Today, on "Jistuce is late to the party", I'm watching Big O.

Everyone told me this show is cool, is like the Batman cartoon only with a giant robot in it. Which, sure, that's great. But it isn't making me leap to get there right the fuck now. Especially in the 90s, when I'm too broke for DVDs and on unstable dial-up.

NOBODY told me there's a sharp-tongued robot maid in it. Which, in fairness, would've just earned a look of scorn if they'd told me that twenty years ago. While it isn't exactly a "must-watch" bullet point today, it was a surprise and I actually like the character a lot.

    ...

Also, people lied to me. This isn't very much like Batman at all, despite some cosmetic similarities.
Roger Smith, while being an eccentric wealthy man with a butler and a specially-made crime-fighting vehicle, is much more in the vein of James Bond than Batman. But really, he just wants everyone to chill. He's a negotiator, but somehow negotiations always end up with him rocket-punching building-sized threats to the city. Go figure.

First post, hope I'm doing things right. Hello, by the way! Long-time infrequent visitor, first time poster. I've interacted with Kawa once or twice on bitbucket, though, IIRC. - Might have used a different handle for that interaction.

I've also admired tomman's ideals from afar (I think we may have a lot in common... too much to list).

I translated some more modern SSA (Substation Alpha) subtitles to JACOSub format (with some manual intervention) and was able to watch Bubblegum Crisis by feeding that subtitle file to my Amiga 500, using a genlock to overlay the output from my laserdisc player. First time I've actually done it (I was born in the mid 90's, so I missed this style of fansubbing the first time around).

I love Bubblegum Crisis. OVA #6 can still make me cry on the umpteenth watch. I could basically pretend that 6 was the conclusion (even though I know it's not) and be happy enough with it. Wish it hadn't disappeared, but I'm so very glad it at least got through the first seven (I hated Scoop Chase (#8). Fight me).

I have the original Japanese laserdiscs for the whole set of 8; I plan to convert the subs for all of them.
Some day I'll get AD Police Files on LD, too.

Funny how some of these laserdiscs can be had cheaper than worn-out VHS tapes on fleabay nowadays. I guess no one has a player? Or maybe the quality is too good to satisfy peoples' cravings for VHS crappiness. Either way, that's good for me.
I got "Born to Kill" (BGC OVA #2) still sealed in its original wrapping for $5. And "Blow Up" (#3) came with a small 35mm film snip from the episode, a flier, and a small poster for $30.

So. I am watching Bravern, the super robot anime of the season.

And the show has run into a narrative problem. As of the most recent episode, they have undone death twice via time travel... and are ending the episode with a dramatic death that I can't take seriously because death is barely an inconvenience in this show.

I've been curious about it since seeing Gigguk's video and I typically enjoy mecha shows. Appreciate your thoughts and will definitely have that in mind if I ever pick this up.

Currently rewatching 86 with the wife and so far she's been enjoying it. Other titles we recently finished watching together:
    Apothecary Diaries
    Oshi no Ko
    7th Loop Villainess
    Dr Stone New World
    Skip and Loafer
    Boku Yaba 2

Other than that currently watching on my own Undead Unluck and Classroom of Elite 3, and finished Solo Levelling. I was pretty happy it got an adaptation, but some part of me still think that it hasn't given the webtoon justice. I saw that Viral HIt has also gotten an adaptation, but seeing the animation of the first episode didn't inspire much confidence in me.

Unrelated, but it's nice to post to this board again after a long time. Been too preoccupied dealing with real life, so I've mostly just been lurking.

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

For what it is worth, they managed to stick the landing, despite the severe narrative challenge.

Also, Bravern may be the fastest a series has gone from broadcast to Super Robot Wars, having made it into a game within just a few weeks of the final episode. GRANTED, it's a mobile game, but that's still a higher honor than some shows have had after decades.
