Introductory notes

1. The CGA and Hercules drivers have to remap from sixteen to four or two colors. For comparison between versions, images are provided, taken using DOSBox with machine=cga. This is the EGA palette for reference:
   
2. I may need to re-test those focusing on Views.
3. Each driver has its name and description from the Install/Setup Program listed because it's cute.

CGA320BW - CGA with RGB monitor - 640x200 Black & White (Preferred)

This combination works with an IBM Color Graphics Adaptor and an RGB (OR COMPOSITE) monitor. It will produce black and white images, with various dot patterns used to simulate color. See also CGA 4 color.

The f3a29f driver uses navy and cyan instead of black and white on non-CGA systems (via DOSBox), or black and navy on CGA.

This combination works with an IBM Color Graphics Adaptor and an RGB monitor. It will display four colors, with various combinations used to simulate 16 colors. See also CGA 2 color.

Each of these has a different color palette and/or reduction method. In order, using Leisure Suit Larry 2 and the Sierra logo in its copy protection screen:

• ede6a9: Navy, Green, Maroon, Brown (EGA) or Navy, Cyan, Magenta, Gray (CGA). Navy stays navy.
• 9acf11: Black, Cyan, Magenta, White (EGA) or Black, Cyan, Red, White (CGA). Navy becomes black.
• ddbf5c and 5a8ab7: Black, Cyan, Magenta, White (EGA) or Black, Cyan, Red, White (CGA). Navy turns magenta (EGA) or red (CGA).

I'm not entirely sure how SQ3's is timestamped later than QFG2's.

EGA640 - EGA/VGA - 16 Colors

This selection works with any adaptor that claims hardware compatibility with an IBM Enhanced Graphics Adaptor.

HERCMONO - Hercules 720 x 348 - monochrome

This combination will work with the Hercules Monochrome Graphics Adaptor (or compatible) and a monochrome monitor. It uses various patterns to produce 16 shades.

MCGA320 - IBM PS2, Models 25 & 30 - 16/256 Colors

This should be selected for use on an IBM PS/2 Model 25 or Model 30, OR any computer that supports the MCGA standard. If you have a newer IBM PS/2 Model 30/286, you may realize a slight speed increase if you select the EGA/VGA with RGB option.

PCJR320 - PCjr with RGB or Composite monitor - 16 Colors

This combination works with the built-in video circuitry of an IBM PC jr. You should configure your system with no memory resident utilities. See the box label for special memory requirements for the PC jr.

TANDY320 - Tandy 1000 with RGB monitor - 16 Colors

This combination works with the built-in video circuitry of a TANDY 1000 series computer. If you have installed an additional graphics adaptor in your system, you may select that adaptor instead, but you must ensure that your monitor is connected to the correct plug.

VGA320 - VGA or IBM PS2 - 256 Colors

This selection works with any card and monitor that claims VGA compatibility. You must have a VGA card and a VGA or multisync monitor. This selection will allow 256 colors with 320 x 200 pixel resolution.

VGA320BW - VGA or IBM PS2 - Grey Scale

This selection works with any card that claims VGA compatibility and a monochrome VGA monitor. You must have a VGA card and a VGA monitor. This selection will allow 256 shades of grey with 320 x 200 pixel resolution.

The trick with this driver is that there's two ways to set a color in VGA. You can set them by directly writing to the DAC, or by calling a BIOS interrupt. One is fast, but the other accounts for grayscale monitors. Effectively, if you use the faster DAC method with a monochrome monitor attached, you only see one color channel, blue if I remember correctly, whereas if you use the BIOS method, the BIOS will generate a properly weighted gray value. I don't know if VGA320BW uses the BIOS or weighs the gray values manually, but the results are quite distinct.
