Hence, the ridiculous "IT WON'T FIIIIIT!" complaints from many people.

My Sega Genesis was all the time on the floor, aside of the TV on the same table, or over a cardboard box, not inside an impossibly small cubbyhole (plus, only the original NES was a frontloader among all the cart-based consoles). Expecting POWER to fit on tiny TINY boxes is unrealistic, but I guess we're living in stupid times.

And now, better late than never, iFixit's official PS5 teardown

    - Texas called, they want their truck back! Oh man, this thing is HUGE, basically, the biggest videogame console ever.
    - The fan is BIG, but very user serviceable, as long as you don't mind the security Torx screw heads. Still, I'm not feeling comfortable getting a vacuum cleaner near this thing (static electricity and all), but you're supposed to dust off the exhausts every now and then.
    - The massive fan obviously cools down an equally hefty heatsink.
    - The user-accessible M.2 NVMe slot supports all form factors between 30mm and 110mm, which are basically every commercially available M.2 stick, as long as it complies with Sony performance specs (the standard does allow for 16mm and 26mm cards, but apparently nobody is making SSDs that small yet). For reference, the PCIe 4.0 SSD from the Xbox Sex is a 2230, so 30mm. Now the sicko in me wants to see someone "shucking" a Xbox for its SSD, and then installing it on a PS5. Oh wait, the slot is right now useless as Sony has yet to release the required firmware update for enabling its use!
    - Liquid metal is no joke. You definitely don't want to mess with it as it can quickly kill your console if you splash it carelessly.
    - Unlike the XSX, the PS5 comes with a CR2032 3V battery holder installed.
    - It also has a tiny speaker inside, most likely for screaming at you when your console dies.
    - The onboard (soldered) SSD has its own dedicated 512MB RAM cache.
    - The disc drive (if your console ships with one) is still married to the motherboard, sadly. No surprises there.

So basically this round of the console wars boils down to: Liquid Metal vs. Vapor Chamber. FIGHT!

You forgot to mention the PS5's cooling setup doesn't cool all of the memory chips. There's at least one along the bottom with no heatsink and very little if any airflow over it. It basically operates at maximum acceptable temperature the entire time you're gaming >.>" there's also apparently not very much in the way of cooling for the user accessible NVMe compartment.

    - The AMD SoC clearly says "PROJECT SCARLETT" on the die laser engraving marks, instead of just "Microsoft Xbox". Cute.

    UwU

I know someone with the new Xbox and they're running RetroArch's PS2 and Wii cores on it since they paid for the developer mode thingy lol. She said PS5 is the worse of the two this generation, and given Sony's current attitude... I don't blame them. Never forget how Sony UK responded to a Gran Turismo event a few years ago: "who the fuck would play this, the graphics are shit!" or something like that, he was quoted as saying...

/offtopic: change 'it' for the J2ME Sonic 1 port, 'entertainment unit' for GBA, and 'airflow' for 'the hardware' and you basically get Sonic Genesis GBA not gonna lie lmao

This is something Microsoft did right, yet Sony and Nintendo fail to get: the whole "every retail console can be turned into a devkit". Best of all, it's available to mere mortals like us, no need to have a "secured business office" or a "established publishing deal". Pay ~$20 only once, done, your Xbone/SeX can now run emulators, media players, and random homebrews downloaded from somewhere, LEGALLY. No need to mess with the cat-and-mouse game of version-specific exploits, or risk bricking your console. Just pay and go.

The only thing I don't like is that (aside of DRM and having to pay) you need to be online to let the mothership to check your privileges, but other than that, this is a nice way to keep everybody happy. Well, everybody but pirates. Microsoft seems to have done their homework: while Steam-like sales craze are still not commonplace on consoles, Xbox has cheap games, and the whole Xbox Game Pass where you can literally rent hundreds of games for a flat rate. If you still want to pirate Xbox games, either you're a PokéRAWMz kiddo (in that case, knock it out!), one of those "stick it to the man!" twits (what are you doing playing DRM'd stuff?!), or live in a shithole like Soviet Venezuela or Best Korea (and if that's you, chances are you can't afford even a used original Xbox from 2001, much less a Xbone/SeX anyway).

As much as I dislike Microsoft, this is one of the many good things the new (Satya Nutella's) MS has done.

Contrast with Sony or Nintendo, where they're too busy deploying the Sony Police Department to silence hackers. Or even worse: the Nintendo Ninjas are real, and in many ways, they're even more dangerous than the Sony cops! (seriously: hiring a freakin' P.I. to stalk 3DS hackers in Europe!? This shit should be extremely illegal, but alas, we don't live in a ideal world)

The Nintendo Ninjas have been real since the 1990s - remember UltraHLE and how the two developers were basically forced to abandon their identities by Nintendo's pervasive bullying or pay a massive sum in court?

The "IT WONT FIIIIIIT!!!" concerns from gamers regarding the next-gen consoles are so real that furniture shops are now taking action:

The PS5 is absolutely the Humvee of consoles. But the NeXTbox Xbox SeX is not exactly tiny either.
This also explains one of the many reasons of why the Sony is not focusing on distributing many PS5s in their homeland of California Japan, where the new console is having its worst launch ever for a PlayStation.

