Why not just use the standard "Various Artists"? So you get /music/Various Artists/Compilation album/. For obscure Japanese stuff, you could have transcribed it, although it doesn't make a difference now. There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. You believed that you had actually held it in your hands. It was a photograph something like this. |

Posted by sureanem Why not just use a NON-BROKEN PLAYER? This isn't rocket science, people. Motorola got this right in late 2005 (!!!!) when they came up with the E816 (on which they debuted their "enhanced" MP3 player applet for its CDMA phones). FOURTEEN YEARS AGO. RIM also didn't played stupid games - the year was 2010 when the original version of the BB Torch 9800 got released, and that was the one I tested. Apple needs not to apply, as you're forced to interact with iTunes anyway (and given its humble iPod origins, most likely they managed to get this right too). Seriously guys, nobody should care about how the files are organized in your memory card. I'm not playing files, I'm playing SONGS - the files are just a protocol to get sounds into your phone's CPU/DSPs so you can listen to them. Why, oh why the Android ecosystem has to FAIL so hard at such as simple task? UPDATE: I gave a try to MortPlayer, as I'm at home and therefore protected by my adblocking solution. It insists into navigating my music as FILES, not by album/artist/etc. Uninstalling it now. Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

I have to vehemently disagree with you. Fuck tags, they make everything complicated and weird. Artists have albums have songs. Songs go in albums filed under their artists. A simple hierarchical directory structure. Album art goes in cover.jpg, not embedded into the bloody files. The files should be unchanged after ripping/encoding to preserve the hash. Personally, I solve it as such: I don't listen to music on my phone. If I want to hear a song for whatever reason, I type it into the Google and hit the first youtube link, problem solved. For some more obscure stuff, I have it in my torrents folder sorted by the name of the torrent. So to play it, I type in . But generally, I just don't listen to music.Have you tried VLC though? That should do the trick. They have an Android app too. There was a certain photograph about which you had a hallucination. You believed that you had actually held it in your hands. It was a photograph something like this. |

The ideal album organization is obviously how TLMC does things where you have tagless files representing entire albums as a single waveform and then all the metadata is specified in a single cue file. |

>It insists into navigating my music as FILES, not by album/artist/etc. In my experience, if you're doing anything other than passively consuming perfectly tagged content, displaying the file names I pick is good, and relying on metadata is dumb. Dolphin Emulator displays each game's "internal name". For Wii games, it actually shows the save file name if the game has created one already. It doesn't show the ISO file name or path (unsure if changed recently). This is useless when I have 3 edited Mario Kart Wii ISOs with the same game name and save file name. But if I change the game ID to distinguish the files, then all edited game files have no save progress, locking me out of half the "track slots" and karts and characters. The solution to my self-made problem is downloading a questionably 100% save file and spending extra time importing it. I've worked with audio MIDI editing, SPC creation, SPC game rips, etc. - foobar2000 defaults to displaying Artist/album (? - ?), Track no (), Title / track artist (filename without extension), and duration (1:00). - The file name, extension (or format), and file size (all important) are not shown by default. - I recall having several files, converted from each other, and only distinguished by extension. |

At least it's just the default. I recall having a playlist full of tracker songs and showing the file name and internal name for just that playlist, instead of artist, track #, and album. Is foobar still that nice or did they fuck it up? |

Posted by tomman You can opt out of ads. The setting is in the "Track and folder lists" menu for some reason. I thought I had turned them off since I hadn't seen any in as long as I can remember but maybe they are already broken so nothing to worry about? Also, it was last updated 6 years ago: does it even work with Android 7+? Yes it does. My LG V30 is running Android 8.0.0. |

foobar2000 for android is very nice. you can browse the internal storage as well, so you can use your folders instead of tags. also, direct link to the apk |

Wow, can't believe I'm the only guy that actually uses (and relies on) tags as intended :/ VLC does the exact same shit: it fails to group by album. (I still installed VLC because I need a video player and won't be using MX Player - never used VLC for music in any of its incarnations) Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

Posted by tomman I'm using a music player from F-Droid called.. Odyssey, I think? Yeah, it's all "material design", but I think it was the first I found that correctly sorted my albums by disc number then track number, so it wouldn't play disc 1 track 1 immediately followed by disc 2 track 1. I think it does assume the pop-music artist/album/track hierarchy, though. :/ - Simple Gallery Pro: The non-Pro version is at Google Play, but it has been superseded by the Pro version... which is payware there! But on F-Droid it's free and open source software, go figure. Barebones, just as it should be - simple but not to the point of being extremely dumbed down like the average application nowadays. Aside of not being able to setup wallpapers for the lock screen, it does its work and nothing more. I'm using that too, I think (it just calls itself "Gallery" in the app list and doesn't mention the full name on the About dialog, but it's one of the Simple series of apps). It lets me browse my media files without having to hunt through the filesystem, but allows me to exclude album art from my music folder. I also replaced the stock Android camera app with "Open Camera" on F-Droid. It does all the magic gubbins so that the "camera" icon on the lock screen starts it up, and the "gallery" button in Open Camera correctly opens Simple Gallery. I'm quite pleased with the combination. I've come across a few apps that are paid in the Google Store, but free for F-Droid users. I guess the app authors figure F-Droid users are more likely to submit bugfixes or at least well-written bug reports in lieu of cash. Either way, I'm not complaining.
I'm using Termux for this. It's actually a good deal more powerful than just an SSH client - it's a full Debianised userland running on the Android kernel, so you can run bash and Vim and whatever on your phone... but in practice, I just have the "Termux:widget" add-on installed, so I have a button on my home screen that automatically connects to my home server via SSH and Mosh, and does "tmux attach" so I can read my email and check out IRC and everything else on the go. I'm also quite fond of SyncThing - install on your phone (it's in F-Droid!) and your home PC (it's in Debian!) and once they're connected, every time you change a file on one it'll be copied to the other via WiFi or whatever. Beats the heck out of digging out a USB cable to get the photos off your phone, or get music on. Another tool I've started using is Orgzly. It's a bit over-complicated and clunky for a TODO list manager, but the lovely thing is that instead of storing your TODO items in an internal database or trying to sync them to your Google Calendar, it stores them in perfectly readable plain-text (specifically, in the format used by the popular org-mode plugin for Emacs). Even better, it can be configured to save the file to a directory managed by SyncThing, so if something happens to my phone, all my notes are backed up and readable without special software. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI. |

