coffee, amirite? Let me get this clear: we weren't asking to keep XUL forever - if it was FUBAR, it was time to try something new, more modern, while managing to not break user expectations of a product that was already great but still had plenty of room for massive improvement. Instead... we got none of that. We lost way more that we gained: sure, we now have a faster engine... and a severely crippled UI and extensions. And the "faster" claims are still dubious, from what I've read so far. (Gotta love their "we have the numbers: you, the power user don't matter anymore so go away" BS that Mozillas still insist into shoving in our faces to justify their constant mistakes) Mozilla is gone: all we got left is another empty shell Silly Valley "services" corporation that only cares about numbers on a spreadsheet, since there is little else they can do after their endless stream of very embarrassing, shortsighted product decisions. Oh, and if you use Firefox on cellphones (unfortunately that's me because life and tech hates me), I've heard that their latest major update (v79) completely changed things, AGAIN. They've changed the UI AGAIN because the art school dropouts are still on the payroll. And it seems they severely crippled extensions, ONCE AGAIN (not that I care as I don't do addons on mobile). And it seems to have lost one or two features along the way because Mozilla hates having users. I guess I'll stay on v68 until this phone breaks, but then I barely use my phone anyway. The clock is running out for Seamonkey, I'm afraid (2.53.3 got released a few weeks ago and 2.53.4 is already on beta, but the future is still very uncertain) Nope, Pale Moon is still on my shitlist and will be there for a long, LONG time to come...
