Posted by CaptainJistuce It has been mutating into a less virulent form. Testing is showing strains with significant genome deletion, so it’s not a very hardy virus. As a result, vaccines are going to be at least somewhat effective. Of course, there’s no logical reason for relaxing restrictions in the US. The number of cases has never stopped increasing, and it’s the worst it’s ever been right now. The Trumpies are worried about their stock portfolios decreasing, though, and that’s too steep a cost for continuing safe practices. |

Then there's the fact that most of the stimulus money goes where it's not needed. 300 billion dollars for the airline industry? They've been making record profits for years--they could sit on their stash forever without any trouble. That money only serves to continue to inflate the stock and help rich stock holders, not normal citizens. |

The consensus is that the new cards are cheaper in order to preempt AMDs forthcoming entries. They couldn’t get AMD to reveal first, so they’re striking quick and strong. As for SSDs, the best thing they do is shut the hell up. HDDs are the noisiest component. Getting rid of that noise is a huge win. Faster random access is a close second. |

Posted by Screwtape It’s not that complicated, just look at the source. There’s an abstraction layer that converts to GL and some others. It implements what Mario uses. It was never a complicated game in the first place. |

Posted by CaptainJistuce Yeah, I received a 5700xt for Christmas last year, and I had to help reproducing a couple issues I had with the drivers. I think they’re in a good state now, though. I went through a couple Windows games without any problems. Polaris cards show fewer complaints, but I’m not having any more trouble with Navi other than those driver nits. |

Posted by tomman Damn straight. You don't buy a console to look at. What will reviewers come up with next?--it doesn't have a display with a notch, so it's not as good as an iphone? A huge fan means less noise, and I'm all for it. Still, it beats the Xbox Sex proprietary SSDs (because MS had to screw up user-friendly storage expansion options, AGAIN). Yeah, they had an opportunity to be seen as more flexible but blew it, revealing their one and only supported proprietary expansion. |

It never even occurred to me that this use of “master” could be related to that sort of thing. It’s like a master copy, the ones that all the others copy from, something derived from the master-apprentice relationship, not slavery |

The far right call it “virtue signaling.” I used to refer to it as “offended by proxy.” It actually steals focus from the marginalized party, so it’s indirect discrimination. |

This is the internet, so it would be ambiguous if the culprit were anonymous, but if you can look up examples of the person’s personality then you can guess what their intention is. From what I’ve seen I’m clearly pessimistic about the whole notion. I realize that me being that way doesn’t help the issue. I’ll try not to assume so much in the future. |

They're overlooking the fact that the M1 is only fast because it omits a lot of important and hard-to-implement stuff. First, let's look at that 16GB RAM. That's the limit because that's the technological limit. No SoC uses more than that because RAM can't get any smaller to fit in PoP tech. What happens if you need more and have to go off chip? Performance loss. Second, GPUs. Once again, they're in the same chip and current physical limits prevent anything better. Heat is a significant problem. Once they go external, they lose the shared RAM, coherency, and a huge performance advantage. Third, servers. They absolutely need more than 16GB of RAM. They need to communicate with other CPUs. The M1 has no bus, because everything is on-chip. Apple has to invent a new bus protocol or interconnect and somehow outperform the existing ones. And because this is external, the communications physically can't be as fast. Fourth, let's consider the competition: AMD: The Zen 2 laptop chips match performance at the same wattage. Apple has a significant space advantage because they monopolized TSMC 5nm. Zen 3 has a 20% increased IPC over Zen 2, and 5nm will benefit power consumption further. Other ARM: Surprise! Other companies already have ARM server chips like this that perform well, and they've already got solutions to the external infrastructure problem. TLDR, Apple has an embedded processor that's faster by virtue of being less general-purpose--it's perfectly made to fit the use case of a small personal device. It can only maintain its advantage and get faster by switching to smaller manufacturing nodes. Ironically, Apple once again has a product that has to get smaller every year to appease marketing. |
