No, I am not saying that they have the same means. To be clear here, I am saying they have different means and that women are less competent than men.

The study is saying men and women have the same means and are equally competent. The study aims to prove this by creating a model where they have the same means but still have differences at the top.

You can't just claim that men and women are equally competent, however, and then come up with a model where men have an average score a standard deviation above women and call it a day, unless of course you want to argue that women are as competent as men but still get lower scores.

It's a shame N64 emulation never went anywhere. It's kind of the black sheep. For anything earlier (NES, SNES) there are tons of great emulators, and Dolphin is splendid. But the Nintendo 64? Mupen64plus and Project64 both have dubious performance and poor accuracy, and those are the state of the art.

Oddly enough, N64 had the shortest console -> emulator delay (3 years) in history, but probably one of the longest console -> perfect emulator delays (23 years and counting) for non-obscure values of console. Higan could run every commercial title by 2006 (?), which is only 15 years for comparison. Maybe they're related - with Project64 already Good Enough™ and N64 games not lending themselves well to keyboard play, perhaps it doesn't really take off.

Still a shame though; now I just get the feeling it's too late. All consoles have their "window of opportunity" for emulation, and the N64 appears to have missed it. Maybe CEN64 will bring about a renaissance in the field just like Higan did, but it looks pretty gloomy.

Of all the things in the world that could fizzle out, I guess emulation of an old video game console at the end of the day is one of the least bad ones to do so.

Re-read the study carefully. Now you are just making shit up again.

There is an established gap already, and that gap will be reflected in means. For any study to make the claim you are proposing it would have been shot dead at review and laughed out of the room, since it is statistics 101.

That study is riddled with mathematical and grammatical errors. So whatever review process they have appears to mostly be a rubber-stamp one, or else they'd have been told to fix them before publishing. Psychology does have infamously lax review standards, after all.
(this doesn't necessarily mean all psych studies are wrong, nor that all sloppy studies are wrong, but it means you can't blindly trust the review process.)

But it does indeed make that claim:
Even if two groups have the same average (mean) and variability (s.d.), the highest performing individuals are more likely to come from the larger group.
This is their explanation. Nothing about means being different, it expressly only deals with the differences at the tails.
In the end too, they mention nothing about different means:
Given a distribution with known mean μ and s.d. δ, this final formula defines the expectation of the kth highest value within a sample of size n, valid provided n is large and k is relatively small. As such, it affords us a method for estimating the expected rating of a range of top players from the German chess data for each gender; indeed, we use the formula to calculate the expected ratings of the top 100 male and female players using the mean and s.d. of the population (the German chess data), in turn allowing us to determine the expected difference in rating between those players.

If they'd have used different male and female means, they'd have said so, right? Then it'd have said "populations" or some such. It seems you make a claim vastly different from the article's. Which I'd be fine to discuss, but you can't claim it has anything to do with the results of the so-called study.

Can you point to anywhere in the study where they suggest the means should be different?
The only rebuttal article - and this is a quite controversial opinion mind you, so for it to only have a single rebuttal piece is in itself a testament of strength - attacks the method for predicting too high numbers. This does not matter however, as it predicts both pools as equally wrong and the purpose is not to predict skill, but skill gap. The model may need some calibration for sure, but is otherwise fine.

So, nope. Just another case of illiteracy. We are done now. :)

That there's not any rebuttal articles doesn't mean too much. If the study is poorly done, it remains this whether it has one or a hundred rebuttal articles, and if the study is well done, it remains this whether it has one or a hundred rebuttal articles too.

It levies another more striking criticism, my main gripe, that of the model not fitting well. If participation rates alone explained it, then the woman with female rank k should have an expected total rank of k*(n/nf). And with statistical methods, you can apparently calculate a confidence interval. Regardless, it's apparent that that model doesn't fit all too well:

For instance, if you had 50 men and 50 women, then the fifth best woman should have the tenth best overall ranking provided their scores were drawn from the same distribution. If you had 50 men and 10 women, the second best woman should have about the same ranking as the tenth best man. And if they don't, then the scores aren't drawn from the same distribution, which was my claim all along.

