    Thread review
tomman The "IT WONT FIIIIIIT!!!" concerns from gamers regarding the next-gen consoles are so real that furniture shops are now taking action:

The PS5 is absolutely the Humvee of consoles. But the NeXTbox Xbox SeX is not exactly tiny either.
This also explains one of the many reasons of why the Sony is not focusing on distributing many PS5s in their homeland of California Japan, where the new console is having its worst launch ever for a PlayStation.
Mei Koyoki The Nintendo Ninjas have been real since the 1990s - remember UltraHLE and how the two developers were basically forced to abandon their identities by Nintendo's pervasive bullying or pay a massive sum in court?

I know someone with the new Xbox and they're running RetroArch's PS2 and Wii cores on it since they paid for the developer mode thingy lol. She said PS5 is the worse of the two this generation, and given Sony's current attitude... I don't blame them. Never forget how Sony UK responded to a Gran Turismo event a few years ago: "who the fuck would play this, the graphics are shit!" or something like that, he was quoted as saying...

This is something Microsoft did right, yet Sony and Nintendo fail to get: the whole "every retail console can be turned into a devkit". Best of all, it's available to mere mortals like us, no need to have a "secured business office" or a "established publishing deal". Pay ~$20 only once, done, your Xbone/SeX can now run emulators, media players, and random homebrews downloaded from somewhere, LEGALLY. No need to mess with the cat-and-mouse game of version-specific exploits, or risk bricking your console. Just pay and go.

The only thing I don't like is that (aside of DRM and having to pay) you need to be online to let the mothership to check your privileges, but other than that, this is a nice way to keep everybody happy. Well, everybody but pirates. Microsoft seems to have done their homework: while Steam-like sales craze are still not commonplace on consoles, Xbox has cheap games, and the whole Xbox Game Pass where you can literally rent hundreds of games for a flat rate. If you still want to pirate Xbox games, either you're a PokéRAWMz kiddo (in that case, knock it out!), one of those "stick it to the man!" twits (what are you doing playing DRM'd stuff?!), or live in a shithole like Soviet Venezuela or Best Korea (and if that's you, chances are you can't afford even a used original Xbox from 2001, much less a Xbone/SeX anyway).

As much as I dislike Microsoft, this is one of the many good things the new (Satya Nutella's) MS has done.

Contrast with Sony or Nintendo, where they're too busy deploying the Sony Police Department to silence hackers. Or even worse: the Nintendo Ninjas are real, and in many ways, they're even more dangerous than the Sony cops! (seriously: hiring a freakin' P.I. to stalk 3DS hackers in Europe!? This shit should be extremely illegal, but alas, we don't live in a ideal world)

    - The AMD SoC clearly says "PROJECT SCARLETT" on the die laser engraving marks, instead of just "Microsoft Xbox". Cute.

Im guessing they shoved it into their entertainment units with no regard for airflow.

/offtopic: change 'it' for the J2ME Sonic 1 port, 'entertainment unit' for GBA, and 'airflow' for 'the hardware' and you basically get Sonic Genesis GBA not gonna lie lmao
Nicholas Steel You forgot to mention the PS5's cooling setup doesn't cool all of the memory chips. There's at least one along the bottom with no heatsink and very little if any airflow over it. It basically operates at maximum acceptable temperature the entire time you're gaming >.>" there's also apparently not very much in the way of cooling for the user accessible NVMe compartment.

    > Tsukihime remake is real
    > no Sacchin route
...and Nasu just ruined 2021 for all of us :/
tomman And now, better late than never, iFixit's official PS5 teardown

