Posted by sureanem "linking together a whole country/ethnicity with shoddy workmanship" is exactly the reason why the term in question is a poor choice of words, yes. Well, one of the reasons. I'm sure you don't have any aggressive or offensive intent, but consider that the same language is used by other people who do, and those people make you look bad by association. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI. |

Posted by KawaI was just pointing out that the PS4 has both HDMI output and 3.5mm outputs, making it a bad answer to the question "What kind of device do you have that has HDMI out but no 3.5mm?". And if there's multiple people wanting to listen to something you can awkwardly use a passive 3.5mm splitter and multiple headphones. I still kinda hope we'll get games utilizing 3D screens for displaying one players perspective on the polarized display panel and the other players perspective on the non-polarized display panel, so both players get the full display instead of a portion of it. Posted by Nicholas Steel Technically, the PS4 itself doesn't have any form of analog output. The controller is a different device. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. And if there's multiple people wanting to listen to something you can awkwardly use a passive 3.5mm splitter and multiple headphones. Or a pair of speakers? VR goggles, man. We need systems that can drive multiple VR goggles. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Posted by CaptainJistuce The beacons of pedantry! The beacons are lit! Jistuce calls for aid! And Covarr will answer. I believe the term you are searching for, the term which will best defend your position, is "accessory". I think most reasonable people would call a controller an accessory, yes? It can be purchased separately, and is interchangeable between units. Certainly the sites that sell them seem to agree: Amazon, GameStop, etc. all use the word. And do you know what else is an accessory? An accessory is, by its very definition, not the same thing as the device it connects to. But quite frankly, this all ignores the larger issue: HDMI is only easier in the most basic use cases. Wanna hook up your game console to a TV and nothing else? Fine and dandy. Wanna run video over HDMI but not audio, even from a device that can output audio over HDMI? Often trickier. Wanna run audio over HDMI but not video? Good luck. Discrete audio and video cables over connections that only support one or the other may mean an extra wire, but the potentially hours of headaches they save are totally worth a few seconds screwing in a cable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Screw_Yall |

Posted by CovarrHence my complaining about HDMI being fucking terrible. But HDMI is easier than everything else for ALL use cases by virtue of the fact that it is the only connector available on many devices. (I think my BluRay player and dad's DVR are HDMI-only, but don't care enough to look.) If I had my way, we'd have settled on a two-wire setup. One for video, and a second for audio. I blame France. You can see SCART's dirty influence all over HDMI. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Covarr, you can't buy brand new video game console from a retailer without it including a controller. Additional controller's are accessories. AMD Ryzen 3700X | MSI Gamer Geforce 1070Ti 8GB | 16GB 3600MHz DDR4 RAM | ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero (WiFi) Motherboard | Windows 10 x64 |

Posted by Nicholas SteelTypically, the manual lists it as an included accessory. Nonetheless, a PS4 joypad is less of a game controller and more an entire second computer. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Posted by Nicholas Steel I think this already exists, but you need either a PC driving it or a certain type of 3D TV. That said, no point in it. You could accomplish something similar without the 3D TV though with a regular display (preferably IPS) and 3d glasses. Color would be so-so, but not atrocious if you'd go for the good ones (blue/yellow). You would need software, I presume there already is some that you'd just have to coerce into doing what you want, but the glasses are less than $1 a pop so it'd still be much cheaper than a whole new TV. There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. You believed that you had actually held it in your hands. It was a photograph something like this. |

Sophie Wilson - The Future of Microprocessors - in this talk from 2016, one of the designers of the original ARM1 CPU discusses how CPUs got ten thousand times faster over the course of her lifetime, and why they aren't going to get much faster than they are now. Among other things, she discusses Moore's Law, Amdahl's Law, and has a cool "power density" chart that plots Intel CPUs from the 80386 to the Core i7 against "hot plate", "nuclear reactor" and "rocket nozzle". Spoiler: Intel hit "hot plate" shortly after the Pentium Pro, but they chickened out before the P4 could reach "nuclear reactor". The ending of the words is ALMSIVI. |

Not in the main body of the talk, although I didn't sit through the questions. The first question was about the economic restrictions that make smaller-than-28nm processes costly, and she didn't immediately start talking about giant ultra-ultra-violet lasers refracting through a fog of molten tin that absorbs 90% of the energy (which I understand is a required part of the 7nm process), so I stopped watching. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI. |

Posted by Screwtape Don't worry, man. They'll start optimizing their code any second now that Moore's law is dead. It feels like all the technology is stagnating and we're left with nothing but cleanup work. They're all just releasing the same products over and over again with a higher price tag and hoping nobody notices. Were the "end of history" folks right? The only significant events that have happened this millennium are 9/11 and various cleanup work after it, and that's coming to an end. It all feels rather depressing, really. Hope something happens.
