> Not sure what the point of a port would be
Given the overall quality of N64 emulators, a native port of ANY N64 game can be able to provide a much better experience. Not having to emulate a foreign CPU architecture can free CPU resources for more impressive special effects, for example.

> for performance UltraHLE is already pretty much transparent
I'll pretend I didn't read that.

> and if you want fancy input then that could be done without a port like in 1964.
Trying to emulate a controller with another can be troublesome in some cases (ask the Dolphin guys - it may not be a problem for N64 but you can always do things The Proper Way with a native port). With a native port, you can improve keyboard-only experience, for starters.

> But from my understanding, it'd be nearly trivial since you have x86 shims for the N64 API already.
Was it on the original N64 SDKs? Early devkits were SGI/Irix-based, dunno about later ones. But then, Nintendo is no stranger to multiplatform development...

Dude, just enable the goddamned swap. Dunno about your beloved *BSDs, but on Linux I've been using swap FILES since I learned you can actually have unholy Windows-isms on your Linux.

Sure, you can always buy more RAM, but still swap is there for very good reasons.

> Enabling swap isn't recommended on SSDs

Ah, that old myth that seems to still be around (this used to be true with early SSDs which were nothing but USB sticks with an ATA controlled bolted on, basically). Unless you're using noname Chinaware junk with bottom-of-the-barrel flash ICs that were rejected for a reason, your average SSD will be able to stand a few petabytes of writes before giving up the ghost.

I can't get you guys, what the hell do you do with your computerizers!?!?!??!

T9/iTAP beats touchscreen keyboards any day of the week, one of the many, MANY reasons I still hate smartdevices.

As for input prediction, doesn't that involve obscene amounts of resource usage just for a niche feature with little gain? Dude, for your own good, stop overthinking stuff! Let it be, there are still good reasons of why native ports of SM64 (or any console game, for that matter) make sense over emulation.

...now after reading some comments here and there, it seems the biggest roadblock for a possible PC port would be dealing with the rather primitive SGI RSP graphics architecture, it doesn't sound like a walk in the park to essentially rewrite half of the game for OpenGL (I'll pretend DirectX does not exist for this example, but the end result will be the same)

Just learned about this tragedy (it's doing the rounds around all the news sources I know).

This is terrorism, plain and simple (and of the "not by angry religious zealots" kind that everybody knows). This guy deserves a fate worse than death. No mercy, no sympathy.

I heard Sentai Filmworks is doing a crowdsourcing campaing for donations towards helping KyoAni rebuild.

On the other side, FFS JAPAM:
- They still neglect their heavy mind health troubles they have in their society, where police keeps ignoring random death threats that are increasingly becoming true.
- I can't believe that for a so-called 1st-world nation, their fire safety codes don't enforce fire evacuation rehearsals! Most of the people that died was due to suffocation by smoke, mostly because they didn't knew how to safely evacuate.

Why bother MITM'ing connections if you can always do it Soviet Venezuela style: they simply let all of your connections die by plain resource starvation, without getting fixed, EVER.

https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2019/07/18/acronym-fever-we-need-an-acronym-for-that

Naming stuff is hard. Coming with clever acronyms for your names is even harder.

This applies for everything, from molecules to cellphone apps.

True story: at $FORMER_JOB, we were trying to come up with a new PoS app. $FORMER_BOSS and me spent like 3 hours searching every name we could think in Google until we found one that wasn't in use... and that HE liked (fun fact: xPOS 4-character sequences were all used up, some of them by non-PoS-related products!). He ended picking some lameloid name (to the lines of "Simple Invoices" or something like that).

Nevermind the fact that I got laid off after only 3 months of development, where the only stuff that I managed to code was a very incomplete product catalog module.

Managed to finally get Reicast working here.

Turns out that it wants an OpenGL 4.3 GPU, which means it won't run on a lowly Sandy Bridge HD3000 (which is one major release behind). But the X11 error wasn't giving any useful advice. Once trying with my 32X GeForce 610M through primusrun, I got Reicast's GUI working.

...too bad its documentation is still awful, to not say "non-existant". Also, I can't believe why there are emudevs still reinventing the wheel with custom UIs. Look, we're in 2019, we're no longer running DOS, but not all targets are cellphones! If you're making an emulator for Real Computers™, you should stick to any of the following UI targets:

1) Native widgets (that is: use the toolkit provided by your OS, menu bar, standard dialogs, bury your fancy logo at the About screen)
2) Libretro core
3) 10-foot UI (for those of us that don't want to deal with Retroarch yet still want to drive the UI with the very same gamepad we use to play. Try to get your SDL joystick support right!)
4) CLI, the mupen64plus way (leave everything else to the frontend authors)

Everything else is wasting the time of everybody involved, both devs and users. And no, I don't want a "join our Discord" button right at the main window! (thankfully Reicast allows to disable all those "social featurettes")

Anyway, it seems they DID improved the OpenGL version detection routines on recent commits, as if you compile today, you will now get a proper error message telling that your GPU is ancient (I don't get why the high OGL version requirement for a DC emulator, but whatever). Now I can run all of the existing ports of Puyo Puyo~n, and naturally the DC version looks gorgeous when compared with the downscaled PSX port, or the blurry look of the N64 version (the latter still being very tricky with GFX plugins - only CEN64 can run it as intended due to its LLE nature)

To the Reicast guys: good work with the emulator, but forget 5 minutes about your beloved cellphones, bring a less broken desktop UI, and get someone to write USABLE DOCS!!! It's no fun an emulator where you have to dive into emuforums just to understand how your BIOS files should be named, or dealing with SDL keycodes (fuck that shit, yo.).