Wasn't the GBA's console → emulation delay like -1 days?

The thitherto shortest delay anyway. Does the GBA have a cycle-accurate emulator?

Well there's Angrylion RDP Plus.

Sure, although it's way too slow for practical use. It's a shame nobody did more research on the UltraHLE approach. Really, it's a shame the authors got spooked and ran. A shame there wasn't any Tor back in those days. Then again, people now don't do too much anonymous development nowadays either, so maybe it wouldn't have helped. Bitcoin and Higan are the only two counterexamples I can think of, and none of them used hidden services or anything fancy like that.

Am considering purchasing a PC to essentially act as a local server to files I have and am looking for recommendations.

How low are your standards and how high is your budget?

For values of (low, low), consider one of the Chinese Raspberry Pi clones, such as Orange Pi or Banana Pi. That'll set you back $20, give or take.
For values of (medium, medium), consider the Raspberry Pi or its slightly nicer Chinese clones, such as the ODROID family. $50 or so.
For values of (high, high), buy an old computer off of your local equivalent of Craigslist. Anywhere between $10-$1000.

Personally, I'd just buy the cheapest garbage I could find and then get decent external hard drives/hard drive enclosures and run Tahoe-LAFS (one China Pi per drive/enclosure, they're dirt cheap anyway) in case the Chinese try to pull a fast one on you.

That might have poor I/O performance though. If you need that then I'd recommend buying an old computer, which shouldn't be too expensive but takes a bit more time, especially if you want one with a receipt.

A zero-budget option would be to see if you've got any old laptops lying around. Those make for great servers with their low power consumption, silent fans (if you're lucky or install passive cooling), and built-in UPS.

No, I expressed myself clumsily. I do understand the assertion that is being made ("differences in participation rates explain differences in means"), what I don't understand is by which mechanism this would work - a study has been linked which explains differences at the tails, but I can't see how this would have any bearing on the means. The "broad strokes" of the latter effect is what I'm talking about. This has not been discussed for six pages or anywhere close to it.

An analogy: I understand how a smaller country's top ten high earners' average income would be lower than those of a bigger but equally rich country, or for that of matter a substantially bigger but poorer country. What I don't understand is how the smaller country would have a lower median income than its equally rich but bigger counterpart. This seems completely counter-intuitive and is not an effect I have ever heard of. And I would appreciate a pointer, for instance if there is a name for it, or if it's mentioned in passing in some article.

If the point is that these types of matters are not acceptable to discuss, or for that matter if you just think that it's an unacceptable derail, then that's another thing entirely and I understand - your forum, your rules, and it does seem like the discussion, or at least my position on the matter, could be construed to be in violation of them, specifically Don't 3b. ("... discriminating ... remarks are not welcome on this board.")

Does the RDP feed data back into the system or itself (e.g. internal state) in any way? Say you had a graphics plugin that just returns a black screen for all inputs. If you fed it an input movie recorded with an accurate plugin that completes the game, would it desync? And could you switch back to the accurate plugin to render only the ending?

Does this change the IMEI as broadcasted to the cell towers, or just the internal representation the phone uses for e.g. WhatsApp?

I don't follow. Isn't IMEI burned into the baseband independently of everything else? I've seen some guides on how to "change IMEI," and it only ever changed what the phone showed in settings and to apps. And why would it be illegal to change it?

If I recall correctly, there is an explicit provision in the law here (and I am sure many other countries) that network operators may not block access for devices as long as they are in compliance with the standards and do not cause harm to the network, and also must make available the standards for connecting to the network.

Seems like you could make good money refurbishing IMEI locked phones then. Although then you might as well just buy iCloud locked iPhones without receipts and replace the logic board and whatever else for far more profit.

you can actually "repair" your IMEI yourself using nothing but the phone itself

Do you need to reboot it for this? Seems like you could vastly improve privacy by randomizing IMEI per SIM card/session combination. Curious that none of the 'privacy phones' did this.

But why'd it be illegal to change it though? I can only find information on cloning, which seems more like outright fraud than illegal modification. Surely, using an IMEI nobody else is using should be A-OK?

