Also, no, fuck you, 1 pixel = whatever goddamn unit I want it to be. I have a 2x scale monitor, and I have that paired with a 1x scale monitor. Both the same approximate physical dimensions, but one's 3840x2160 and the other is 1920x1080. I expect this to cause problems, but I expect every app I launch to start zoomed to the configured 200% level, and it doesn't matter with the other monitor, since a single force-100% app is running there, gigantic title bar and all.

I expect GUI libraries to gracefully support arbitrary resolution scaling, and to gracefully render vectors and lines and fonts relative to that scale factor. I expect them to handle bitmaps semi-gracefully. I know Windows now has a thing where it supports HQ2x or similar for upscaling bitmaps when rendering GDI apps on higher DPI displays.

I don't care if this is painful, you can't expect every single user to have identical hardware.

You know what? Fuck it, there's no point even conversing with you. I'll just apply a little magic, and not worry about anything you have to say ever again.

Also, since Jistuce made me read it, I thought I'd respond to it.

Fuck you, Windows 7 dies in less than two days. Good riddance, it was already replaced years ago. There are many choices for alternatives that continue to receive updates. Not the least of which is Windows 10.

If you still insist on using Windows 7, enjoy your final Update Tuesday, then indefinite silence on the updates front. Maybe Anonymous will come along and help you continue back porting patches from Windows 10 to make it a safe choice, if you trust Anonymous more than you trust, say, Microsoft with Windows 10, or your favorite Linux distribution, or your favorite BSD, since I heard all the chuds migrated to that after the EEEVIL Code of Conduct appeared.

I'm supposedly a millennial, yet when I had money, I bought several expensive phones over the years, unlocked up front, free and clear. Now that I don't have much money any more, I just stopped buying new shit constantly. The only things I rent are either network services or hosted infrastructure. I don't rent physical devices.

I suppose my family house could be considered a rental, though. We technically "own" it, but we have to pay a monthly mortgage payment. All the stuff inside it is owned, free and clear, though. Even the 2003 Dodge Neon, which was purchased used from a dealership, where it had served a year since its production as a rental car. This pattern follows the same after our previous car, which was a 1987 Ford Escort, purchased in 1988. Both times, with cash up front.

The Escort was damaged due to a collision with a motorcycle driver who veered into oncoming traffic around a blind curve. They did survive their encounter with us, but our car was dented severely. We actually had to "total" out the car after that, since the cost of the damage far exceeded the current value of the car. We never did bother to repair it, but ended up with an all new license tag for it. It was probably worth about $250 in trade in value against the Neon.

Bonus points regarding TrustedInstaller: If it's a Windows Store app, it will also be using NTFS Encrypting File System (EFS) to protect the files, and the certificate and keys that control that encryption are owned by TrustedInstaller, and also password protected with a key I have yet to determine, be it a static key, a system key, or whatever.

The only way around this is to run the app, inject a DLL into it somehow, and that DLL dump the filesystem to an unencrypted location. There's a tool for this, too. Just don't expect those UWP or even Centennial apps to run outside of the store mechanism once removed from their encrypted storage. Certainly a handy way to hack at the resources, though. Due to the EFS, Windows Store apps are not likely to use extra encryption on their resources, like some Unreal Engine games have been known to do.

Yet I still religiously tune in for my Free Gaems, which go in my collection. They even mostly run OK on Linux, thanks to Lutris, and about a Bajillion hacks. Of course, I'm not playing any of the anti-cheat-packed ones.

I had to start Dead Space over again, as a result of destroying my Linux install in a fit of anger to replace it with an existing Windows install from a slower drive. I later moved Windows back to the other drive, and reinstalled Arch from scratch.

I did some things differently this time, though:

1) Instead of using refind, I used grub, set to remember the last boot option. Works a lot better with multiple installed kernels.
2) Instead of using full disk encryption, minus the boot volume, containing LVM2, containing swap/root/home partitions, I used raw swap and root partitions, free and clear.
3) Instead of using ext4 for everything, I used btrfs with zstd compression enabled.

I pulled a stupid too, I bothered to shrink the partitions from the old system enough to back them up on a tiny 256GB drive, but I didn't bother backing them up. So I lost my Dead Space saves.

