I might be one of them UNIXoids, and I sure don't like X. That thing is the opposite of minimal. The only reason it got ahead in the first place was the first-movers' advantage and 1990's craziness.

Then again, Windows is a better implementation of the real Unix philosophy (Worse is better), and its GUI is pretty much perfect (or was, anyway, except for the Aero debacle and the Metro debacle and the Windows 10 start menu debacle), so I might be biased here.

As for UXtardation, there's a simple heuristic you can use. Go on the website. Does it look like it was designed by a sane person? Then the project is probably sane too.

Wayland is probably the first technology in a long time (other than cryptocurrencies, and AppImages as I said above) I'm bullish on.

Will I still able to browse websites, watch porn, play my Steam videogames, and rant about shit that bugs me once X is dead?

As long as you're using Gnome. Everything else will break regularly as Team Gnome takes over Wayland, declares it a part of the Gnome API, and starts changing major things at random..

    > Will I still able to browse websites

    Sure.

    > watch porn

    You mean, non-website porn?

    > play my Steam videogames

Once X11 is *dead*? Probably not. I mean, I assume Wine will be ported to Wayland at some point, so those games will be fine, and for Linux-native games it may be possible to update SDL2 to a version that supports Wayland, but there will be a lot of games built around GLX or raw X11 that will break.

Luckily, it'll be a long time before X11 dies completely - XWayland is an X11 server built on top of the Wayland protocol (much like there are X11 servers built on the Windows and macOS APIs). At the moment it's a bit awkward for gaming, since it only supports one resolution (the Wayland desktop resolution), and it doesn't support locking the mouse to a window, so using the mouse to aim the camera in first-person games doesn't really work. However, I believe an extension for that is under development.

    > and rant about shit that bugs me

Friend, sometimes I wonder whether death itself could stop you from ranting.

    Rant on, you crazy diamond.

How is it an issue? If the program only runs at your desktop resolution than how do you mouse outside it? I suppose the title bar could be an issue. Is there no fullscreen mode?

I think it's also the ability to move the mouse-cursor to the middle of the screen without the mouse physically moving?

Basically, when I tried to play Fallout: New Vegas under XWayland, I could only look left and right by a certain amount until the hidden mouse-cursor hit the side of my monitor. Normally, I can just fling the mouse and spin until I'm dizzy.

Hmm, interesting. So it stops passing through directional input from the mouse to the running software if the mouse courser hits the edge.

That’s called “mouse warping.” I’m pretty sure that’s handled now.

The thing that makes XWayland worthless is the fact that it uses X timers (at a 1ms granularity) for refresh rate. So instead of 60Hz, things run at 58.8Hz and stutter constantly. That’s just not acceptable.

How low are your standards and how high is your budget?

For values of (low, low), consider one of the Chinese Raspberry Pi clones, such as Orange Pi or Banana Pi. That'll set you back $20, give or take.
For values of (medium, medium), consider the Raspberry Pi or its slightly nicer Chinese clones, such as the ODROID family. $50 or so.
For values of (high, high), buy an old computer off of your local equivalent of Craigslist. Anywhere between $10-$1000.

Personally, I'd just buy the cheapest garbage I could find and then get decent external hard drives/hard drive enclosures and run Tahoe-LAFS (one China Pi per drive/enclosure, they're dirt cheap anyway) in case the Chinese try to pull a fast one on you.

That might have poor I/O performance though. If you need that then I'd recommend buying an old computer, which shouldn't be too expensive but takes a bit more time, especially if you want one with a receipt.

A zero-budget option would be to see if you've got any old laptops lying around. Those make for great servers with their low power consumption, silent fans (if you're lucky or install passive cooling), and built-in UPS.

You can probably get a used Thinkstation with at least Gigabit LAN (or similar units from other manufacturers) on the cheap, and invest in a handful of multi-TB SATA HDDs to slap in them. As for OS, I've been using XigmaNAS and it's been working great for networked home storage. I don't even use the advanced features on it, just had mine set up with RAIDz2 pool and snapshots, and a few other odds and ends.

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

Well, fuck you very much too, Microsoft.

Also, gotta love the "ancient 1990s laptop" icon they choose to represent my Sandy Bridge laptop.

I don’t know about Gnome or KDE, but at least Sway has already implemented an api for cursor locking to a window. It’s right in their FAQ, along with why Nvidia is evil for being proprietary and doing their own thing for Wayland support and why Sway will never support them by means other than the Nouveau drivers.

First MS ruined the calculator, by replacing it with some Metro UWP webshit.

Now MS also is in the works to ensure your base OS install will ship with absolutely no usable applications:
    https://news.slashdot.org/story/20/01/21/1614225/microsoft-is-testing-ads-in-wordpad-in-windows-10

Not that I care about Wordpad - if you need a texteditor for large files, there are plenty of them available, at several price tags. For Win32/64, portable editions included! And if you need to edit actual documents, LibreOffice is still free, if you don't want to contract herpes pirate pay for Office.
But still, why bother injecting ads in base OS accessories!?

I didn't knew Redmond, WA got relocated to Silly Valley, CA...

The Win 10 calculator is much nicer than the Win 7 calculator, it has a mode where you can toggle individual bits in a number that I find very useful.

Would it be crude to say it's because the millennials don't want to shell out any money to buy things, and instead try to get it stuff for 'free' and/or rent it?

I mean sure, it's disgusting, but as they say, 'this is the future you chose'. You can't both have your cake and eat it. The people actively with informed consent of their own volition chose this, because they valued the flexibility, the same as with spying.

Otherwise, Microsoft doesn't have a good revenue stream. In the age of digital download and auto-update, it makes zero sense to ship discrete versions when you could just continuously auto-update. It's like complaining about Adobe switching over to CC or Firefox's version "numbering" "system" or whatever. What did you expect?
