Apple makes appliances that people compute with, not computers.

I thought Apple made fashion accesories that you can compute with.

I think you can blame Jef Raskin for that - Jobs just stole realized his original vision of the Mac into an actual shipping product... and it has been all downhill since then. However, I can't remember when the Mac became a cult.

Remember: it was Jobs who didn't wanted to have videogames or a color screen back when the competition was using those features to sell (even Apple's own Apple ][ line was among those)

My prediction: the new ARM Macs will sell, but mostly to people deeply invested into the Apple ecosystem (i.e. fanboys, Starbucks customers, iOS developers), while they will lose a sizeable chunk of market among the professional sector.

However, anything that hurts Intel is A-OK on my book, even if it comes from Apple!

Hey, if it manages to eat more market share, nice. Hurt intel plenty, please. And I’ll probably be trying to get ahold of one of these things eventually.

Btw, one thing I’ve learned from someone actually testing these things. The Application Binary Interface is identical to iOS.

One person I saw compiled something with the beta Universal Xcode, a console app. Then successfully ran it on their jailbroken iPhone.

Give it another fifteen years. They'll introduce a brand new architecture that they can control from start to finish, with no license fees of any sort. That'll show everyone.

Their prototype development hardware is benching faster at virtual x86 than Microsoft’s Surface Pro X does running the native ARM version of the same benchmark. Sweet.

Cool, now let's compare apples to apples.

The Surface X is a fine machine, but not the class of computer people would buy for doing "pro stuff", i.e., the class of stuff most Mac users used to do (edit video/audio/images, creative stuff, developing software on languages other than JavaScript).

Anyway, more bad news if you liked having a real GPU on your Mac: kiss goodbye your Radeons, as Apple is envisioning an "all-Apple" hardware strategy:
    https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2020/10631
    https://twitter.com/never_released/status/1280207485278789633
Yes, that means the only GPUs you'll get on those new ARMacs are custom iGPUs. Makes a lot of sense for their portables an low-end desktops, but this also spells more doom for the Pro lines. This effectively kills Mac as a gaming platform (unless that by "gaming" you mean "cellphone pay2win junk", and in that case you have no business at all buying computers). I don't envision AAA+++ game publishers porting their $60 flagships to ARMac - but then few of them really cared about the platform in first place (and you thought we Linux gamers already had it very rough), and I seriously doubt Apple can come up with a Radeon/GeForce-killer silicon.

Let's recap the whole GPU-on-Mac ordeal: nVidia was already "persona non grata" on recent MacOS versions, Intel is getting ejected even before the Xe becomes a retail product (if ever), and now AMD has been shown the way out of the building. I HOPE external Thunderbolt GPUs still remain a viable workaround for the few pros still commited to stay at the Apple camp, but knowing Apple, they don't want you making blockbuster movies or platinum disc music albums anymore on their computers - their platform still survives basically for iOS development.

But then, who knows? Maybe I'm wrong, a naysayer, have no dog on this race, and Apple does the impossible and convinces every pundit in the industry that x86 is dead and ARM is the new PC revolution and only dinosaurs will stick to Linux-powered x86 relics... but I'm not holding my breath for that. Too bad AMD can't just buy Intel and opensource the x86 architecture to everybody :/

RIP Mac Master Race, the PC Master Race will avenge you! We would bring in our brethren from the Amiga Master Race as well except they went extinct since last time.

Okay, no one wants to associate with them. Just makes all involved look bad.

In barely-related ARMac news, it seems Acorn RISC Machines, Inc. is the next hot deal on Softbank's fire sale, and A Certain Apple-Hated Green GPU Corporation is opening their mighty checkbook:
    https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24009177
    https://www.nextplatform.com/2020/07/31/the-dollars-and-sense-of-nvidia-paying-a-fortune-for-arm/
    https://www.theregister.com/2020/07/22/nvidia_arm_purchase/
(not going to link to Bloomberg - fuck their forced autoplay bullshittery, you shouldn't visit their site either)

So let me understand this disaster: Masayoshi Son, the half-Korean-half-Japanese telco man with more money than common sense, the same guy that promised to double ARM's headcount OR ELSE... has now burned nearly ONE HUNDRED FIFTY BILLION DOLLARS (a delicious slice of it from its friendly buddies at the Bloody Saudi Arabia Kingdom) in really REALLY stupid Silly Valley "startups" that have imploded in the last two years (from "coworking spaces" to "dog walking", but FROM AN APP™), and now he's really in the hurry to answer some really tough questions to shareholders. Oh, this also means he needs cash, pronto!

