Just watched the Re:Zero OVA "Memory Snow". :)

Ironic, since it's 27°C/80.6°F over here.

    My current setup: Super Famicom ("2/1/3" SNS-CPU-1CHIP-02) → SCART → OSSC → StarTech USB3HDCAP → AmaRecTV 3.10

It has been brought to my attention that seminal japanese adventure game Yu-No: Blahblah Long Name has an anime.
    ...
I mean a modern one that tries to adapt the entire game instead of throwing almost every story scene into the trash can in an attempt to do as much disservice to the relatively complex story as possible. (I watched that one, and it made me very upset. And not just because it was trying to be straight-up porn and wasn't sexy in the least.)

    Watchin' episode one now.

OH GOD, YOU CAN SEE MAIN CHARACTER'S EYES! WHAT HAS GONE WRONG HERE?!?!?!
    ...
Seriously, the character designs are kinda soft for my tastes. And character animation is pretty dodgy. I see hints of better(I think someone on staff is a Mio fan, her first appearance seems markedly higher-quality than everyone around her), and hope it pulls up. It would be totally on-brand for them to be intentionally flaky in episode one and then shift things later(the original game did a bait&switch in presentation, initially presenting as a visual novel-type game before exploding out into a point&click adventure at the end of the prologue). It doesn't seem like it will, though.

They've resisted the urge to shift the setting out of 1995. Takuya's home still has a big television with a deep video tube, and his home phone is early-90s as hell.
    ...
And then they drop the ball in the video arcade. Their close-up of Totally-Not-Raiden has an LCD screendoor effect.

I'm in. I reserve the right to complain later, but I am in.

Edit: And after episode 2, I LOVE how they're writing Toyotomi. The man shifts personas rapidly from in-charge badass to powerless underling as circumstance dictates. The show has picked up on this trait and his general unreliable buffoon aura and is playing him for laughs. This is FANTASTIC.

Well, this is weird(in more ways than one)...
    https://animenostalgia.tumblr.com/post/186235709729/to-celebrate-serial-experiments-lains-recent

The show has been made "open source" for the next 9 years, apparently mostly in response to how no one can get the PS1 "game" anymore, and it wasn't very good in the first place.

To clarify, they aren't giving people permission to use the original animation and official illustrations, but they ARE giving people(but not corporations) explicit permission to use the setting and logo(Illustrator file available upon request). So I guess it's kinda like Doom, in that the engine is free but not the WADs.

    https://www.translatetheweb.com/?from=&to=en&dl=en&a=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nbcuni.co.jp%2Frondorobe%2Fanime%2Flain%2Fttl%2F
The terms of the license are a little dubious, but it is still ... an interesting experiment, I guess. Give the fans permission to run wild and do what they will(as long as they don't do anything illegal or disrespectful or pornographic or cultish, I guess?), including sell their work. I'm curious to see what, if anything, comes out of this.

In before the thread gets derailed into a dozen pages of rants about misuse of the term "open source" and valid-but-Stallman-disapproved meaning of the word free.

It's also limited to Japanese residents. If I understand correctly, they're just saying you could make fan whatever. Which I think you could before too.

It's an interesting concept for sure and will be interesting to see how it plays out though. Never liked that series, and I can't seem to understand why it's so highly ranked. Probably the worst one that I didn't have the sense to drop, to be honest.

It had really nice music and animation though, so maybe that's why people rate it so highly.

Got this song recommended too from those, "Lain's theme", which I can't ever remember being in the series, but it's pretty rad. Sounds a suspicious lot like Trans-Europe Express, I think.

There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. You believed that you had actually held it in your hands. It was a photograph something like this.

Lain is fantastic, though I readily admit it isn't for everyone.
They've definitely expanded things over the usual japanese fan-work status, though.

Pretty sure the japanese-only thing is because international copyright law is complicated. That or they don't want to stomp on their licensee's toes too badly(though I doubt they would offend Funimation terribly).

What's different between this and doujinshis?

Sure, doujins are kinda at the margin of the law, but then corporations usually don't give a damn, and messing with fanworks is an easy way to attract bad rep, so they let it slide. Yes, even the gross tentacle porn ones.

Still, it's nice to see copyright holders actually extending an olive branch to the fandom once in a while.

...and then, you have ZUN and Touhou Project, where the rules are simple: "I do not want to read your porn AT ALL", "no professional animation works", "do not spoil endings", and "do not sell to baka gaijins until I get first dibs on your preferred sales channel!".

At the other end of the scale, you have happy lawsuit trigger Nintendo, which used to harass doujin circles in the past (not sure if they still do it nowadays).

Scope and scale. Ueda's actively encouraging people to make massive works of all sorts and then make mad bank off them(though they are encouraged to not become obsessed by profit, and also to not completely ignore costs until they go broke).

It feels like a Lain-ish thing to do.
I kinda love the "off-kilter" schedule. (Nine years, starting on the 21st anniversary of the show's broadcast. Even decades are for chumps. )

Watched that recently. Probably the last time everyone will be together in a celebratory setting for quite a while :P

Unless you put them in a high-school crossover with three other popular isekai titles.

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

A guy set fire to an animation studio in Kyoto. Dunno if this is relevant to anything being discussed here.

The biggest question in my head at the moment is: what was the motive?

Although I could imagine it might've been a disgruntled employee or something... still not a reason to cause death and injury to others

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

Apparently they've been receiving death threats for some time from someone who claims they plagiarized his work.

The perpetrator was not an employee, former or otherwise.

Well, right now he's in the burn ward because he's bad at arson. And arson in Japan can carry the death penalty even if you omit the death.

Or ex-fans. Tell everyone he's responsible for Endless Eight and see what happens.
