400k seems unrealistically high. Then again, I don't understand the appeal of clone hardware, so I'm not one to ask.

Only needs 4k units to reach that (if competing with eBay).

Physical things cost money to make. If he sells an FPGA system for $100 each on eBay, then after taxes, eBay fees, Paypal fees, parts, assembly fees, shipping fees, etc ... he'd be looking at maybe $20 profit per system. So try 20,000 units. And now consider that selling and shipping that many units would be a full-time job for several years.

we're getting pretty far off-topic, but AVS costs $180 and Nt Mini costs $450, so if you assume an FPGA SNES would cost somewhere between the two, you're looking at potentially solid margins with reasonably realistic sales targets.

(($450 - $180) / 2) + $180 = $315
$315 - $80 manufacturing etc. = $235
$400,000 / $235 = 1,703 units

He could do it like OSSC - some units are DIY kits, and most of them are fully assembled ones. But still, this looks like several years of effort just to get some money for the time he already spent. And this is probably going to be in his free time again.

Not to mention finding ~1700 people who would pay $300 for a SNES... At least they won't need a Framemeister.

Also not to mention competing with other SNES clone products. The market really isn't as big as he's expecting.

Cemu pulled in $20K a month by emulating Breath of the Wild right at release time. How much does he think people are gonna pay for Link to the Past, which has been emulated a million times elsewhere already?