You have trouble with getting your PulseAudio to stay off? Mine has trouble staying on. Whenever I run out of memory, it dies, and I have to run `pulseaudio &` to get it to turn back on again - it can't do it itself, and the recommended way (start-pulseaudio-x11) fails with a cryptic error message.

Posted by CaptainJistuce
So you can redirect sound to a sound device on a different computer across the internet, obviously. Isn't that how everyone uses their computer?

Well, that's equivalent exchange for you. If you remove one such protocol, another must take its place. X is more disgusting than PulseAudio, so I think we got a good deal.

It's also limited to Japanese residents. If I understand correctly, they're just saying you could make fan whatever. Which I think you could before too.

It's an interesting concept for sure and will be interesting to see how it plays out though. Never liked that series, and I can't seem to understand why it's so highly ranked. Probably the worst one that I didn't have the sense to drop, to be honest.

It had really nice music and animation though, so maybe that's why people rate it so highly.

Just keep in mind that we weren't done yet. It's really only like maybe 65% finished, code and documentation wise. This codebase is an absolute treasure for preservation sake. Turns out if you compile your ROM unoptimized its really easy to get the uncompiled code from the assembly. Guess Nintendo should have double checked their CFLAGS before shipping US and JP.

Uh, aren't you supposed to compile peformance-critical software with optimizations on?

Great work though. Here's the original thread.

Well, for sure. X11 is for graphics and PA for audio, completely unrelated. My point was just that you've got equivalent exchange going on. Remove one ugly remote control protocol, another one appears.

Except it wasn't an exchange. X11 was not removed when PulseAudiargh was added. It was just another festering boil.
I mean it in the abstract sense; the level of suck remains constant.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EquivalentExchange

The bright spot was that it only infested Linux instead of all the Unix clones, derivatives, and knockoffs, but really that just aggravated the "develop for Linux and screw portability" issue that'd already ripped through the community so even THAT wasn't a win.
Not sure that's all bad. If you don't need to worry about portability you can develop much faster, and if your application would reach any level of success you can fix it then, or hope some *BSD user does it.

Personally, I think PulseAudio is solidly okay. The only non-"audio goes out from computer and straight into headphones without modification" use-cases I've had with it involved remapping the right channel to the left and downmixing to mono, and both of those worked fine.

It has some kinks, but most of them have either resolved themselves with time or are too small to worry about.

Also, none of the "privacy phones" implement this because that's, well, illegal.

How come none of them let you swap out the baseband then? Those are generally quite cheap (<$1), so if you'd build it so that the baseband and SIM pop out at once and ship it with a pack of ten you could probably solve that whole issue.
Then again, you could solve the whole triangulation problem by making your own baseband, and nobody does this either.
I reckon the answer is simple, as always: the people running it are just out to get a quick buck and don't actually care too much about privacy, and the only people who actually care would just buy burner phones.

Oh, and having a phone which allows its IMEI/ESN/MEID/whatever to be changed at will means that if yours ever get stolen, you have a fat chance in hell to recover it, because no telco can't track it anymore. It's like selling cars with forged serial numbers, which is a couple orders of magnitude worse than stealing $200 plastic slabs.

Has that ever helped, though? Short of iCloud lock, which is now broken, I'm skeptical. I mean, you can just swap out the logic board.
It would have helped with ordinary phones, but now?

Posted by sureanem
That's the most typical rationale, yeah - that dates back to the era of analog cellphones, where the security ranged between "none" and "a joke". Technology has marched on, but the laws are still stuck in the stone age. Fraud is still illegal, no matter how you commit to it. That's the typical case of "we can't have nice things because there are assholes in the world".

I think it's legal in the USA as long as you don't clone them.

I'd bet on it being the carriers' greed/incompetence. Fuck cell carriers, worst industry in existence. Should all be nationalized. That would also solve the whole issue of security-reducing backdoors, efficiency-reducing legal wrangling, and people getting their personal information exposed for trivialities under anti-terrorism legislation.

But that's for Politics! Something about cheese!.
