First post, hope I'm doing things right. Hello, by the way! Long-time infrequent visitor, first time poster. I've interacted with Kawa once or twice on bitbucket, though, IIRC. - Might have used a different handle for that interaction. I've also admired tomman's ideals from afar (I think we may have a lot in common... too much to list). I translated some more modern SSA (Substation Alpha) subtitles to JACOSub format (with some manual intervention) and was able to watch Bubblegum Crisis by feeding that subtitle file to my Amiga 500, using a genlock to overlay the output from my laserdisc player. First time I've actually done it (I was born in the mid 90's, so I missed this style of fansubbing the first time around). I love Bubblegum Crisis. OVA #6 can still make me cry on the umpteenth watch. I could basically pretend that 6 was the conclusion (even though I know it's not) and be happy enough with it. Wish it hadn't disappeared, but I'm so very glad it at least got through the first seven (I hated Scoop Chase (#8). Fight me). I have the original Japanese laserdiscs for the whole set of 8; I plan to convert the subs for all of them. Some day I'll get AD Police Files on LD, too. Funny how some of these laserdiscs can be had cheaper than worn-out VHS tapes on fleabay nowadays. I guess no one has a player? Or maybe the quality is too good to satisfy peoples' cravings for VHS crappiness. Either way, that's good for me. I got "Born to Kill" (BGC OVA #2) still sealed in its original wrapping for $5. And "Blow Up" (#3) came with a small 35mm film snip from the episode, a flier, and a small poster for $30. Meanwhile, I'm stuck with a Gateway OEM small form factor PC with a riser card and a proprietary PSU for most stuff from the era that gameports were still in use. At least it uses a 440BX chipset, and I was able to make a Voodoo3 I got free a decade ago fit into it by modifying the bracket. I do like the mixture you've got going on in there. I'd kill for a horizontal full ATX case that I could stack stuff on top of, though. I bought into SSD's two years ago; my 2TB samsung EVO is already corrupting itself. My 4TB is fine seemingly, and my other rando one (my only secondhand one) seems to be okay but I don't trust it or use it for much. That computer is basically a thin client via X forwarding. For everything except laptops (where the max HDD storage density in a <=9mm 2.5" form factor is less than with an SSD), I still will only use spinning hard disks going forward. Got some Toshiba HDD's; the largest sizes I could get that weren't helium-filled. Helium loss is something else I don't want to deal with. My Epson PC-486GR (PC-98 clone) does have a SCSI2SD in it, which so far is working nicely. But that's a little different than what typically is meant by "SSD." For laptops with IDE drives: you can use a regular sized 2.5" IDE -> SATA adapter (not mSATA) and shuck the drive PCB, sometimes. Doesn't work if the drive needs to be screwed to the frame for the HDD cover to go on, like some Dell Latitudes. But for a powerbook it's fine. My Powerbook G4 (running Debian) boots about 25% of the time with a SATA SSD and an IDE/SATA adapter, but if it can get all the way to the XDM login it's usually fine until I power it off. It seems like there's something that can go wrong in the initial minute or so after boot that can trip it up and cause a lockup. I use an SSD there because 2.5" laptop IDE drives are getting kinda pricey and a SATA one plus the converter board doesn't fit. I can shuck the shell off of a SATA SSD and fit it plus the adapter inside the powerbook with room to spare. It's still a powerbook at the end of the day, so it's kinda sluggish and not particularly great. But I do like typing on it so it's fine for just working in emacs.