Have you tried setting the Album Artist tag on the songs to "Various Artists"? It clues in some players to group songs as part of a single album. |

Installed foobar2000. UI is nice. Pulling the same "all your 13 tracks on $COMPILATION are singles" shit is tiring. So nope, Bop it is. I'm forced to endure suck, but I'll always pick the grade of suck that actually doesn't push ALL of my berserk buttons at a time. > Have you tried setting the Album Artist tag on the songs to "Various Artists"? It clues in some players to group songs as part of a single album. I guess that's a flaw on my tagging process. But given the messy status of my file layout on that SD card, it's quite late to go back and fix that, not with a serious media collection reorganization. Either that or start over, and lose a 10+ year collection. My options at this stage: 1) Keep searching for a non-braindamaged player that actually can tell apart between "this is a compilation" and "this is a legit single" without forcing me to reorganize my music. This now means jumping into the sewer pit known as Google Play. 2) Reorganize every single file on my SD card to please those newfangled media players that insist into "you're playing files, not songs" metaphors. There are tools/scripts for that, it's just matter to find one (if you know one that works under Linux, I'm willing to try it!) 3) Give up about all prospects of using this crippled hand computer as a music player, and hope my last remaining RAZR (the VE20, which actually works fine if a bit sluggish at times because noone was expecting a 32GB media collection on a cellphone in 2008) doesn't break for good. players aren't really braindead tho, the id3 tags always was made with artist reading for album artist -an album being the work of a singular artist, and id3v1 never had any provision for compilations or classical albums - you got classical albums with the composer as artist, or the problem you have here(and major publisher's catalogues weren't any better). the correct way to add trackartist tag, set to what is the artist on the track, then set artist(or album artist) to something like Various Artists, or Assorted Artists. assuming your collection is largely MP3, that would mean setting your tags to something other than id3v1, however(. Good tool do that with? foobar2000 for windows. |

I've been using EasyTAG under Linux since... what, 2011? Dunno what tag format does default to, need to check that. But before fixing tags and whatever, I first need to sort out the file layout disaster first. Right now my collection is sorted this way: /Artist/trackname.mp3 But then, to please media players, I need to achieve this: /Album/trackname.mp3 (From that point on, it should not be difficult to achieve /Album Artist/Album/trackname.mp3 once fixing tags) Can foobar2000 rename my files that way? Or is there another suitable tool I could reliably use for that? Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

yes. you can use tags directly in file paths for rename/move/copy operations. you'd need to install the masstagger component, from there you can do some scripting with it. but all you need to do is set album artist to various and foobar mobile won't break it up under albums. |

Achieved the same result with EasyTAG - I forgot that this one could also rename files (it even found a duplicate track - oh, my!). All tracks are nicely sorted in one directory per album (with a few loose tracks from dubious origins) Now the ZTE player correctly enumerates my albums: not as a bunch of loose singles, but as compilations! Of course this won't fool foobar2000, as I need to properly tag my stuff per album artist, but one step at a time! Also: beware if you do this, as after rearranging my tracks, Bop started crashing at startup! The solution was to clear app data and start over. Music woes more or less solved after the switch to album directories (foobar2000 still complains, but meh, I'm not using it anyway). Now: tethering! Long short story: American Telephone & Telegraph is greedy as fuck, and this extends to every single handset sold by them. Tethering is tightly locked on my unlocked phone. Unfortunately I now need to use it because CANTV has been shitting its undies harder than hard this week (having Internet access for like HALF AN HOUR PER DAY is, like, communism), but the phone tries to ask permission from AT&T every single time I try to enable tethering. Since none of the T's in AT&T is for "Telefonica Movistar" (yet), it fails. I've studied several options, none of then useful: - Root the phone, so I can either modify build.prop or use a Magisk module to disable provisioning (net.tethering.noprovisioning=true). I've explained why I'm not pursuing that avenue on the Z835 (cannot afford the risk to erase my IMEI) - FoxFi (now part of PDANet): Payware. The free version limits your connection time. NO THANKS. - Tethr, which exploits an Android vulnerability to fool the phone to skip provisioning by cycling the modem radio off and on. Although my phone runs one of the oldest ROM versions for the Z835 (V1.0.0B13, from late '17), looks like it isn't vulnerable. Bummer :/ - Tether_entitlement_check_state: only works with LG phones so far (the pref does nothing and doesn't even exist on non-LG ROMs) - Flash a unbranded/generic ROM: Nobody cares about cheap Android phones, including the ZTE Maven family :/ Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |

If you didn't know, ADB stands for Android Debug Bridge, and it's intended as a debugging interface (over USB), but you can also implement application specific stuff (like highly detailed performance monitoring). That functionality can be used to tether probably by sending packets to an app/service, then having the service pass it on to the android networking stack. EDIT: Typos squashed. Also forgot to mention it's USB based because I need more sleep. |