    - Texas called, they want their truck back! Oh man, this thing is HUGE, basically, the biggest videogame console ever.
    - The fan is BIG, but very user serviceable, as long as you don't mind the security Torx screw heads. Still, I'm not feeling comfortable getting a vacuum cleaner near this thing (static electricity and all), but you're supposed to dust off the exhausts every now and then.
    - The massive fan obviously cools down an equally hefty heatsink.
    - The user-accessible M.2 NVMe slot supports all form factors between 30mm and 110mm, which are basically every commercially available M.2 stick, as long as it complies with Sony performance specs (the standard does allow for 16mm and 26mm cards, but apparently nobody is making SSDs that small yet). For reference, the PCIe 4.0 SSD from the Xbox Sex is a 2230, so 30mm. Now the sicko in me wants to see someone "shucking" a Xbox for its SSD, and then installing it on a PS5. Oh wait, the slot is right now useless as Sony has yet to release the required firmware update for enabling its use!
    - Liquid metal is no joke. You definitely don't want to mess with it as it can quickly kill your console if you splash it carelessly.
    - Unlike the XSX, the PS5 comes with a CR2032 3V battery holder installed.
    - It also has a tiny speaker inside, most likely for screaming at you when your console dies.
    - The onboard (soldered) SSD has its own dedicated 512MB RAM cache.
    - The disc drive (if your console ships with one) is still married to the motherboard, sadly. No surprises there.

So basically this round of the console wars boils down to: Liquid Metal vs. Vapor Chamber. FIGHT!
kode54 Probably the same people who blew vape smoke through their series x so they could film it "smoking".
tomman Hence, the ridiculous "IT WON'T FIIIIIT!" complaints from many people.

My Sega Genesis was all the time on the floor, aside of the TV on the same table, or over a cardboard box, not inside an impossibly small cubbyhole (plus, only the original NES was a frontloader among all the cart-based consoles). Expecting POWER to fit on tiny TINY boxes is unrealistic, but I guess we're living in stupid times.
funkyass Im guessing they shoved it into their entertainment units with no regard for airflow.

The next console generation has just arrived, COVID or not!

First on iFixit's trusty dismantling table: the neXtcube Xbox Sex

    Highlights:

    - Overkill is the name of the game. The cooling game, that is! Looks like both Sony and MS are playing it safe to prevent another wave of overheating-related RMAs.
    - Look at that bigass 130mm single fan! (made by Delta, which is "God-tier" on the PSU enthusiast arena) It's also surprisingly serviceable - you just have to void your warranty to do so. BOO!

And yet I've seen people anecdotally claim they've seen a message that their Xbox Series/PS 5 console needs to be turned off for a while to cool. So either they effed something up, those people installed their consoles in a sealed container for some stupid reason or the manufacturers need to mess with fan profiles in the firmware.

    - VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRY unusual PCB sandwich! Heatsink->PCB->"center chassis" (aka more heatsinking)->PCB->shield->PSU, all held together with a cute black rubber band.
    - MS actually reused many Xbone components on the Sex... including (in a first) the optical drive, the very same PLDS DG-6M5S featured on the previous generation. Most likely they did that because 1) nobody else is making optical drives these days other than PLDS (Phillips/Lite-On) and HLDS (Hitachi/LG), 2) it remains unhacked as of today, and 3) it lets them save money. If your ODD breaks, you should be able to use Xbone replacement-- oh wait, we forgot that those drives are married to the motherboard, and since their security is still broken, you need to perform PCB swaps on those (which sadly involve soldering, and if the reason your drive died is the PCB, you're fucked)
    - The internal SSD is -surprisingly- a (mostly?) vanilla SanDisk WD M.2 NVMe SSD. Well, WD says it's a custom high performance design for MS, but the iFixit folks tested it on a external NVMe enclosure and their Mac listed several NTFS partitions. In theory this means the internal SSD is replaceable should it fail or want to upgrade, but in practice, expect software hurdles (and some lame DRM) for that. This also implies that they could just been as nice as Sony and just expose the whole M.2 slot to the user -no warranty-voiding actions needed!- instead of going the money-gouging route with their custom SSD expansion modules. Double BOO!
    - The controller is basically the same as the Xbone controller, but with an extra "Share" button and a redesigned D-pad (do Xbox D-pads still suck?)
    - The AMD SoC clearly says "PROJECT SCARLETT" on the die laser engraving marks, instead of just "Microsoft Xbox". Cute.
    - There are solder points for a CR2032 battery holder, but no battery is supplied with the console. Does it means that would I need to reset the clock every time there is a power outage or the console is left unplugged for more than a few minutes?!
    - The internal PSU case looks like a car ECU :D

More time for me to see how the graphics card market develops.

Yes, Sony overengineered to hell and back the cooling system, but if this means less RMAs, and dead silent, ice-cold gaming sessions, who cares if this thing is bigger than your... head?