Guess what I found from my time in Windows? That's right, Direct3D 9 has degraded so badly in Windows 10 as to be unusable for Dead Space. The frame rate severely tanks, and starts to trigger my monitor's FreeSync, which strobes horribly, causing the monitor to get stuck strobing its backlight for at least several minutes afterward, even when switched away from the game. Yuck!

Meanwhile, thanks to DXVK, and its newly merged in D9VK, Dead Space runs at least 60fps at 3840x2160 on an RX 480. If only DXVK could be used as easily in Windows.

PROTO·DOME - Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening "Mah Boi" OC ReMix

Yup, I'm up to 3978, which means I've almost caught up to the latest 4025. Then I can switch to listening to random shit on Spotify, which I've got for free for the next two months, since they gave me the 3 months for one payment re-subscribe deal again.

I'd say the Steam/GOG/whatever have "ads" alright, just not the way you think. They obviously want to encourage you to buy-buy-buy, so they have a storefront, which advertises new releases and other delights, sometimes even recommendations from your friends, reviews from various feeds, sales, freebies, free to play (often pay to win) titles.

Of course, I think only Steam and Epic Games Store have that Free To Play / Pay To Win thing going on. GOG mostly either just gives games away randomly, or expects you to buy them up front, or buy add-ons. No rental games from them.

Humble Bundle "sort of" does the rental thing, but the way they've structured their rental thing, you get to keep a selection of games permanently, or at least for the life of your account, assuming you do nothing stupid to get your account banned, or one day decide to request an account deletion. I have yet to decide to participate in this particular rental scheme.

Then there's the eternal stupidity that is Apple Arcade. Rental only, and only on Apple devices. At least one game I played will be coming to Steam this year, so I can buy it there. I can't say the same about the other game, whose developers say they are eternally pleased by their deal with Apple Arcade, so it won't be leaving the world of casual tablet/phone and Mac desktop gaming, even though it's a serious long play third person adventure game, with absolute tripe touch controls, (seriously, bring a gamepad), that seriously improved upon the original title in many, many ways. Oh well.

In case anyone beats me to it: please try running Dead Space on Windows 10 with the DXVK runtime extracted to its install folder alongside the game binaries. Naturally, you’ll need a video card with Vulcan support.

And I finally finished my OC ReMixes collection, so now on to listening to one of my accumulated daily mixes sets in Spotify. And it’s even pooling in a lot of stuff I either haven’t favorited yet, or just plain haven’t heard yet.

Sounds like the time we thought it would be a good idea to buy Dragon Quest VIII. Boy was that a big mistake. Two hours in, and I barely followed most of the (voiced!) dialog, and never got out of the first town we were supposed to be ejected from, along with the king that had somehow been cursed to look like Piccolo. You know, because Akira Toriyama characters and races all look the same across franchises.

Anyway, I gave that shit up and put in the Final Fantasy XII demo, and thoroughly enjoyed it, leading to a purchase and several successful playthroughs of the full game.

iOS Safari also tells me that “Toriyama” is misspelled, but offers no suggestions as to how it should be corrected. It also tried to correct “demo” in the previous paragraph to “Demi”.

Also, for what it’s worth, I never even made it to the first dungeon in DQ8. I was still in the process of being banished from the intro town by the time I got annoyed that the game wasn’t going anywhere and stopped playing it. Also everyone seemed to really be enamored with the cockney accents in use by the completely voice acted dialogue, but all it did was annoy me.

I may give it another try some day, since I already have the game anyway. I'll have to give it more patience if I want to give it a proper go.

I'm just using whatever they have always slogged off to me, with no attempt to revert to some old design. Oh, and I also use the official app on mobile devices.

Oh, and I'm also paying them $11.99 per month for the Premium status.

Can't show you my Gnome with default wallpaper right now, nor can I show you my macOS Catalina with default wallpaper, because at the moment, I'm using my Windows 10 with default wallpaper.

I do pretty much the same things in all three environments anyway. Discord voice and sometimes video, Skype video, and web browsing.

If I need to do Windows development, I boot Linux and use my Windows 10 development VM.

If I need to do macOS development, I boot macOS.

If I'm booted into Windows 10 bare metal, I'm probably not doing any development at all.