Nintendo officially reveals the highly rumored Switch Pro OLED model:
    https://gbatemp.net/threads/nintendo-officially-reveals-the-oled-model-nintendo-switch-console.590943/
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mHq6Y7JSmg

$349,99. Oh, you DO live at Eurozone? That will be 349,99€ for you then!

Your extra $20 over the base model gets:
    - A slightly bigger OLED display (7")
    - An Ethernet jack on the dock
    - Twice the internal storage (64GB!)
    - The very same old dated Tegra chip, and the same amount of RAM

The original Switch and Switch Lite models will still be offered for sale along the "Switch (OLED model)" (official name).

While teraflops fanboys scream NINTEND00000MEDZ for the eleventy billionth time ("Just get a PS5/XSX, people!!!!"), Nintendo officially extended its License To Print Money™. You want one (or three), don't lie yourself.

And two of the first three things are irrelevant to people that don't use the device docked.
(Also, from what I've heard the new dock works with the old tablet, so... buy a dock for your integrated ethernet adapter and save a couple hundred bucks, I guess?)

And here is the true Switch killer, by none other but Valve!

    Steam Deck

    - 15W Zen 2/RDNA 2 APU
    - 16GB DDR4 RAM
    - 64GB eMMC or 256/512GB NVMe SSD, plus UHS microSD slot on all models
    - 7" LCD (not OLED) touchscreen
    - Built-in controller, including gyroscope and dual trackpads
    - It Runs Linux® - actually Arch-powered SteamOS 3.0 with Plasma, and Proton for those pesky AAA+++ Wintendo games (Yes, you can wipe Linux and install Windows, but WHY?!)
    - A lone USB-C port which also offers DisplayPort output
    - IT HAS A HEADPHONE JACK!
    - Starting at $399 for the base 64GB model, up to $649 for the top-of-the-line 512GB model with antiglare glass and carrying case

Shipping starting December 2021 in select countries. No, you can't just preorder one yet. Instead, there is a reservation quota for each of the initially supported regions - you give some money to Valve, and when the time comes, they'll actually let preorder yours. Of course, that's totally to prevent scalpers.

My predictions: It will flop, because it's Valve. Just like Steam Machines and the Gabenpad. Also, I wonder why they ditched Debian for Arch...

    OBTW, I run ArchSteamOS!

A bit excited for this, since it might improve Proton to 99.9999% compatibility now! Other than that, slightly compelled but since I run very few games these days, I'll probably pass it up. Life catches up to me! :D

As another proof that Square Enix hates you, dear gamer, Kingdom Hearts games will come to the Switch... streaming only.

    https://gbatemp.net/threads/the-kingdom-hearts-games-are-headed-to-the-nintendo-switch-through-cloud-streaming.600860/
    https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2021-10-06/kingdom-hearts-games-head-to-switch-as-cloud-streaming-releases/.178187

Because in this New Normal™, we don't port OLD PlayStation games (much less bloaty games made on bloaty PC-first engines) to underpowered hardware anymore - we just sell the rights to stream them to poor suckers... on a Nintendo Switch, whose biggest selling point is "can work in places without Internet, like trains, airplanes, and cars".

The Gaben's Switch Killer Steam Deck is here!

...and iFixit got the nudes, as usual:

    - Love the "VALVE POWERED BY AMD" engraved on the APU - Valve actually splurged the extra monies for custom silicon and not just a run-off-the-mill Ryzen APU.

    - The SSD is a M.2 2230, the same format as on the Xbox SeX.

    - Battery replacements look very painful, following the Way of Apple®. No quick-release tabs, loads of strong adhesive, and a L-shaped battery means that when your 90-minute autonomy (as reported by some folks that pushed the pedal to the metal on the Deck) drops all the way down to zero, you're in for a rather rude awakening. WHY VALVE WHY!?

    - Yes, there is a fan inside.

    - Since Valve got the memo that noone makes good consumer-spec thumbsticks anymore and drift is here to stay, they actually made the sticks easier to replace. Oh, they can also sense if your finger is over them or not.

    - Valve tells that you should not crack open your console, ever, or it will weaken its drop resistance. Nice try, folks.

OT: I hate that iFixit has now pretty much switched to video format for teardowns. I guess kids these days are too dumb to read words with pretty static pictures. Sorry people, but I'm NOT watching a goddamned video!!!

    PAL Moment.
The same bullshit happens in the UK too.

We still get shafted with release dates when it comes to weeb stuff too, unlike USA/Canada. Not that anyone cares where I am, or even really seems to know about it: majority of people I've spoke to my age don't even know about the constant maltreatment of the PAL region by both US and Japanese companies.

Of course, the only country in Europe that they like to give special treatment to is France.

(Anyone checked out the upcoming Neptunia game, "Sisters vs Sisters", a sequel to Mk2?)
