Posted by funkyass I read somewhere that, depending on the OEM, they might not run unless you stress the PCIe bus. Maybe it’s not even on. I’m obsessive about noise, though. Knowing my luck, I’d end up with one that ran constantly with a high pitch. |

As I was saying above, Zen 2 uses chiplets containing 2 CCX units sharing I/O, and it shouldn’t need NUMA if you have only one. It’s much closer to an 8-core CPU than 2 4-cores. I don’t know if adding more chiplets still needs NUMA like Zen 1, but probably. |

Yeah, looks like all the chiplets share a memory controller. But each chiplet has its own L3 cache, so core pinning is needed for optimum performance when more than one is used. |

Regarding Christmas in Australia, I always thought it would be weird having it in the middle of summer, but after all the leaves remaining on the trees last year and the record highs this year I am no longer left wondering. I hate it. :-) Climate change sucks. |

Posted by Nicholas Steel A grain of rice is all you need. You probably used 10x the recommended amount. If you want, you can research where the cores are under the heatspreader and put little dots there, but usually a tiny blob in the center is enough. Your heat sink probably smashed it thin enough to work fine, but it might have caused a mess you’ll have to deal with if you change it out. Don’t worry about redoing it right now.
If you had futzed with the HPET configuration before, it will have been reset by the motherboard change. Don’t mess with it. You’ve got a constant-rate TSC now, too. |

The only way the 920 could outperform the 3700x is if the code was targeted to that architecture or it’s doing cpu detection and using a fast path. There’s that cpuid thing with old games only checking the low nibble of the processor generation, too. |

Posted by sureanem Are you blind? 1080p is blurry as hell, and even worse at over 22”. Yeah, let’s just stay at the arbitrary 96 dpi because some nerds got into computers when that was the norm. Sorry, I’ll take my ultra-sharp text and polygon edges over fucking with font antialiasing and filtering trying to make my eyes not hurt. |

Posted by kode54 I can’t remember what I was trying to run, but I know it worked fine for me when I tried that. You just put the .dll files into the .exe directory and the loader picks them up. |

Posted by kode54 Should’ve given Dragon Quest 8 more time. It’s a much better game than FF12. I don’t even understand how you could get lost there; the game guides you fairly directly through the first dungeon. It’s not like it’s DQ7, where it takes 5 hours before you battle anything. |

Posted by kode54 The king and Yangus are the really good ones, but that won’t become apparent until later on. If the accent really bothers you, you can turn the voices off and play it like a classic game. If you’re automatically adverse to the game, though, I won’t force the issue. |

Well, we’re off to a great start with the Iowa caucuses. The minute the results started coming in and were in favor of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, with Biden in 4th place, an “error” happened. How much do we bet that, when the “results” come in, Biden or Buttigieg is on top, with the candidates who actually won in 3rd and 4th. I honestly didn’t think they’d stoop to this, but Trump being around has made everyone into more brazen cheaters. This doesn’t bode well for the U.S. being as it was much longer. |

Posted by kode54 Facts are facts no matter who they come from. Of course Venezuela is a fascist dictatorship pretending to be a socialist democracy, not an actual one, so there’s that. All the countries that have tried “socialism” have failed because those with wealth and power from the previous government, or from rising up to replace it, refused to give it up, which totally undermines the concept of real socialism. |

Posted by CaptainJistuce Well, it’s confirmed community-spread in our area now, and I may have or have had it already. Weird shortness of breath, fatigue, and mild fever—all check. That was a bit shy of a couple weeks ago, but I just assumed it was like a bug I’d had before. Who knows? Testing here is completely inadequate. I wonder how widespread this thing is already. |

My younger brother and his girlfriend went to Chicago a couple weeks ago and caught it (flu-like symptoms and lost sense of taste, still self-quarantining). My older brother's fiancee and kids have fevers (and he did, too, briefly). I've had something weakening for a while and a mild fever. I'm hesitant to go in to get a test, because if it's not coronavirus I could get it then or transmit it, and they're not likely to give me one anyway. Oh well, if I die, I'll let you guys know. I've stopped reading and watching the news. Too many places are doomsaying for the sake of advertising dollars and ease with which they can generate a story. Then there are so many people commenting who are schadenfreudes, trying to make things worse because they think they, themselves, are invincible. This thing has revealed the face of society, and it's not pleasant. |

Posted by tomman Japan is handling it incompetently. Add to that list the UK, Brazil, and any Authoritarian state. That's why it's spread so far. The US *finally* got their act together, but much later than they should have. Hopefully they aren't stupid enough to let up on the restrictions before it's over. (I'm looking at you, Agent Orange) Oh, and I'm feeling better. |

Wow. So spoilers are coming out, and I finally realized that what I thought was a Final Fantasy 7 remake was actually “Final Fantasy 7: Remake”, a new game in the FF7 series of media. Apparently the “remake” part is in reference to the plot, not having to do with redeveloping the original game. I still have no interest in getting it, though. |

Posted by CaptainJistuce But Trump is only trying to make them rich like him. Then they’ll show those poor liberals and non-whites who’s boss. They don’t need to care about any virus. It doesn’t exist. But if it does and they get sick, Trump will help them for sure, right? And Tyson execs can go fuck themselves. Their chicken quality got so poor I stopped buying it years ago. If Tyson goes down the world will be a better place. |
