    Minecraft. Bedrock edition, which I own for Windows 10, care of the mojang account license, iOS, and Android on Google Play. The latter is useful for running it with the MCPELauncher for Lummox. Alas, there’s really no equivalent for macOS yet, until ARMac comes out, then you can just run the iOS tablet version on Mac desktop.

    Super Nazo Puyo: Rulue's Roux

    Turns out that there is more puyo beyond Puyo Puyo. Enter the Nazo Puyo series, where instead of getting your ass served in a plate by non-human Japanese bots playing with friends or being beaten by some unfair AI, you're instead supposed to complete quick puzzles with puyos. Easy in principle, yet the execution is all around, from deceivingly simple puzzles to complete mindbreakers.

    In other words: goddamned puyos!

    You gotta be very creative when solving most of those puzzles: I spent like 30 minutes stuck at a "clear all puyo" puzzle, just to have the answer reveal before my tired eyes: I had to draw a goddamned H pattern with 3x 2-red and 4x 2-yellow puyo in a garbage-filled base pattern! ARGH!

    All of this because Arle wants to eat curry, yet all she knows is how to solve problems with puyos. Flawless plot!. And in the good ol' fashion of Madou Monogatari series of RPG games featuring our puyo-obsessed heroine, you don't get a health bar/indicator - instead, you get to look at Arle's face: the more desperate she gets (oh boy, you just don't make cute RPG protagonists cry!), the nearest you're from a game over. Fortunately, real game overs don't really seem to exist in this game - it tracks your progress with its battery-backed save RAM, and you just get to redo the set of puzzles you missed. Each successfully solved puzzle helps Arle level up, which also helps her stand some more abuse.

    (BTW: that's the only user-translated Nazo Puyo entry out there - there are like 2 SNES and 3 Game Gear titles released only in Japan)

    A few days ago I watched a three-and-a-half-hour not-entirely-serious "review" of DOOM, and it occurred to me that although I'd had copies lying around pretty much ever since I learned it was something my parents wouldn't approve of, I'd never actually *played* the game as intended, without cheats and without just warping to a particular level. So, I did that.

    I played on the easiest difficulty, because I wasn't really taking it seriously, but I still had a good time - there's something satisfying about nimbly dodging an imp fireball even when you aren't in any real danger, and it was fun to explore each map and find secrets based on a few stray lines in the overhead map and a bit of inside knowledge about how DOOM levels work.

    As a follow-up, I went on to play the first episode of Quake under the same conditions. The tech was obviously a lot fancier, but it didn't have the same energy-level. At least part of that was the whole 3D thing - in DOOM, the level is confined to a flat plane, so you can always make sense of it by switching to the overhead map and thinking about it. Quake is fully 3D and has no map, so levels curl around themselves like geometric fever-dreams and there's no real point trying to engage with them because they're mostly just "lookit this neat architectural moment" anyway.

    I also wonder how much of that comes from the popularity of deathmatch, too - sure, there were a lot of DOOM maps designed to be playable as point-to-point single-player levels and as multi-player arenas, but Quake was designed when that was already a popular thing, while DOOM invented the idea and so it wasn't as prominent.

    I'm currently 27 hours into Horizon Zero Dawn. The graphics are amazing, but my GTX 970 gets only 30-40 fps at reduced settings. Hope to get a RTX 3070 or 3080 soon; or the AMD equivalent if they have raytracing and the drivers are good.

    My current setup: Super Famicom ("2/1/3" SNS-CPU-1CHIP-02) → SCART → OSSC → StarTech USB3HDCAP → AmaRecTV 3.10

    At least I'm glad to know that they no longer restrict the installation on mobile GPUs.

    Protip: if you're thinking about adding Koopa the Quick to any star, STOP.
    Most ROMhackers believe that coming up with impossible routes and a turtle with more steroids than your average sportsball player is their idea of "fun" and "challenge". This is why I had to drop BroDute's Star Revenge 7, an otherwise fine, well-balanced hack: to get the final special cap switch (which you need for the final Bowser battle or something), you have to beat a (IMHO) ridiculously hard race against Koopa The Steroids Quick, on a course full of bottomless pits, sharp turns, lots of hills, lava pits, quicksand, and even water.

    Seriously, fuck KtQ.

    I've not had any issues with them for several years. Others swear they've had nothing BUT issues.