Thus, one of the former British jewels of the tech crown is now for sale because both Son and Silly Valley are fucktarded beyond all belief. Apparently the empire that designed the CPU architecture millenials use on their phones is far less valuable than the shitty "social crapps" they run on those, because unlike precious user data, you can't really monetize instruction sets that much :/

And now, nVidia wants to take advantage of that. Some don't give a fuck ("who cares what CPU is on my next iPhone? It's gonna be great anyway because Apple!"), a few are excited (mainly at the HPC scene), and most are really worried as this would create a rather huge conflict of interest (nVidia is an architectural licensee of ARM... and so are Qualcomm, Apple, Huawei, and a few other big-name players - do you want to buy your CPU cores from your competitor!?)

So... maybe investing in RISC-V isn't that much of a kookypants idea anymore?

just the fallout from licensing would be something to behold if big green goes thru with the purchase and changes some of the deals.

Unfortunately it seems ARM is not really an option for the big boys out there:

    - Apple: AFAIK they're "not interested" - their architectural license is enough for them, and their ultimate goal is the long-sought iProc™ ISA.

    - Microsoft: EEEEEEWWWWWWW! Plus they've tried (and failed) so many times with ARM-powered stuff, so don't count with 'em...

    - Intel: Double EEEEEEWWWWWWW! Thanks but no thanks. They're too busy figuring out how to refine their broken 14nm products even more, while their competition is already at the single-digit fabs with less-broken devices.

    - Huawei: Do you really want frickin' CHINA controlling your devices even more!??!?!?! The Angry Orange won't allow for it anyway.

    - AMD: Tempting, for sure. Except that they can't afford it at all, and it would create a huge conflict of interest for them - now that they finally got a decent CPU architecture in years, it would be suicide to confront the Ryzen/x86 guys with the ARM chaps (we can let the Mali GPU arm slide as they suck - better replace those with embedded Radeons instead!)

    - IBM: They're dead. And they already have POWER (which is now being opensourced, yay~!), so why bother?

    - Facebook: This is scary to even consider, as they COULD use those surveillance megabuckos to actually own ARM for no good reason at all... well, I guess they could bake the personal infosucking stuff right into the ISA

    - Amazon: Great, now every ARM license comes with a free Prime trial. But then I heard they're making a killing with custom ARM boxes on AWS, so who knows? Bezos is already swimmin' in cash, so maybe...

The other option would be an IPO, but then that's quite risky considering the surrounding post-COVID landscape.

    Two quick bits of news:

    1. Nvidia finally released some high end cards that are (kind-of) affordable for once, yay! (2080 Ti performance for $500 yes please!)

    2. World of Warcraft will now require SSDs. Finally a reason to move from dog-slow HDDs other than loading times! :D

Of course, sucks for everyone stuck on a mech, but... SSDs cost $30 bucks nowadays for a 256 GB option, so if you still haven't upgraded now is the time to do so. I wonder how long before SATA starts disappearing from new motherboards...

Why would SATA disappear? Large drives (4TB and above) are still useful, and there might even some folks with optical drives...

I'm probably going to get a GTX 3080 (right now I'm still on 970 SLI) for Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Zero Dawn. Then perhaps a good 1440p display in the future.

    My current setup: Super Famicom ("2/1/3" SNS-CPU-1CHIP-02) → SCART → OSSC → StarTech USB3HDCAP → AmaRecTV 3.10

The consensus is that the new cards are cheaper in order to preempt AMDs forthcoming entries. They couldn’t get AMD to reveal first, so they’re striking quick and strong.

As for SSDs, the best thing they do is shut the hell up. HDDs are the noisiest component. Getting rid of that noise is a huge win. Faster random access is a close second.

And I'm still waiting on AMD, assuming I ever upgrade my GPU again. I'm still happily on my RX 480 8GB. It plays the games I need it to, near perfectly. And it runs the Wayland desktop environments I care about when I use them, which is more than I can say for Novideo "let's not implement this thing that FOSS needs, because we'd have to GPL our driver, and people would figure out that we feature gate devices completely in software".

I thought the prices were because the 2K series landed with a wet splat and they had to slash prices to get them to start moving. They'd rather not have to put a "3000 Super" line out in six months.
