"higan v.094-2: Import Entire Folder Of Games?"

Hi,

higan is the greatest emulator for Linux ever made!
I am running higan v.094-2 on Kubuntu 14.04 LTS 64Bit.
How can I import an entire folder of games(in ZIP format)?

Thanks, and great job!

Jesse

Have you tried unzipping them somewhere temporarily at least? It's like the most obvious and easiest thing to try.

I don't think higan lets you import en masse at all, unzipped or otherwise.

Something about going against the intent of the library.

Exactly that, yes.

It's also more that the functionality doesn't belong in higan proper. It's not meant to be a full-on ROM manager to scan your entire collection at once. But it will gain a bit more functionality, such as "wipe RAM", "remove this game from your library", "rename title", etc.

I may make an importer tool again, but I'm not sure if I will do one with a heuristics fallback like purify. I realized the trouble it caused as I revised the manifest format, and I'd like to avoid causing people trouble as I continue to refine and perfect things.

The SNES, having a full catalog of every unique PCB, is pretty much finalized at this point. And soon the DB will span complete English(US)+Japanese(JP) games, sans some of the revisions. PAL images lose out, but then, honestly, I never play those anyway since I can't do 50hz Vsync on any of my monitors (I do really want to play Terranigma through in English, even if it's an awful translation, though.)

But the other systems ... they're very volatile. If I make another tool like purify, it's pretty guaranteed your game folders will break again in the future.

The PAL release has been successfully patched to play in NTSC region, it just needs a header field change for heuristic loaders, and modifying the region check code to accept NTSC instead of PAL. I know someone, possibly on this forum even, posted a patch that did both of those things, it's like a two byte change sans the checksum, but I forgot who did it or where they posted the patch.

I've only come to Higan fairly recently, after discovering a game-breaking issue with VisualBoy Advance, which Higan solves. Good graphics and sound and, (after a little fiddling inside the library) I can even use my existing save games. It was nice to find a good, maintained, unified Nintendo emulator and I'm really looking forward to bringing my ROM image collection together in the library - but file-by-file import is going to make that a very long job.

If there's defined behaviour for what to do if a ROM isn't recognised in the database (use the filename) then I can't see an issue with a simple iterative system that imports all of the roms in a folder (or a zip file... many of my zips contain multiple language versions of the same ROM) one after the other. The job of 'tidying up' the library afterwards is logically smaller than the job of individually adding all my files by hand.

For the moment, I can browse my collection in the filing system and once I've chosen a game to play I can head off over to Higan to import it - cutting and pasting the path into the 'Load Image' dialog. But it's a bit of a faff that a relatively small bit of code would avoid...

Great bit of work, though. This time I will finally finish Oracle of Seasons... :)
