Can't confirm this on real hardware because I don't have it, but I thought I should mention it anyway:

The spotlight circle is displayed incorrectly sometimes as it can be seen, and the same seems to happen with the european version of the game (Sailormoon (France))

I'm using the latest version of bsnes (v068) with:

Compatibility profile
Direct3D video driver
No Aspect Correction
Scale x3 (Windowed)
Sync Video/Sync Audio

I do not think this is a bug all Emulators do this with this game.

Yeah, I'm sure this effect has been discussed before - I think we actually concluded that this was intended to represent depth - you can see the bird is standing on something - it's just a very badly done effect (please correct me if I'm wrong, my memory is terrible).

Upon further inspection, it's really just a poor representation of depth. Since there's no way of distinguishing the background from the foreground, I assumed at first that this would be a graphical bug.

I guess this case is closed then.

A perennial false bug report, but it's easy to see why: it's a lousy looking effect.

While we're talking Sailor Moon, Another Story's intro text with the fan translation is another common false report.

They were trying to recreate an effect seen in the anime, but did a very bad job of it.

I'll post a picture as soon as I figure out how.

Edit: Okay, I think I've got it now. ;)

Its still a bit weird looking, but much more obvious what the intended effect is.

Even with the screenshot from the anime above, I still can't seem to understand what's trying to be accomplished with that shitty effect in either case. My eyes can't do it or something.

What you're SUPPOSED to be seeing is the "stage" inset on all four sides.
So when the spotlight hits an edge, the part shining on the stage backdrop and the part shining on the "frame" will appear offset from each other due to the different depths.

But yeah, it's a really poorly-drawn representation of the effect, in both cases.

I don't know if my shitty sketch will make things more clear or not, but I just spent 5000 hours in MS Paint, so I'm posting it anyway. ;)

See she's supposed to be standing on the front edge of a narrow stage, and the spotlight is coming in at an angle so it hits the front part differently than the back.

Rabite--

I now actually understand what they were going for thanks to your solid badassery. It is actually a reasonable result when considering what they were trying to do. You are a gentleman.

I can't imagine more than ~5% of people seeing that image and assuming it's a spotlight against the right angle of a hollow box. Maybe it is more obvious in motion.

Thanks. My eyes can do it now.

God damn, after years of seeing this bug reported no one has managed to explain it so thoroughly as you, Rabite.

We need to save these two images for future generations.
