yes, yes we all know these *devices* suck ass, but the software can suck just as much ass too. Anyways I stumbled upon this situation just now with the Canon MG7560 scanner software: https://imgur.com/a/yctxRVw Also the PNG files produced by this scanner software can't be opened by MSPaint. They are somehow an unsupported format. I miss the Canon Scanjet scanners from 15~ years ago. The software they included did nothing dumb and also let you choose a specific portion of a scanned image to save to a file (The image preview quality was configurable independent of the actual scan too iirc, where as this new software always does a super fast low quality preview scan). I think they used a Microsoft API/interface in Windows 9x/XP for a lot of the software functionality. If I had to guess, I'd say there's probably a feature where you can scan one file, name it "something_0000.png", and then each time you press a button it makes a new scan and saves it to the same location with the same name, but with the counter incremented. If you had a stack of a hundred invoices to scan (or whatever) I can imagine that being quite handy. If that's what it's doing, maybe it's trying to add 1 to 4,198,415 then trying to format the result into 4 digits and overflowing. Kind of weird that it would do that at startup, though, and without being explicitly asked. > Also the PNG files produced by this scanner software can't be opened by MSPaint. The problem is that it shouldn't be remembering the file name used from the previous Scan Gear session, and as you said it should either ask before utilizing such a system or at the very least give an option to change the file name prefix that it's using instead of just denying the ability to use the software at all. I found one guy at the end of this thread who claimed that at least since Paint became Paint 3D, it's unable to open any file whose uncompressed size is greater than about 250MB, giving the error you describe. Looking at the TweakPNG screenshot, your image is 10208 * 14032 pixels, times 3 bytes per pixel gives a total size of ~430MB. Maybe try scanning at 600dpi or even 300dpi? It won't be as crisp, but should still be quite readable. If you're just scanning invoices to keep a convenient record of them and not scanning hard-drawn art or something, resolution probably doesn't need to be that great. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI. |

I had another smaller image with the same issue but after doing some changes in irfanview to bring down the file size the issue disappeared and I now think I know why: The image was converted to 256 colours and some glitchy phenomena in a quadrant of the image was removed which would've dramatically reduced the uncompressed size. I haven't scanned anything from under Windows since... what, a long time ago? Thankfully my good ol' Acer S2W 3300U is still supported by SANE (you do need to provide your own firmware - hope you have your Windows driver pack on a safe place!). Yes, it's a lousy scanner, sometimes there is a halo strip on my scans (which goes more or less away if I take it apart for a cleanup), the power jack has cold solder joints, and it freaks the hell out if you try to scan in grayscale... but for the rare times I use it, it does the work. OEM-included scanning apps are a pile of suck and fail. ALL of them. I've used the ones from Acer/BenQ, Canon, HP, Konica Minolta, and Epson... and ALL OF THEM have annoyed me to no end.