I don't see myself coming back to Redream... for now.

(please, PLEASE disregard the comments section; it's full of asshole trolls that really REALLY would love to move to NK. Ugh, why do I even read Slashdot?!)

There is a small error on the summary: widespread blackouts ALREADY ARE the new normal, and people have accepted them because the other option would be to fight, and "nobody wants to die murdered by the communists" because we're pussies.

This is certainly going to become worse, without any chance of slightly improving. But communists will not go away, Maduro will keep becoming even more insane (just like Castro or the Kims), and the LOLopposition insists into wasting their time in that utopic peaceful resolution that will never happen (their latest half-assed attempt: reviving a Cold War era treaty that last time it was used didn't even worked in favor of us Americans because Her Majesty wanted some stupid islands "back"! Guys, really, come on. I know you don't want to get jailed by the dictatorship, but you're going to end murdered anyway because Maduro and its cronies are PURE PIECES OF ROTTEN SHIT, so go and find some weapons that can actually free us of this self-inflicted pain!). This country ran out of luck, hope, and outlook years ago. The ones that didn't left yet DO NOT CARE. The ones that left don't care either.

Please also disregard sureanem's highly convoluted non-solutions to actual problems. Really buddy, do you want to come live here so much!?

How about you stop suggesting unrealistic solutions straight out of a weird Slashdot/Hacker News/Reddit/GNU maillists hybrid?

SSH tunnels to some fancy VPN don't help the fact CANTV will NEVER fix my broken phone line, and cellphones won't help either (most likely the next stage is some corrupt telco tech selling my broken phone line to an Arab/Chinese fucker so they can run the umpteenth food "minimarket", selling a kilo of corn flour in $$$ to the poor because the new way to get rich here is to abuse starving people). But keep believing that I can swap my phone line with a couple of tin cans and a string, or something equally stupid (you may as well get a job with the commies).

Working online is no longer an option for me given the current status of affairs over here. Don't even bother.

And the next time you DARE suggesting dealing with buttcoins on ANY of MY threads, straight to the ignore list you go. Seriously, cut it off. CRYPTOCURRENCIES ARE NOT REAL MONEY.
I don't want to hear that BS from you (or anyone else, for that matter) anymore. I can't make money out of thin air anyway.

If you excuse me guys, I'll be back to pumping water to my main reservoir. Yes, running water is another nightmare over here. Having to hold yourself from taking a shit/peeing just because the commies are too busy frying every single water pump in the state is a sure way to get a disease, but once again, it's already the new normal. A couple protest, a zillon don't care and just blame someone else (usually not the government, for whatever sick reason)

And now, the folks at Fedora also hopped on the failbus after losing their collective minds:

First, the death of 32-bit x86 is now set: 32-bit kernels are no more, and they're considering to kill some 32-bit repos too:
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Fedora-i686-Drop-Kernel-Plus

And today, we got the kicker: not only x86-32 is too stale for them, they're also trying to raise the bar on x86-64:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/MPFXH4Y5LDC5L2VXWKUHAX3WAKBQXR4U/
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Fedora-31-Possible-AVX2-Require
Yup, someone is trying to convince the world that any 64-bit CPU made before 2014 should be thrown in a dumpster (yay, leadtin-flavored water!), because it's AVX2 OR BUST. The feature that didn't got into Intel CPUs until Haswell (so my Sandy Bridge is now considered "prehistoric, museum piece"), or whatever AMD was selling back then, in the late pre-Ryzen era.

All of this because the Silly Valley "a new Mac a year" hipsters have finally infected FOSS down to the bone. There goes "Linux is friendly for the environment" and "Linux is helpful for 3rd-world shitholes with limited access to technology". Luckily I stopped being a RH/Fedora user almost a decade ago (and even then I stopped updating at Fedora Core 6, 12 years ago), but this is only matter of time before this anti-consumeritis spreads to the rest of Linux distros.

Oh, Intel still sells 32-bit and AVX(2)-less systems right now, in 2019 (the Celeron and Atom lines do still exist, and still are somewhat-decent sellers, y'know). But you won't be running new Fedora releaes (or an hypothetical future RHEL release) on those anymore. All of this because those new-for-the-sake-of-oooh-shiny kids haven't learned how to use compiler switches (there is no need to bring separate amd64 and amd64-avx2 repos unless you want to drive your users crazy!). And if you absolutely need to squeeze performance of your state-of-the-art Ryzen rig down to the transistor level, you should be using Gentoo, not forcing others to pollute the environment and chase your users away!

Also, if your software is also performance-sensitive, do runtime detection of CPU features and pick the most appropiate code path suitable to the host CPU.

I've seen plenty of software to do that, both proprietary and FOSS.

I do, from time to time, build my own ffmpeg&friends (stashed in /opt to not conflict with the distro-provided versions), and know to use -march/-mtune (really, only the former is useful for those of us building binaries for personal usage). But that's the exception, and for everything else, I'm no ricer. I don't understand why this proposal by some Fedora guy even came to exist (it was quickly shot down by some of their own people: "my 11yo Core 2 laptop still serves me well" / "none of my production servers are AVX2 yet"... it was only missing a "goodbye Fedora, and thanks for all the fish!")

And here I thought IBM bought Red Hat to stop the madness.

What I'm hearing here is "learn FreeBSD".

The Troo UNIX® Way graybeards are dying. That's AWESOME, we need no "fuck you, computers have to be HARD!" user-unfriendly guys anymore.

Sadly, they're being replaced not by conscious people with great ideas, but by Silly Valley VC kids where the motto is "more Javascript and a new iPhone a year is the solution to every problem". They're way worse than your Poetterings and the like: they believe anyone not using a computer bought in the last 18 months is Doing It Wrong, and completely forgot why computers exist in first place (hint: they're not for displaying your ePeen or how overdrawn is your Mastercard). "Optimizing is HARD, let's make everybody buy new computers for our free piece of software!".

One thing is a Gentoo ricer which will do everything to shave off that 0.3% from their iPod access times, but another (and very disgusting) thing is those guys that do everything to defend software bloat while driving away their userbase just because they're too poor/unwilling to buy a new Mac or an overclocked i9/Threadripper rig.

My Sandy Bridge laptop says "fuck you very much" to guys like those.

(your beloved *BSDs will eventually get infected, make no doubt of that)

Still been playing those Mario 64 ROMhacks (can't wait until the dissasembly becomes fully public to see what direction is the scene going to take).

I want to murder my cameraman. Lakitu, YOU'RE FIRED!

Seriously, the camera is often the Achilles' heel of ROMhacks, often leading to instadeaths just because the camera gets stuck at impossible angles, or becomes impossible to control. Some hacks have tried mitigating that by treating the C-buttons as a C-stick, but when you're playing with a keyboard, things are still not pretty.

I'm kinda in love with Ztar Attack Rebooted - lots of tough-as-nails stars, but plenty of easy ones too. Very balanced hack overall. The new Boos stage is quite awesome - for whatever reason, I enjoy Boo-infested zones, even if they become annoying as hell at times.

Oh god, the camera was by far the toughest enemy for me in my run of (vanilla) SM64. To be fair, it's actually pretty decent I think if you compare it to a lot of other 3D games of that era but yeah, this was the prehistory of cameras in 3D platformers.

Yeah, it was great back in its time because there was little else to compare to.

Also, it does not help when you haven't played the game for over a decade. The SM64 camera system hasn't aged well, and so are my SM64 skills :/ I remember having gotten 100 out of 120 stars with a keyboard back in 2003 (no luck beating Bowser with such a setup for the final time, tho). Now I can barely get HALF that, and certainly none at the usual instadeath traps (Tick Tock Clock, Rainbow Ride, and anything with floating islands in general)

I'm well aware of the fact that "user friendly" can be a double edged sword.

At one end, without user friendly systems and applications, personal computers might as well have never happened, we would not have cellphones, online banking, credit/debit cards, videogame consoles, media players, or any of the modern electronics we love. Computers would belong to a few institutions, where only a few select would be allowed to use them. This leads us to the "graybearded sysadmin" scenario some of us particularly hate.

At the other end... we get the smartphone generation, where a few "disruptive entrepreneurs" took user friendliness to the extreme, dumbing down to the point of uselessness, trying to cater to that mass of population to which computers and electronics are little more than tools to achieve something, without considering consequences or side effects. The extreme who got us diseases like social networks and advertising, and yes, that's another scenario some of us really hate.

Extremes are bad, but that's not excuse to condemn user friendliness on principle. I will never use cellphone crapps beyond the basics, but that doesn't mean I'll ditch web browsers and move to Lynx/Elinks (I like watching my porn pretty images and stylesheets, thanks) or become a "get off my lawn" grumpy man. What we need is fresh blood WITH RATIONAL IDEAS ("old" doesn't have to mean "museum grade", but "we can take advantage of what we have"). None of this "cellphone revolution in the Valley", but also definitely none of this "the BSD way is the only true way" elitist stuff. Too bad taking sensible decisions these days is highly frowned upon all across the board...