Damn straight. You don't buy a console to look at. What will reviewers come up with next?--it doesn't have a display with a notch, so it's not as good as an iphone? A huge fan means less noise, and I'm all for it.

Still, it beats the Xbox Sex proprietary SSDs (because MS had to screw up user-friendly storage expansion options, AGAIN).

Yeah, they had an opportunity to be seen as more flexible but blew it, revealing their one and only supported proprietary expansion.
    tomman Official PS5 teardown

Oh my, that thing is HUGE! It's the Texas Pick-up Truck of consoles... yet all that size is basically 70% fancooler, 30% console.

Yes, Sony overengineered to hell and back the cooling system, but if this means less RMAs, and dead silent, ice-cold gaming sessions, who cares if this thing is bigger than your... head? Apparently overheating was a common problem with PS4s (and certain non-Sony consoles *cough*RRoD*cough*), so Sony is trying to play it safe with this one. Also: liquid metal, AND they want YOU, dear gamer, to clean your fancooler regularly (warranty NOT voided!), just like your aircon filters - you DO clean them, riiiiiight? Unfortunately, all I've heard are nerds complaining that this console is bigger than their waifus, it won't fit, and even some Hackernews iDiot™ moaning because it isn't THIIIIIIIIIIIIIN so he can hang it behind his THIIIIIIIIIIIIIN TV. If you really hate first-gen hardware that much, wait 2-3 years for the Slim version then.

The ultrafast SSD is soldered, which means that if any of those Flash memory ICs dies, so does your console. You still get a M.2 expansion slot, but you need to ensure that the SSD you're going to purchase is as good or better than the already high-tier PS5 built-in (which as of this post date means that you don't have many expansion options currently in the market, and you're fishing at the upper end of the product spectrum if numbers are to believe). Still, it beats the Xbox Sex proprietary SSDs (because MS had to screw up user-friendly storage expansion options, AGAIN).

For those keeping the score at home, Sony already did an official PS4 teardown near launch. Still, nothing it's really official until iFixit does theirs :)
Nicholas Steel Hopefully they don't assign Zenimax/Bethesda staff to QA for Microsoft Windows. We'd prolly get a significant increase in the number of problems with Windows.
CaptainJistuce I thought you said they bought Bethesda for $7.58 at first, and I spent far more time than I should've trying to figure out how that even worked.

So... does this mean Bethesda games have betatesters now?
*looks at the Windows 10 update track record*
    NEVER MIND.
tomman In this year of "megacorp purchases that might hurt you", Micro-Soft just bought the guys that makes a few games you might have player on all sorts of devices... including those ones NOT made by Micro-Soft:
    https://bethesda.net/en/article/1iLtcvwY6Nb1GeKADyDUEX/why-microsoft-is-the-perfect-fit

$7.5B, holy shit. Barely worth more than some Instagranola!

Needless to say, the community is divided: for people on Windows PCs, it's business as usual. For Xboxers, these are great times to own a Xbox in any of its flavors. For Sonyers, it's the Apocalypse Now indeed. And for the few guys buying Nintendo consoles for playing non-Nintendo games, all I've heard so far is a big, collective "meh".

Where are the antimonopoly regulators!? Ah yeah, staying at home until the China Pest™ goes away...

    $299S, $499X, November 10.
tomman Sega finally figured out how to sell puyos to westerners: by addinng tetrominoes.

There were doubts with the formula on the original Puyo Puyo Tetris when it was launched overseas ~4 years ago, but aside of the kinda limited platform selection (no 3DS, no Xbone, PC got the Denuvo disease*), it seems the bet paid off handsomely. Not only we got Puyo Puyo eSports Champions over here (even on PC!), Sega has just announced there will be a Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 later this year.

Yes, looks like it will be a global launch, in what it seems to be a first for the puyos.
It will be available for all current and next-gen consoles, this time including Xboxes.
And yes, THERE WILL BE A PC VERSION ON STEAM!

*Come on Sega, you've got rid of the Denuvo pest on pretty much all of your games EXCEPT for PPT!? Even Sonic Mania got disinfected eventually... Hope you don't make the same silly mistake with PPT2, because the last thing a fine game deserves are review bombings.
