Can I just say that's why we can't have nice things?

It seems fair. The anime fandom is full of shits.

If anime is to blame for anime culture, I think it's more than fair to say anime was a mistake.

I appreciate my fair share of Moe. But the amount of anthropomorphization Japan has been pumping out is getting ridiculously getting close to the singularity. The Anime commandments must has Rule 34 and 35 right on top of the list. Followed closely by incest is wincest.

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

Today I learned about two shit anime productions that I wish I should have never learned about:

    1) Back Street Girls: Gokudols, a Netflix Original™. Sadly it's not the revival of the Backstreet Boys, although as the name implies, the main theme of this show is genderbend: yakuza people who were given two choices: genderbend idols or death. They... didn't picked death, and as result, we got 10 episodes of pure WTFest. And yes, Netflix spent good cash dubbing this to several languages, including my glorious Latin American Spanish. Why Netflix, why, why, WHY?!?!?!

    2) The Leader, an upcoming Chinese animation based on the works by the father of Communism itself, the one and only Karl Marx. Just what we needed, more politics propaganda targeting the weak minds of our young population. Or good source material for the weirdest porn doujinshi ever. Whatever, where is my Mein Kampf anime by ufotable!??!?!

Anyone seen Dororo yet? It's a remake of the original by Ozamu Tezuka, and just started very recently. I was vaguely familiar with the original so I decided to pick it up, and even after just seeing the opening I was hyped. The opening music was so awesome, I'm itching to find the full single once it's out.

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

I have it downloaded, gonna check it out later.

For some reason I'm not that invested into the shows this season, but these are the ones I'm watching:

    1. Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari ("The Rising of the Shield Hero")
    2. Manaria Friends (human/dragon princesses)
    3. Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka (mahou PTSD shoujo)
    4. Sword Art Online: Alicization
    5. Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken
    6. Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita! (Our MaidYour Sister is Way Too Annoying)
    7. Domestic na Kanojo (Help I Slept With My New Stepsister)
    8. Gotoubun no Hanayome ("The Quintessential Quintuplets")

I'm usually two or three seasons behind, and even then I don't intend to keep up with every single title, considering I still have a sizeable list I'm working through :)

    Just started:
    Dororo
    Bunny Girl Senpai
    Mob Psycho 100 S2

    Currently watching:
    SAO: Alicization
    Tensura
    Jojo 5
Legend of Galactic Heroes (original) - I can see now why this is a classic
    Irresponsible Captain Tylor
    B:Beginning
    Kekkai Sensen
Japan Animator Expo - A mix of pretty cool, and some very WTF anime shorts
    Toaru Index 3

    Recently finished:
    SSSS Gridman
    Attack on Titan S3
    Release the Spyce
Zombieland Saga - don't usually follow idol or zombie titles, but this actually worked for me
    Goblin Slayer
Karakai Jouzu Takagi-san - Nishikata you so dense

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

Kaguya Wants to be Confessed to: the Genius' War of Love and Brains(official english title is Kaguya-sama: Love is war) is absolutely fantasticly absurd.

Premise: the student council president and vice-president both like each other. But they've both determined that the person who asks the other out will forever be at a disadvantage in the relationship.
So they start plotting and scheming to force the other one to make the first move while deflecting their counterpart's efforts. All while the secretary keeps throwing monkey wrenches into the works and the announcer is REALLY excited.

Been following the manga for ages, and this is a perfect adaptation.

As an aside, how do you make up an english title out of whole cloth and STILL wind up with an honorific?

Dororo looks good. Reminds me of Ninja Scroll and Mushishi.

Did Release the Spyce go anywhere? The first few episodes had a nice training arc, but the villains seemed very... cheesy, I guess.

Seriously, it does look like an interesting series. I've been watching more school slice-of-life titles since that's what my wife likes to watch. :P

Yeah, it was an absolute cheese-fest, and there's a bit of a twist at the tail end, but entire thing is short enough to binge so you can just let the spyce flow.

This is an awesome slice-of-high-school-life show instead of a "can we just shoot them all so something happens" show. So at least you're in good hands.

