browser monoculture is the reason Firefox/Chrome exists and now they are encouraging it. nice going. look at Discord. they deliberately broke FF52 ESR compatibility before Quantum was released (around an entire month before). |

Posted by jjndig This explains why my brief testing attempts with Discord led to all sorts of weirdass failures with Seamonkey. Yes, I'm sadomasochist, but also have to be pragmatic: I must know why it sucks before complaining that it sucks, and oh boy... it really sucks. HARD.. Even on a 2nd-generation i5 it performs like ass. And it's a goddamned INSTANT MESSAGING "APP"!!!!! (The so-called native version is Electron, AKA the same shit but with a pretty Chrome-in-a-can installer) Oh, GitHub is also bitching that my browser is obsolete because they can't read beyond the "Firefox/x.xx" version token. (If you must know, the current SM version is 2.49.4, which is built from FF52 ESR, and 2.49.5 is still "on track" for an eventual release... someday) When desktop applications and the Internet eventually converged in the post-iPhone era, we got a nice trainwreck as a result. What does PR mean? Press Release? Pull Request? Public Relations? I always thought the driving force behind Mozilla in the end of its formation (maybe not so in the beginning) was to defeat browser monoculture. That's what they managed to achieve anyhow, and now everyone including them are going backwards and making everyone use Chrome, obsoletising old hardware and the like! Speaking of obsoleting old hardware, I hate how HTTPS is practically forced down our throats now. |

Posted by jjndigPublic relations. And they talked a lot about browser monoculture, but they really just wanted it to be a Firefox monoculture for most of their existence. Noble sentiments died with Mozilla-the-product. And people talking about browser monoculture like it started with Internet Explorer are hilarious. MICROSOFT defeated the browser monoculture by breaking Netscape's lock. And then set up a new one. Sadly, most of the history of internet browsers is everyone coding for one specific browser and telling everyone else to get bent, completely missing the point of standard communication protocols. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Posted by Covarr Get with the times, grandpa. .NET is no longer trendy, the new sexyness is JavaScript (no, I'm not interested into looking if JS can be run inside the CLR) So... how long until we have true browserception? Microsoft just introduced Bricking as a Service (BaaS): https://blogs.windows.com/buildingapps/2018/12/19/%E2%80%AFintroducing-project-mu/ Well, not really, but what could go wrong about unexpected firmware upgrades released with the same QA they're employing right now with regular Windows upgrades? Seriously, "Firmware as a Service" isn't something I want to ever hear from any hardware vendor doing something as critical as low-level hardware-specific hardware bootstrap code and services. At least something good is coming from all of this: they're opensourcing the UEFI core from the Surface firmware, because plain vanilla TianoCore isn't "flexible" enough for a fast release cycle suitable for modern disposable toys, or whatever. They're branding this as "Project Mu": https://microsoft.github.io/mu/ I wonder, why simply not contribute to Coreboot instead? EDIT: TianoCore can be used as a payload for Coreboot, so I guess Project Mu could be too (they don't consider themselves to be a fork, as they will always target the latest TianoCore sources as their base, with the MS mods on top). This doesn't include the hardware-specific bits, as it is strictly an UEFI core. Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Microsoft to its users: IE is no longer a web browser, it's a "legacy compatibility solution for when mistakes were made", so STOP USING IE RIGHT NOW, YOU MORONS! https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Windows-IT-Pro-Blog/The-perils-of-using-Internet-Explorer-as-your-default-browser/ba-p/331732 Now, can anyone tell that to all of my banks? All of them still use IE/XP in some form or other, right now, as of February 2019. Almost all of our ATMs still run XP, including every single Wincor-Nixdorf unit deployed in the last 3 years (all 10 of them, considering that our banks can't afford to buy new equipment nowadays). One of them uses IE8 every single time I do a withdrawal, complete with ActiveX joy, Worst Korea style. Another still uses IE6 for no good reason at all, and this one is state-owned, so... *shudders* Even those that DID upgraded to W7/8/10 still keep their XP/IE shitware inside VMs, ensuring that the cancer will never heal. Comedy gold material, guys. MS: "IE is dead, why you keep hurting yourself!" IE "users": "STFU, you're the last person I want to hear that from!!!" I am a web developer and the death of internet explorer would have been welcomed by me 15 years ago. I just wonder why it took so long.. Microsoft never allocated enough resources to IE to make it anything other than a burden holding back the web as a whole. The sad thing is that firefox is kind of a piece of shit these days. I'd like to use it for all my browsing needs, but it loves locking up cores a bit too much, so i use it to a limited capacity. I use the brave browser rather than straight google chrome because i figure less of my data will be leaked back to google.. I think google's recent move of breaking ad blockers will be great for browser diversity though.. unless firefox does something really retarded and follows their lead. |

Posted by neptronixModern firefox has nearly no problems with this. Certainly less than chrome. Sounds to me like a bad extension, configuration problems, or misbehaving antivirus. |

Remember those "Get Remember GWX? Did you thought MS got the message and left you alone to use your computer? BZZZT! Guess who will be back soon? Yes, it's our good old friend GWX! Kinda, sorta: with the clock running out for Win7 extended support (this next January according to MS lifecycle schedules), they're going full throttle again with the adware bullshittery: https://tech.slashdot.org/story/19/03/12/1727214/microsoft-will-now-pester-windows-7-users-to-upgrade-to-windows-10-with-pop-ups Hope they're kind enough to honor the GWX opt-out settings HAHAHAHA who am I kidding?! This is Microsoft, you WILL get Windows 10, and you will like it, and that's not an option! In other news, if your local file sharing has been crippled by January KB4480970 on Win7 (as I discovered today, when in one of the few rare occasions where I boot my rarely used W7 setups to pull some file to another laptop) because you're not inside a corporate domain and therefore MS had to revoke your filesharing privileges because SEKURITAH!, here are your workarounds: - Apply this regkey, then reboot:
- Install KB4487345. For this ~28MB patch you need to go to Windows Update Catalog, as MS won't be offering it through regular automatic updates. - Rollback KB4480970, making your system slightly less secure in the meanwhile - Update to Windows 10. Who needs SMB anyway? ...fuck this shit, yo. Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |
