Steam needs no excuses for a random sale. But if it involves Japanese games, it's greatly welcome! https://store.steampowered.com/sale/gws2019/ Go get your cheap Neptunias, keep enlarging your endless visual novel backlog, and now that ZUN has officially sanctioned the sale of Touhou fangames, legalize your RAWMs too! Still refuse to believe (I'm not watching the news, as usual) To be blunt, I have anything but good wishes for this shithole. As they say, "believe no one, trust nobody". Whatever it is the outcome, it will be ugly. And we will still starve to death because this is "everybody vs. everybody" (that's what we wanted, according to the deepest desires of most Venezuelans), even if Maduro gets the fuck out of here (hopefully DEAD, but that's me being selfish I guess). Please, forget about Venezuela, we basically no longer exist for anyone that cares. Also: gotta love when half of the Internet breaks when the communitards force your ISP to block Google and Twitter. Dude, I don't even WATCH the news, much less participate into the "social media" cesspool, so why punish me too?! Oh right, communism at work. Posted by Vladiskovwashere Fact: I got connected to THE WORLD in 2001. It wasn't because $MOM considered "hey, there is this cool tech thing that could be very worthy for your education!!!". No, rather it was CANTV doing a national Internet tour around schools, setting up prepaid dialup accounts for students, and demoing connections with those fancy white boxes full of blinking lights (known as "mo-dems"). For a VEB 5000 fee, you got your very own dialup account, complete with a free email account (which I used until late '18 when even those stopped working), and a bag with a self-setup CD-ROM (containing CANTV-branded IE4/5 installers for both Mac and Windows). Plus your 5000 classic bolivars would buy you THREE HOURS of unlimited access! (for our next top-up, a Bs. 5000 card would buy 3 days, while a full week required a Bs. 10000 card, and that was quite a lot of money for a high school student back then!). Weeks later, I was hooked at home, and after blowing some cash in those goddamned prepaid cards, Mom just called CANTV and subscribed our line to a unlimited dialup connection (and a couple months later later, to a flat-rate voice service, after getting the surprise of her life when the phone bills arrived....) Fun fact: When some of the CANTV course tutors tried to login with their corporate-issued accounts, their modems rebounded them, HARD. But our freshly-created accounts were good enough for being accepted into TEH INTERWEBZ of the early XXIth century! Of course, the first account they tried was mine. My 3 complimentary hours? GONE with the wind~~~ But hey, I can remember the very first website I visited from those Win95 boxes running IE4: Pokemon.com :D Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Convince your foreign leaders to take action then, instead of wasting their words with more token efforts. "Strong words" and "polite petitions" don't bring down bloody dictatorships. Effective and massive military action do. Nobody inside Venezuela can't (or won't, depending on their particular agenda) solve this situation anymore. The rest of the people simply don't care enough. Some protest, you see volumes at some of the largest cities, but the rest either don't give a fuck, or already left the country in the (naive) hopes that "other people can clean up the mess later". As for me, I lost all hope years ago. Sorry for sounding like one of those "I hate everybody, get off my lawn" guys, but... This is the SECOND worst shit I've seen this week... And it's just Wednesday! Seriously, Sega, please die in a fire and step on a Lego. This. Is. Not. Sonic. This is more generic Hollywood garbage, with a guy on a Sonic cosplay (and using Licensed Big Brand Clothing®, no less). Even that "Eggman" doesn't look nor act like the Eggman we love to hate! Was it that hard to just come up with a CGI-based (because that's what Pixar/Dreamworks told us to believe, that 2D is dead) in-universe movie that both fans and non-fans could like together? Also: the "electric hair" stuff. Since when Sonic is freakin' Flash, eh Hollyboners!?!?!?!? Looks like whoever came up with the script for this shit never played a Sonic game in their lives (and since this comes from Hollywood and its less-than-stellar videogame movie adaptations, that's actually what's happening here too) ...I'm glad I stopped consuming Hollywood years ago. I had to watch the trailer to convince myself that not only there is little faith in mankind remaining, but also that Sega isn't willing to listen to their fans, because the men in expensive suits know better, amirite? This is not for us, sorry. Not for me, at least. I wouldn't even pirate this trash, much less pay for watching it. UPDATE: I'm sad to admit that it seems Nintendo has won this round: unlike the Detective Pikachu movie, people hate the Sonic trailer! https://www.cartoonbrew.com/feature-film/the-new-sonic-the-hedgehog-trailer-doesnt-get-the-reaction-paramount-hoped-for-173426.html Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

It's the Mario move all over again... ...but this time they raised the bar. And by "raised", I mean "shot it with a bazooka". But at least I gotta admit that among all this raging dumpsterfire, the only good part of the trailer is the Paramount logo effect with the Sonic rings replacing the stars. Broadband didn't became a thing over here until 2001, and even then most places of the country didn't got upgraded until 2004 at the earliest, mainly due to technical reasons (our late-70s legacy analog phone centrals being the #1 reason: DSL required a digital backend or something like that). 256/128k was the most common service plan, with the 1M/256k being reserved for the elite. But back then CANTV wasn't the socialist shithole it became in 2007 when it was forcibly renationalized (it was just a shitty telco - their billing department was a unholy mess, but you didn't had to wait 5 years to get your phone service fixed when it failed). Even today, 10M/768K is the fastest plan they offer... but very few can actually reach HALF of those speeds. For most, the realistic limit is at 3M/768K, assuming your wiring is spotless. The competition is a joke: Cable? There is Inter, that offers a 20M connection... capped to hell and back, and with substandard performance at best (the electronics deep fryer still comes for free), and it's not available for most subscribers (In other cities, replace "Inter" with "Supercable" - same junk, different badge). And don't get me started with LOLwireless... might as well deploy IP over avian carriers :D Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Posted by Vladiskovwashere Cable coverage here is weird. Unlike USA, monopolies are uncommon: you usually have two choices on most cities, and it's only at very small towns (think remote rural places) where you have no choice but the incumbent cableco (usually those places still run their rudimentary cable providers, where the concept of Community Antenna TV is still kickin' alive, now with Telemundo telenovelas on top!). Supercable footprint is non-existing outside largest cities (i.e. Caracas, Puerto La Cruz, Puerto Ordaz), while Inter tends to cover the rest of the country rather well thanks to their local mom-and-pop cableco buying spree in the late '90s (that's how they entered my city in 1997, by acquiring the two local cable providers). If you're at the west/center, your options are usually Inter/SC/NetUno (pick any two). East/South? Swap NetUno with Planet Cable. ...and then, you always have satellite, which ate the cable subscriber base for breakfast: once DirecTV started offering prepaid services, cablecos started bleeding consumers (this is why now Inter offers sat service too. Hell, even CANTV does sat TV now... if all you want to watch is communist propaganda and -if you're lucky- Discovery Channel). But then, satellite is useless for data services unless you're Big Oil or a bank. And even if you can afford it, it will still be a miserable experience (one of my banks was unable to get any kind of wired service when they opened their local branch 4 years ago, so they have to deal with a utterly shitty sat provider whose uptime has as many nines as Cirno's IQ - even their sole ATM works over satellite IN THE MIDDLE OF A MEDIUM-SIZED CITY!) Mozilla broke your addons ONCE AGAIN because they're https://news.slashdot.org/story/19/05/04/0457201/a-glitch-is-breaking-all-firefox-extensions https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19823701 Oh wait, this time wasn't a deliberate action from the enemy (addon signing certificate expired - no, you "tech journalist" illiterates, an expired cert IS NOT A "glitch" by any means!), more like a consequence of another earlier deliberate action (mandatory code signing for addons). Still, if you're an addon user, you know this really sucks and aren't precisely wishing good things to Mozilla's staff. Since Mozilla can't really fix this without issuing renewed certificates (which will require a Firefox update), these are your workarounds for today: - Rollback your PC clock to a couple days before the troublesome cert expiration date (and risk breaking everything else that relies on accurate date stamps, like websites failing to work just because your PC clock is off) - Disable code signing for addons (xpinstall.signatures.required = false). Unfortunately that only works if you're running ESR or Developer builds, not the regular mainstream build since that's aimed at "computer-challenged people" - Try this (convoluted, involves unpacking addons!) or this (danger stranger Javascripts!). You have to redo that each time you start your browser (1) or once a day (2) until Mozilla gets its shit together and fixes their browser - Official workaround: enable Studies/Normandy (whatever that is, apparently this is enabled by default for most plebs nowadays), which allows Mozilla to - Have you considered to move to Seamonkey? > All I know is that it integrates some stuff I don't want (like an email client), has bad extension support, and is poorly updated. 1) I DO use the email and IRC (ChatZilla) client, hence they're stuff I do want/need. I'll grant you that the HTML editor is pure garbage, but since it isn't based off Electron, no Javascript boys would want to touch it. 2) Not their fault. Seamonkey supports XUL-based addons, now deemed as "legacy junk" by Mozilla hipsters. Support for WebExtensions is in the works, apparently (not that I want them in first place, but they're pretty much forced to, given the shared Gecko base) 3) Absolutely not their fault. If only they had more manpower... > But I know you use it, so what are the upsides? - SANE UI. You know, OS/WM-provided title bar, menu bar, shared toolbar+address/search bar, bookmarks bar, tabs, client area, status bar. Just like good ol' Firefox 3.6, definitely something you can't have past FF29/56. - Not ruled by a bunch of art school dropout hipsters that believe that I should not have choice on my settings because "it's for my own good" - For the people that hates Poetteringware(tm), you can still use ALSA as an audio backend under Linux - No hidden experiments, no secret advertising (Looking Glass, the whole Mr. Robot stunt), no shoehorned "pref updates" (Normandy), nothing that gets in your way. You only get a web browser (plus some extra tools you're free to ignore, I doubt the ~100MiB from your SeaMonkey folder are going to bloat your HDD/SSD too much, considering your glorified IM clients can easily take triple that space) - Not a product by Moonchild Productions, where they have grown up to the status of "Mozilla-lite" ("'your browser you way', except when we say the contrary!"). I'm very happy with Seamonkey. I don't need support for the "latest and greatest" in the clusterfuck of the "living standard" that is HTML5/JS (dear god, who in the hell decided it was a good idea to not have stable versions of anything anymore!?). I'm well aware of the limitations of the project (mostly caused by Mozilla, who would be happy to kill the project for good and have done their hardest to ensure it so). Still, behind the scenes there IS progress, but they can only do so much considering there are next to no active devs willing to contribute with the project, and the Gecko codebase is no walk in the park for any coder out there. Solitaire. Yes, I'm not joking. Due to the endless daily blackouts over here, the only videogame I can reliably play is Solitaire on my cellphone. Concretely, the BREW port of Solitaire Deluxe on my good ol' RAZR VE20, which was released almost a decade ago. Animations can be kinda laggy at times (don't know if to blame the BUGGYBUGGYBUGGY Motorola firmware, or GOSUB60's BREW/C++ code, as other games on this cellphone rarely lag, but other features of said firmware do, very noticeably. But I digress...), but you get a bunch of varieties that will get you entertained for as long as your battery holds up. Or pissed off, if you decide to play modes like Golf in non-Turbo mode (where kings end card runs, which means you can't play aces or queens on top of those... which leads to basically unwinnable-by-design games!). [software preservation rant] Too bad noone ever bothered cracking Qualcomm's BREW mild layers of DRM (compared with whatever Apple is now using on their iDevices, for example), which means: 1) On most firmwares, filesystem access is blocked to some or all places (my VE20 is the former case), which means you can't dump your own games/apps! 2) An option is using some VERY EXPENSIVE service apps to perform a full memory dump of your phone storage area. Except when your OEM decided to block that too! (Motorola didn't used to do that except for Verizon firmwares. Verizon never sold the VE20, but Motorola locked out that backdoor on the VE20 firmware) Hello undumpable ROMs~ 3) Even if you manage to dump your game/app (no matter how you achieve your goal), good luck getting any use of your backup. BREW app binaries (.mod files) target your phone architecture (which is ALWAYS some flavor of ARM, depending on your specific Qualcomm chipset). There are phone SIMULATORS (provided either by Qualcomm or your phone OEM as part of BREW SDKs), but they're not EMULATORS of any kind (the simulators are x86 binaries and they only run x86 .mod binaries -a specific target on the SDK-; if you need to do native ARM debugging you're supposed to do that on the target device, using a debug-enabled BREW firmware). Even uploading those to an actual phone involves actual usage of more restricted Qualcomm tools, and the generation of a device-specific signature (a .sig file which includes your phone ESN/MEID/IMEI) signed by either Qualcomm or your carrier: back when BREW was a thing, each time you bought an app from your carrier mobile app store, their backends would automatically generate said signature for you... and this is why if you swapped phones, the only way to move your apps from a phone to another (assuming the app/game was available for your new phone as each binary was device-specific: a Motorola V3m .mod would not run on a LG MX500, despite both phones being based off the same QC MSM6500 chipset!) involved calling your carrier to transfer your app licenses (something which most non-USAian carriers never ever did, including Movilnet: your only option was to purchase again your apps, and hope your phone never breaks/gets stolen/have its firmware updated). For software developers, you could get your signatures directly from Qualcomm... at $4 a pop (minimum purchase: $400 for 100 signatures, good for one year!). OUCH! tl;dr: Thought the iDevices were horrible for software preservation? No, Qualcomm had something TEN TIMES WORSE well before the first iPhone was in the drawing board! Consider each and every BREW game/application ever made lost FOREVER thanks to Qualcomm's (and carriers) greed, including my beloved copy of Solitaire Deluxe :/ Dunno if Mobile Deluxe ever published a J2ME port (which thankfully are MUCH easier to dump and preserve, at the cost of lower performance because Java), but the game still survives on modern smartdevices... albeit with ads (and most likely spyware and some form of microtransactions, just like any good cellphone game nowadays) [/software preservation rant] Speaking about solitaire videogames, the original Windows version has just been inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, where it joins other revolutionary videogames that represent significant landmarks of history, like Doom, WoW, and of course, Tetris (which every cellphone owner -dumb or smart- should have installed on their devices). Laugh all if you want, but any serious PC Master Race gamer has played good ol SOL.EXE at least a few dozen times in his/her lifetimes (in fact it was one of my first videogames ever, at least on PCs). To celebrate this, I decided to play, for the first time ever in my life, the Windows 7 version of Solitaire. First things first: the executable is no longer called SOL.exe, but Solitaire.exe. And it now requires a video card with some sort of 3D acceleration, because Microsoft deciced it was a GREAT idea to rebuild it as a D3D9 game! (it now has sounds over DirectSound, and it even links to an XInput DLL, maybe this thing can be played with a Xbox pad?). All of this for those shiny new card designs (face cards designs are really weird, I can't get used to them), silly animations and sound effects (which thankfully can be disabled), not very useful hints, and the ability to detect unwinnable game situations (which often fails). Oh, and they ruined the iconic game win animation show: the cards just "fall down" from their decks, to "shatter" at the bottom of the display. This is... quite stupid. But hey, under the heavy glossy paint coatings, it's still good ol' Klondike under the hood, and you will get hooked in no time anyway - that's Solitaire for you :) Before you ask: fuck FreeCell (I suck big time at that game), and to hell with Spider (hated it when it was first introduced at Windows Me, and still hate it) Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Posted by JieFK The only reason I haven't tried Bill's builds yet is the lack of localizations (and the fact he builds his Linux binaries against slightly newer versions of libc/libstdc++6 than the ones found on Debian Jessie, but this is mostly a moot point now that I'm pretty much done updating to Stretch). He has working Win64 builds which is something I really want to check it out. As for sites nagging me about "YOUR BROWSER IS A DINOSAUR!!!", I tend to ignore them. GitHub still works fine (you can dismiss their warning, which for some reason has a IE icon). Google search box is somewhat broken, but I pay no attention to that too as long as search works fine (I usually use the tiny search box on my browser toolbar anyway). The rest of the sites I use on a daily fashion? (Danbooru, Pixiv, Slashdot, banks) They all work fine. The only concern would be security issues, but running an adblocker greatly helps mitigating those. Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Posted by sureanem Going offline, maybe? Or, non intrusive ads served from your OWN domain. No scripts, no client-side tracking shit, just a clickable banner. CRYPTOJUNK IS NOT REAL MONEY. There is no admissible CPU load AT ALL, hence I will be closing that browser tab to never come back as long as I notice the CPU load (and since not everybody browses from a top-of-the-line i9/Ryzen, I'll notice it, oh yeah). Web pages are for displaying information, while allowing to a limited degree of interaction, not for pushing client-side workloads (use a native application for that if you must!), much less for burning my precious CPU cycles on buttcoins. I'll take the chance to inform you guys that my personal site is going offline on May 28th (that is, 3 weeks from now on): I've just got the yearly bill from my hosting, and instead of just being "expensive, but I can stomach it just like I've done in the last 3 years because it's not THAT bad" to "severe jab to the liver". I haven't served a SINGLE AD since 2001, I have never profited from having an online presence. Hell, I don't even track my users (outside of the heavily outdated statistics PHP junk I had installed in 2007 or so, which doesn't even recognize Webkit-based browsers at all, and only recognizes Firefox because I hacked the script in 2008). Since the site isn't "sustainable" (and unlike previous years, "cheap" is no longer a valid word in our dictionary), I guess my only option is to shut down the lights for a while. C'est la vie. https://schnapple.com/idtech/ This guy managed to port every single DOOMY DOOMS OF DOOMED DOOM (AKA id Tech-based id Software games up to 2004) to iDevices. It all started with the goal of reviving the already existing official Wolfenstein 3D iOS port that sadly no longer works with recent iThings because id never made 64-bit versions of it, and anything past iOS 10 is 64-bit ONLY (because this is Apple's "fuck the past, we're switching CPUs again!"). Granted, having a new port of Doom to $RANDOM_DEVICE is hardly impressive nowadays (considering that game can run on nearly everything that has a CPU and a framebuffer, from i386 PCs to printers and smart toasters), but everything else? You don't see Quake (or Wolf3D) ports getting that much love when compared with Doom, that's for sure. Either he improved existing ports (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom), or started from scratch (Quake, Doom 3), sometimes borrowing code from other existing targets (from Android to WebAssembly!), but you can now play every single classic id FPS game, just like John Carmack never intended to! The guy has made sure to release ALL THE CODES, and to log the gory details of each port on separate post. A few notes: - YOU NEED A MAC, Xcode, and an Apple developer account: this is NOT for jailbroken devices, you need to supply your own .WADs (or whatever), build your own binaries, and get them blessed by - There are ports for iPhone/iPad (iOS) and Apple TV (tvOS). Good luck fragging Cacodemons with a... remote controller?! - The Doom app has separate targets for Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom. - The Quake II/III apps have working multiplayer and a server browser! - The Doom 3 app is based on the original release from 2004, not the improved BFG Edition from nearly a decade later (this also means it won't work with the GOG version, as they only sell the BFG Edition; you need to either buy from Steam or a physical media version). Not that it matters that much, as the port runs like ass on everything that is not a $1000 iPhone X or better. Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Posted by sureanem Posted by sureanem If you run a popular site, advertisers will find a way to reach you, since they know your place is a good vehicle to sell whatever products and services they have, assuming they understand the following: 1) Target: obviously you're going to have a hard time selling flour on a PC overclockers' site. 2) Don't overdo it! If you run one of said "controversial sites" (politics, Nazi/KKK/Taliban shit, Poetteringware™, etc.), no sane advertiser will want to touch it, but I'm pretty much sure their target will find a way to support their site. Just not involving buttcoins or PayPal buttons you can't use anyway, since historically there have been other ways to do so. "People not wanting to pay for things" are a completely different problem, and advertising/cryptojunk won't solve that - it's a SOCIAL problem product of the inherent selfishness built into the human being. "Adware" is just a consequence of that fact - at a first look ads aren't evil (if you aren't interested, just scroll down), but the "Big Data" era perverted the concept down to the bone, and advertising is now considered an evil greater than wars and communism. I don't mind a discreet 468x60 ad banner at page top or bottom, linked to a simple redirect server-side script ("servername/foo/adclick.something?adID=whatever"). But the moment you go over that simple threshold and start shoving down client-side tracking scripts, pop-ups/pop-unders, Flash, autoplaying audio/video, aggressive jQuery abuse, shitcoin miners... well, now you understand why adblockers exist and why anyone (outside of normies) want the advertising industry to die in a sea of fire. To be clear: I don't block ads out of privacy reasons (as I've said countless times: I am statistics noise, I live in a shithole where I can't even buy your shit even if I really wanted to!). I started blocking ads out of PERFORMANCE reasons: my hardware is old, and my network access is slow and very unreliable. It first started with Flashblock when websites started abusing Flash for autoplay crap, and now extended to a DNS block which kills most adverts dead in the water, safe or not. And even without ads, the modern web is just a bloated unbrowsable mess for anyone without a top-of-the-line Mac/gamer-class rig/$1000 flagship cellphone :/ Posted by sureanem So are illegal drugs, slaves, pirated software, stolen goods, Enron shares, tulips, WoW gold, and most poisons. The fact I can exchange something for money doesn't really makes it a form of money, or even something of value. It only shows that with enough BS/force, I can convince a fool to lose their money. Repeat after me: CRYPTOJUNK IS NOT REAL MONEY. It has never been, it will NEVER be, no matter how many Silly Valley VCs and vulture banks you get on board. (And don't come with me with "butbutbut your bank accounts are nothing but numbers on a database on a computer!" Those numbers ARE backed and protected by a complex regulatory system in place by the government, which I trust more than any idiot doing a ICO despite being... well, a bunch of communists!) Posted by sureanem http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://mi.tsdx.net.ve/ Archive sez "maybe, kinda". The main place is there, but then there are plenty of non-public links there (mainly pictures, as I've used my place in the past as my own image host for message boards and stuff). Thankfully I've just done a backup of everything there (I just use imgur nowadays), and if I get real bored, I may just clean it up and drop it at Mega or something, if someone gives a damn. No, losing a website that barely anyone visits anymore (and that hasn't been updated in over a decade because personal homepages are for dinosaurs) doesn't bug me. What is really going to HURT me is the loss of my personal email address there, as I'm using that one in plenty of places around the Internet. Oh boy, switching email addresses on those places is going to be fun: on most messageboards it's simple, on some places it's a minor annoyance at best (get confirm link on old email first), then there are places like Steam where anything could happen... and then there are BANKS, where "changing email addresses online is a SECURITY CONCERN, therefore you gotta move yer ass to the nearest branch and spend half a day there!". And I'm not fond of switching everything back to GMail, as I would be down to a single point of failure: my CANTV address stopped working last year just like everything at that commie ISP, and while I do have an Hotmail account since forever, I haven't used that one in years, plus you can't use it with real mail clients unless if you pay, I guess. That is the whole point of paying for your own email, but you can't just have your own cake and eat it since that's now verbotten here :/ Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |
