At this point, I think it is safe to say that civilization was a mistake.

Thirty years later, Genesis still does what Nintendon't.

In this case, it is "actually putting out enough of your silly emulator boxes in nostalgic cases that people will see them on store shelves". I literally never saw an NES Classic or SNES Classic in the wild. I saw a full shelf-load of Genesis Minis the other day. So I got one, because it is cute.

I rather like the attention to detail on the console design. They molded in the headphone port, and there's even a little flat circle on the back where the real Genesis had a screw hole to lock your Power Base Converter in place and a plastic dome on the bottom where the real Genesis had one. The cartridge door opens, the expansion connector cover comes off, the non-functional volume slider moves. The volume slider is even constructed so that there's a similar resistance to what the real Genesis volume control feels like(I actually thought it would work before I turned the thing on). Sega's always been proud of their history, and it shows.

The attention to detail actually makes one inaccuracy somewhat more glaring. The reset button is recessed rather deeply, and it is annoying mostly because of the attention to detail present in every other facet.

    ...

I guess there's some games too. It is a collection of Genesis ROM images and an emulator. What can I say?

I wouldn't say the library is the forty best games for the Genesis, or even the forty best-known. What it IS, though, is a great historical sampling. You could do far worse if you wanted to create a set of games to show how the Genesis' marketing and software evolved over time, though the lack of a single sports title is notable from this perspective.

The menu lets you sort games alphabetically, by genre, or by release date. That's cool to me, particularly in keeping with the sort of historical presentation. No manual scans are present, though, which is a bummer. Interestingly, changing the menu language to japanese doesn't change the game list to the japanese game list, but it DOES change the release date of the games to match the new region, and swaps the ROM images and box art out for region-appropriate ones. This is most obvious if you set the menu to japanese and go looking for Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, which is replaced with an unmodified Puyo Puyo. Again, it is a nice touch.

There's a new port of Darius developed for this release, which is pretty rad. There's also a new port of Sega's '88 arcade version of Tetris(not to be confused with the '89-developed, unreleased Genesis version). I love that they paid someone to code new software that would've been at home in the system's original library, even if it IS Darius at 4:3 instead of the arcade's crazy 4:1 aspect ratio.
(Tangentally, the arcade Darius is wider than a dual 16:9 setup. People these days don't know what widescreen really MEANS.)

I've now achieved three endings for Bloodstained - the "kill Gebel too early", "kill Gebel the wrong way" and "kill Gebel the right way" endings, and got 99.7% completion (of the map, I guess, much less of items and monsters and alchemy recipes and all that).

I love the game's music, the game is quite pretty (although I had the graphics on "low" so I'm sure it gets much prettier), I loved the exploration and the variety of zones, I loved that even coming back through a zone after beating the boss, I was much better at fighting all the monsters than I had been going in.

My biggest problem, though, was myself rather than the game. Previously, I played the GBA Castlevanias on the way to and from work, so I if I got stuck I'd very quickly have to stop playing and do something else for a bit. On PC, when I get stuck I get stuck for a long time, and that makes me frustrated and less willing to resume playing later. Also, when I got stuck on the GBA, I was stuck on a train, so I couldn't do anything else but read item descriptions, try stupid things, etc. When I get stuck on PC, I can just look up a wiki or something, and while that's immediately gratifying, it also makes the game less fun. Bloodstained is also a good deal more obscure than the GBA Castlevanias, and has a lot more dead-ends to exhaust, making this an even bigger problem.

I wish I'd first encountered this game when I was (let's say) 12, and had a whole summer to pour into it, exploring, grinding, messing with gameplay systems, and all that. Or even that I still had a regular commute - I hundred-percent-cleared Aria of Sorrow, after all. I'm sure I would have had a *blast* and made a lot of fond memories.

As it is, though, even though I immediately started NG+, I think I might uninstall it and grab the next game from my overflowing "to play" queue. Who knows, I might come back to it later.

The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

It is definitely map completion percentage. Though you should be close to that in enemies encountered too(there's like three you could've not seen)

Today I finished playing through Famicom Detective Club II again. Both I+II are getting remade for Switch next year, so it was a great time to revisit the game.
I'm still really curious about FDC1, as it remains untranslated to this day. (though a translation started development last year)

Also, it's funny because this Super Famicom version is already a remake in itself, meaning II is getting remade twice.
If you boot up the game without any save files, you're greeted with the FDS boot screen and get to watch the old title screen of the game transition to the new version.

There is the free DLC coming later, so it would be more worthwhile to wait for that and experience the new content without having to do an extra play through.

Except that's a new playable character/game mode, not another wing of the castle. I believe starting a replay from a Miriam clear save will start replay mode with Miriam, not Zangetsu.

Never played it but looks interesting, I'll probably add it to my translation playlist.

Speaking of hacks, I've been playing some Metroid hacks from metroidconstruction and some of those are pretty amazing.

I can't recommend Project Base enough. It retain the same basic world layout but every room has been redone. New assets, new and or tweaked mechanics/physics (the backward jump is pretty fun and useful), new paths that connects some of the different zones etc. Even the Samus suit screen has been given a face-lift. It's slightly harder but not overly so. It's basically a fresh yet familiar take on an old classic most know well by now.

    On the NES front there's
    Metroid - Rogue Dawn

Only started it but it's amazingly impressive.

I just tried Rogue Dawn out, and I've got to say the execution of it is pretty great.
As far as ROM hacks go, it's so extensively changed from the original game to the point of really being its own thing. The new graphics, music, etc all have a nice mysterious atmosphere to them.

Haven't tried Project Base yet, but I'll keep that in mind next time I want to play through Super Metroid.

Indeed, it's not your run-of-the-mill hack, it's amazingly professional. There's quite a bit of ASM modifications (something a more standard hack won't have) so that probably helped.

Haven't tried Project Base yet, but I'll keep that in mind next time I want to play through Super Metroid.

There's also Ancient Chozo that's quite good (though I'd probably recommend Project Base to begin with).

It uses Project Base as its well, base, and has the same general layout as vanilla Super Metroid. It's a much tougher hack but not to the point of absurdity/not being fun. There's only one or two spots that had me go "Oh, that's what I was supposed to bomb." but other than that, fairly straight-forward (knowing the original SM map helps as finding stuff is more obscure).

There's one spot where the hatchling (not yet grown) helps you by eating debris just like the end of Metroid 2, which is something I've not seen in a SM hack before.

    edit: Kind of like this:

Another game patched/converted/ported or whatever to SA-1 (eliminating pretty much all performance problems those games had without the chip). This time it's Contra III.

The game was localized/released outside Japan but never released in North America for some reason...Usually Europe was the one that got shafted, I think they didn't even get Chrono Trigger at the time.

Been trying a few SMW hacks. Super Mario Bros. 1X is quite good. (Video)

It's a SMW hack but it's done in the style of All-Stars graphically and features levels and gameplay mechanics from a whole bunch of Mario games (including levels straight out of Super Mario Land and SMB2US). It starts out with a fairly normal degree of difficulty (about the same as the original games) but gets progressively harder and by W-6 or 7 it starts to be relatively challenging but never frustratingly so.

Wait... SMW hacks work on an snes emulator now?
