Bumped because I just rewatched God Bless Dancouga.

I just wanted to say that I love how Dancouga starts out about as "real robot" as you can get, and by the end of it they're stabbing a god in the face with a blazing sword.

    ...

And maybe ponder why Dancouga never comes up when people start arguing about which mech is the most powerful in all of anime.
Gurren-Lagann throws galaxies like ninja stars? A. That's not at all what was going on, and B. Dancouga killed a god.

Getter Emperor shatters planets with the shockwaves from its transformation? Dancouga killed a god.

Ideon destroyed and remade the entire universe? Wait a second, that basically means Ideon is the Dancouga's natural prey, doesn't it?

    ...

Get tomman to play Chaos Wars on PS2. :)

(I actually only found out about that game because it's an IF game, not because of its hilariously bad dub.)

So. I've recently started watching 2018's "Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion", a coproduction between TakaraTomy and... Japan Railway.
It is equal parts plastic robot commercial and steel locomotive commercial, which is a little odd but not unheard of. I assumed it was a fairly by the books shounen anime, and the first dozen episodes were exactly what I expected. Competently-written, but not pushing any boundaries. There's a heart in it but, much like our heroes, the story is traveling some frequently-used rails.

So I was settled in for a predictable genre piece featuring young boys shouting about courage and friendship while piloting cheaply-animated combat robots. You know, the Mac&Cheese of anime. It doesn't challenge your expectations, it isn't pushing any boundaries, but it is a familiar and enjoyable place to be when you want to just shut your brain off for a little while.

    And then this happened.

That's Hatsune Miku driving a train robo.

And just in case there was any attempt to write this off as an homage design, they make sure the character introduces herself as Hatsune Miku, and she speaks in a choppy synthesizer voice (they apparently hired the lady that gave the Vocaloid software her voice to perform the character in Shinkalion, and then manually applied a filter over the recorded dialog). They apparently even sold Vocaloid x Shinkalion Miku Merch.

And now my brain is thoroughly derailed. My Mac&Cheese is on the floor and I've got no idea how it happened.

A brief bit of furiously confused searches later, I discovered this show is a LOT weirder than I expected. As in I can look forward to seeing Hatsune Miku™ and Ikari Shinji™ team up to fight Godzilla™, and not one single word of that is made up. And for once, "How the fuck did they get the licenses for all that" isn't even in my top five questions.

Update: While Shinji has not gotten in the robot, we DID have a five-minute Evangelion parody as the show plugged the real-world 500 TYPE EVA train(which was due for final departure in May of that year, as the show helpfully reminds the audience). I was prepared for this, I watch my episode previews like a good boy.

I was NOT prepared for Cruel Angel's Thesis to start playing as said train pulled into the station. Damn near died of laughter.

Also, Hatsune Miku is a recurring guest character, not a one-off cross-promotion. I am far happier about this than I should be, as I kinda like her in-show character.

Episode 23: The main character's DAD gets to fight in a train robo.

Actual plot: His dad was transferred to Kyoto several episodes ago to oversee construction of a new branch of the train-robo organization so transforming battle trains can protect ALL of Japan instead of just Tokyo. The family is visiting this episode. Main character's kid sister has been watching telenovelas unsupervised and is convinced her father is cheating because that is always what happens when a man is away on business. This is fucking hilarious.
It also turns out one of the projects his dad has been overseeing is development of a train robo that can be effectively piloted by adults.

Otaku shit, both of the train and robot variety:

It is an older bullet train, introduced in 1997 as opposed to the main character's 2011 train. I had to /wiki/shinkansen to check this. What made me think to check it was that the train looked a lot like the Liner Gao in 1997's King of Braves GaoGaiGar. I didn't expect it to be exactly the same year, just "new when GaoGaiGar came out".

AND his older train transforms into an older style of robot, with a shit-ton of missile launchers for maximum Itano Circus power and a glass dome on the robot head for that sweet Mazinger Layzner view from the top. Spoilers: No research at all was required to date this.

I want THIS lovey shit made into in an anime, PRONTO.

...or at least a VN on Steam~

(At least the artist is on the good track for that, as Kadokawa officially published those in a book. Small steps!)

Today I learned that RWBY - Hyousetsu Teikoku by Shaft already has the first 3 episodes out.

Funny you mention that -- I wasn't aware it was even being broadcast at the time, but I actually caught it in my recommendations maybe no more than a few minutes of it going live :P
I thought at least the first episodes were pretty decent, although the animation and fight choreography in some parts didn't quite meet my expectations. I'm still hopeful they would animate the rest of the series like that clip you posted. I might still just be partial to the original though.

In other news, I'm pretty hyped for Mushoku Tensei Season 2 coming out. I've already finished reading the entire series, so I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of the series getting animated.

Not animes (yet) but I've been reading several isekai which I imagine would look really awesome if animated. One of them is The Beginning after the End which kind of starts out like Mushoku Tensei, but quickly distinguishes itself once story expands further. If you enjoy the fantasy/reincarnation genre, this might be something you'd find interesting.

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

I just want to note that this is the best way to settle toe long-running "is RWBY anime?" argument. It is now definitively "yes"

I can't wait for the 'Japan-does-everything-better' elitists all over 4chan and Twitter to start saying that it's 'an anime adaptation of a Western work' or something like that as their latest excuse to try to call it 'not a true anime series' or something...

Wish I wasn't so goddamn terrible at sticking to things, it's to the point I don't watch anything anymore, because I'm not only so airheaded when watching to the point of missing obvious things that are about to happen but I end up not watching for weeks/months for seemingly no reason. :p

    And on today's Hackernews frontpage:
    https://animationobsessive.substack.com/p/everything-is-anime
    https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31983343

Europeans in particular had some fine productions of very animesque design, like the Italian-made WinX Club. Magical girls, fairies, witches, tight costumes, big colorful eyes, sparkles everywhere, and even schools for magicians and the like?! Where do I sign!??!?! If this came out from any Japan studio instead from RAI/Rainbow, I wouldn't have noticed the difference :P Sadly, Viacom/Nick bought the franchise about a decade ago and threw the early seasons into a live volcano - the official versions now allowed for distribution of those are some heavily abridged 1-hour TV "movies". Oh, and the Latam Spanish dub is now lost forever, too. So instead of having ufotable or whoever is the biggest anime studio right now among the nerdddom coming up with some badass Bloom, we get... nothing :/

So I just learned there's an anime coming out in April titled "Fuuto PI".

As the name might imply, it is the latest sequel to Kamen Rider Double‚ and the first in quite a while. And they appear to have gotten everyone back, including Philip. So it'll actually have Double in it instead of Joker!

I'm pretty excited for more Double, but not near as excited as Shotaro's actor is. He's made no secret of the fact that being a Kamen Rider was basically his dream job. Apparently part of the reason Double's had so many sequels is he's been running a one-man campaign to get him in Kamen Rider again ever since the series ended.
