Misc software you're been using. Please provide a short description and link, what platform(s) it's available for, etc. OBS Studio For recording whatever's happening on your PC. Available for Linux and Windows, free and open source, Best capture software I tried so far. Can capture at 60, full screen running games/applications and well pretty much everything I tried recording. |

OBS Studio is a really good choice most of the time. Slightly less performant than native solutions with lower-level access such as Nvidia's whatever-they're-calling-it-this-week, but more than makes up for it in sheer volume of options. The ability to use ffmpeg flags, in particular, makes it really, really wonderful. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Screw_Yall |

obs studio is miserably awful at recording individual windows at native resolution without black borders. part of the issue is the overcentralization and expectation that videos conform to rigidly selected resolutions: youtube (maybe twitch too). in desktop browsers, images are rendered at native resolution. youtube doesn't even try. |

You can type in a custom resolution relatively easily. It's a bit of a pain but it's not like it doesn't support it. |

Yeah, I ran into some problems at first. For example with certain presets/settings it records the desktop fine but not applications running in certain full screen modes (or vice-versa). I would just get a black screen when I tried recording a game running full screen. Turns out all I had to do is select the 'game' preset or whatever it's called. |

So I've been using this site to compress PNG images: https://tinypng.com/ It generally gives a 50-60% reduction in size without any noticeable loss in quality. Relying on an external website like this isn't really ideal however so I searched for a program that could give the same results but didn't find one until I stumble upon: https://pngquant.org/ That's probably what the tinypng.com place use I'm guessing. I personally prefer the PNGoo GUI. You can batch-convert files easily by using drag and drop and there's an option to overwrite the old files. Example: Before compression - 52.2K (Retroarch screenshot) ![]() After compression 23.7K ![]() |

Me, I use PNGOut because who needs GUIs? 😽 It even has a helpful reminder on how to wildcard with CMD's FOR builtin. And since I'm lazy, I have it hooked up to the context menu, both as "Optimize" for PNG files and as "Convert" for BMP. |

https://pnggauntlet.com - a gooey in visual basic (j/k) for your Windows PNG crushing needs, losslessly. Or if you're on macOS: https://imageoptim.com/mac - Lossless recompression of PNG, JPEG, and GIF format images. For JPEG, it will optimize the Huffman encoding. For GIF, optimized lz encoding and also possibly frame splitting? https://pngmini.com - ImageAlpha for Mac, provides a handy way to visually tweak the options for PNGQuant, which lets you produce lossily optimized versions of translucent PNGs. Of course, if you like the command line, it also contains a pre-built console binary of pngquant, which will work nicely with defaults for many images, producing a differently named .png next to the input. Or if you're on Linux and still want a gooey: https://trimage.org - Lossless recompressor frontend, written in Python. Fairly recently transitioned to Qt 5, so was one of the last things I had installed on my Arch systems that required compiling freaking Qt 4 and the Python bindings. |
