Bonk?

But yeah, back in the day I never once saw a TG16 and actually didn't know about it until I read about it in a gaming magazine.

A History and Overview of the TurboGrafx-16 by Pat the NES Punk:

Maybe the points don't matter that much, but the frequency does? 3.1GHz / 4.4 GHz = 0.70{45}, multiplied with 88 is exactly 62. So based on the raw clock speed 3GHz might be enough for 60fps. The i5-2450M has 3MB L3 cache and the i7-4790K has 8, which might be one reason for a slowdown.

I run Yoshi's Island on the spinning title screen on my jobs laptop (i5 4200M, 2.5GHz - 3.1GHz). It has 1646 points on single thread and I got 52-57 fps, mostly 57... On a early test I did on the HP laptop, I got ~46fps on the same screen... Both processos has 2.5 to 3.1GHz.

So... Higan counts more on IPC than raw clock speed

Putting the data from this topic,

2450M - 3.1GHz/46fps = 67,39MHz/fps
3520M - 3.4GHz/55fps = 61,81MHz/fps (This CPU goes up to 3.6GHz, but Windows says it tops at 3.4GHz)
4200M - 3.1GHz/57fps = 54,38MHz/fps
4670 - 3.8GHz/71fps = 53,52MHz/fps
7490 - 4.4GHz/88fps = 50,00MHz/fps

There's a huge improvement from 2nd to 4th generation, and the 3rd are in the middle of both. 4th to 7th generation didn't improved a lot...

The only person I ever knew with a TG16 (and CD) was a friend with rich divorced parents who bought him stuff all the time.

I feel like here the problem was that there was no Mario, Sonic, Zelda, etc. to hype the system. It seems to me like the library in Japan was building off established PC98 and other computer titles which were unknown here.

(Although what did hype Sega stuff before Sonic? I was always a Nintendo person so I never paid much attention to that.)

I played the TG16 once (I mean, aside from emulation) as a kid. A friend had rented the thing and we played Galaga 90 (or 91? regardless, it's a port of Galaga 89 I think it was named in the arcade) thought it was pretty good actually.

I always figured "Bonk" was the TG16 mascot, or at least, the closest thing to it. Pat the NES Punk did a pretty good history review of the console https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_Q2spNUuSA for anyone curious. oops already posted. Well, it's a good overview.

Anyway, the system had a much larger library in Japan and from what I understand, it really didn't caught on in the oversea market.

edit: "Keith Courage" doesn't count as a mascot.

Bonk did become the mascot of the TurboGrafx-16, but by then the system was already suffering, if it wasn't at release. The Sega Genesis had Altered Beast as its pack-in game a year before Bonk's Adventure was released, and both consoles were released during the same month in North America.

Was there ever any question that Keith Courage is not the mascot? Look, here's his original identity:

"Spirit Hero Wataru"

It was a licensed game, sort of like LJN's NES games, but way better (though that's not saying much). The PC Engine never had this game as its pack-in.

I kind of want to find out if anyone ever made a fan sub of that anime that uses the Keith Courage names...

Chou Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru Episode 1

Not a huge fan of the art style, their eyes are like half their head size. I only watch anime with characters that have have eyes that are,at worse, 1/3rd of their head size, thank you very much.

Same mangaka than Detective Conan if I remember well. Never really got into that.

All the most CPU demanding games are games with crappy programming.

Yoshi's Island and Megaman X2 are crappily programmed? Were they secretly published by LJN?

I'm taking about Super Ghouls and Ghosts and Super Empire Strikes Back. They don't do anything too complicated but the have a lot of slowdown because of bad programming.