So there's an anime called Super Beast Machine God Dancouga. It straddles the line between a semi-realistic military mecha show and a classic "FORM BLAZING SWORD" super robot production, giving us a story where aliens have invaded the Earth and the military built a "FORM BLAZING SWORD" super robot. The title mechanoid doesn't show up for the first time until the series is halfway over, because there's a lot of plot beyond "stab the monster of the week".
It is weird and poorly-paced, but it occupies a unique space in anime history and has a style that makes it impossible to hate.
There's an enduring fanbase that ensures that the Dancouga team keeps showing up in the Super Robot Wars anime crossover games even when they use literally none of the show's plot(at one point just dropping the mech in and handwaving it away with a one-sentence explanation that it was built by the cast of a completely different show), and Bandai even designed their own fanfic enhanced version of Dancouga for the games that combines with a canonically dead character's canonically destroyed mecha because they thought he was cool and wanted to undo his death.

THAT is not what I watched tonight. I watched the four-episode OVA, Dancouga: Blazing Epilogue. It is rushed, full of abrupt out-of-nowhere plot twists that are never developed or forgotten about in ten minutes, and large portions of the show are animated on a shoestring budget. Characters literally come back from the dead, and then one of the main characters is literally stuffed in a freezer so the zombie character can take over his role.
It is a thoroughly mediocre OVA from an era that had much better to offer, like the immediately preceding and utterly delightful God Bless Dancouga(to say nothing of icons like Bubblegum Crisis), and comes with nothing to recommend it beyond the name. So I watched it anyways, already KNOWING it was awful and takes a dump on the show.

And now I'm upset that this was the final entry of the series(Dancouga Nova being an almost entirely-unrelated thing). On top of it all, it was unneeded, with God Bless being a pretty much perfect end note already.

The most important question on my mind is a direct result of the series straddling the line between real robot and super robot genres. In a world where Earth has been nearly destroyed by godlike beings that could only be opposed by a single team of four pilots in a custom combiner no fewer than THREE times, why the hell haven't they built more than one Dancouga? It seems like it would be a pressing concern during any given military rebuild.

I was always of the understanding that in giant robot anime, the titular robot almost always requires a significant cost in time and resources to develop and maintain, so the world can only ever afford one (sometimes two) at a time. Also, I've realized why the baddies always target the goodies first once they become aware of their existence -- they know that once the good guys are defeated, there is nothing to prevent them from taking over ZA WARUDO!!!

    *insert maniacal laugh here* :D

That's the first SRW with the D in it! And one of the ones that uses a significant portion of Dancouga plot, too.
Though they were already fanfic-retconning deaths out. Shapiro dodges his chump death and moves to final boss status, because his megalomania will not be denied! (nor his hairspray and mascara)

I was always of the understanding that in giant robot anime, the titular robot almost always requires a significant cost in time and resources to develop and maintain, so the world can only ever afford one (sometimes two) at a time.
That's the problem with Dancouga hitting the realism angle. They built the first one during a war, starting AFTER the aliens invaded. And repaired it several times during said war. One would assume that without humanity against the ropes, they could afford to make a couple of them.
(They also almost completely rebuilt the thing after the first battle came to an end.)

Another common conceit for the traditional singular super robot is a critical materials shortage.
GaoGaiGar, for instance, is built around an alien mechalion, of which only one exists and they can't replicate. Mazinger Z uses technology invented by Dr. Kabuto, who took the secret of its construction to his grave(until his son comes back from the dead with his newer, better Mazinger that he built all on his own).

Learned today: Hot-blooded over-the-top super robot anime Gaogaigar was apparently created explicitly as a reaction to, and rejection of Evangelion's very popular brand of angsty drama.

"You say you have children forced to pilot war machines, gory violence, and people nuking Tokyo? Well, WE have a robot lion that combines with a bullet train and a stealth bomber to make a bigger robot! And then it combines with a robot tank to smash bad guys with a giant squeaky hammer!* And a police car that turns into a robot ninja! SO THERE!"

For a time I had avoided watching GaoGaiGar and Gurren Lagann because at first glance it looked like robot shows for kids (not to say they say they weren't, but you know what I mean :)) I was more Gundam and Macross and nothing else mattered, but I keep seeing them under most recommended mecha titles. When I finally gave in and tried watching both, it was non-stop until I finished. Only regret I had was why I hadn't watched them sooner and what now now that I've seen both. :P

    Gotta love those quotes too!