    I do know the drivers for the RX5000 series were, ummm, extremely fucked, at and shortly after launch. Don't know if they ever got better.
    But it seems an isolated incident to me.

    Yeah, I received a 5700xt for Christmas last year, and I had to help reproducing a couple issues I had with the drivers. I think they’re in a good state now, though. I went through a couple Windows games without any problems.

    Polaris cards show fewer complaints, but I’m not having any more trouble with Navi other than those driver nits.

    Horizon Zero Dawn is an amazing game, enjoy it! It looks pretty awesome on a PS4 Pro with a HDR TV.

    Yes, but I don't think it'll widely available in time (given the non-availability of the current versions) for me as now I don't want to play HZD and especially CP2077 at low settings by that time. I didn't realize until recently that AMD's big date of October 28th is just the unveiling and not the launch date, so who knows if AMD will be an option. And RX 5700 XT seems to get 'only' 60fps on average (RTX 3080 gets 100fps at 1440p), a bit low for a card that I want to keep for at least the next 5 years.

    It is! I took the time to write down and organize the outfits, ammunition and weapons that are available to me now, so that I know which beasts to hunt to craft the best equipment. My skills are still kind of all over the place, and I'm still quite scared of the big beasts. They certainly drain my medicine pouch. Navigating the traps and potions list is also difficult (I'm playing on mouse+keyboard). But hopefully I'll get better.

    Still playing Fall Guys daily, awaiting tomorrow's unveiling of Season 2.

    Considering getting Among Us. I hear it's going to get the Easy AntiCheat treatment too, so yet another anti-Linux title to my roster.

    I bought, and played the crap out of, the Panzer Dragoon remake on Steam.
    As of right now, the "start the game" achievement has an over 99% acquisition rate. That's... really weird for a Steam title. THE HYPE IS REAL.


    The remake seems to have been based on the japanese version of the original(Panzer Dragoon was toughened up significantly for the initial US release, as was common in the day). All three available difficulty options are SUPER easy, and a one-life clear on hard mode is a cakewalk. The game is very pretty, but has little meat to it.
    And like the Saturn, Windows, and XBox versions, special features are unlocked per-play through the use of cheat codes on the title screen, which is... a misguided turn down Nostalgia Boulevard.
    There was a significant frame-pacing issue, with the game locking itself to 59 FPS. Combined with the lack of a VSync option, that resulted in very frequent tearing. That has been patched now, the game hits 60 like it is supposed to and supports VSync. (No option to reduce the frame rate to 20 "for the nostalgiaz")

    I wish the game took after the PS2 port of the original and included a menu to toggle all the various bonus features on and off. Also the PS2 version included all six difficulty options(three japanese and three american).

    DOOM.

    Yes, the original "doomy dooms of doomed doom", in all its 320x200x8bit blocky glory.

    First on my good ole' 386SX-40 (Real Hardware™ FTW!). It runs like ass, but it's still quite playable (what it hurts the most is not the anemic CPU, but the severe lack of RAM as my SX only has 6 megs of it, and since my DOS-fu never was strong, it implies running on Win95 which means "Welcome to Thrash City". I'm quite surprised modern PATA drives still talk CHS, but not SATA drives behind a bridge!), and thanks to my legit AWE32, it sounds glorious... even on headphones.

    Then, on a computer made nearly 20 years later, using Chocolate Doom (I just picked a source port at random from the Debian repos: it has that one, PrBoom, and Doomsday. Hell, they even have a source port for Doom 3!). Smooth silky fluidness, but the emulated OPL music sounds... subpar. Hooray for the death of MIDI synthesizers :/

    Even if you hate FPS games (like I do), you can still have some fun with classics - a bit of blocky carnage really hits the spot every few years (the chainsaw is fueled by raw fun!), to be fair. In 1993, parents were concerned due to the realistic gore depicted on Doom. Nowadays, it looks like pixel art stuff that millenials would disdain as "oooooooooooold WHERE IS MY RTX!!!!".

    I'm still afraid of Barons of Hell :(

    Kinda surprised there's not a "render the entire game using RTX ray-tracing" version of Doom yet. Be way cooler than Quake II.

    Meh, I've enjoyed Commander Keen more than DOOM / Quake / anything else from id. Even the newest games come across as being designed by blood-and-violence-obsessed highschoolers à la Genecyst. The most fun I had with Doom was Korone's streams.

    As for blocky 3D renderers, I'd recommend Descent 1 & 2 instead.
