I read it because I read everything.

I have dim hopes for the kung flu going away any time soon. And The Vaccine(tm) is a lie perpetuated by those with an interest in downplaying the problem. To my understanding coronaviruses mutate rapidly, making them very difficult to vaccinate against and rendering any vaccine created useful for only a few months.
I'm just hoping that SARS-CoV2 mutates into a less virulent form.

It has been mutating into a less virulent form. Testing is showing strains with significant genome deletion, so it’s not a very hardy virus. As a result, vaccines are going to be at least somewhat effective.

Of course, there’s no logical reason for relaxing restrictions in the US. The number of cases has never stopped increasing, and it’s the worst it’s ever been right now. The Trumpies are worried about their stock portfolios decreasing, though, and that’s too steep a cost for continuing safe practices.

It's official now: the Mac is DEAD officially switching to ARM:
https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2020/06/apple-announces-mac-transition-to-apple-silicon/
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Apple-Going-In-House-Silicon

This now puts those longstanding rumors to rest: Intel is dead to Apple, and so are Real Computers for them too.
A matching macOS release has now been announced too ("Big Sur", WTF is with those silly codenames!?) with Rosetta 2 for limited x86 compatibility. Oh, and the convergence of macOS and iAppliancesOS is happening too, as those new Macs will natively run iDevices apps (so I guess those will be getting touchscreens out of the box?)

Kiss goodbye your very expensive creative tools and Steam games, Mac guys. Enjoy the ride while it lasts.

No word on the future of the Mac Pro.

Apple could have revived PowerPC (remember that they bought a PPC arch licensee years ago, PA Semi), but nope, they had to switch to cellphone CPUs :/ Today is a sad day for the future of personal computers, no matter what lies those ARM pundits want us to believe. Oh, this also kills Boot Camp and seriously threaten the future of bare metal Linux on Macs (for those that actually see Macs as "overpriced half-decent PCs" instead of "Think Different™") - Apple's "solution" to the latter is "you can always have VMs" instead of "wipe macOS and install Debian".

Don't worry about that. Just sit back with your Netflix and Youtube and Facepage and let the Geniuses at Apple handle the programming.

The lack of subsequent stimulus programs has been on Congress, not Trump. Congress is going to insist they did what was needed and the plague is over and it is time for all y'all slackers to get back to work!

Trump likes to call them the "do-nothing" Democrats, but Mitch McConnell is simply refusing to allow anything but judicial appointments come to the floor.

Then there's the fact that most of the stimulus money goes where it's not needed. 300 billion dollars for the airline industry? They've been making record profits for years--they could sit on their stash forever without any trouble. That money only serves to continue to inflate the stock and help rich stock holders, not normal citizens.

Not unexpected. The company is now run by ‘80s Guy from Futurama. No product? No problem! They’ll get back on top with brand imaging!

The consensus is that the new cards are cheaper in order to preempt AMDs forthcoming entries. They couldn’t get AMD to reveal first, so they’re striking quick and strong.

As for SSDs, the best thing they do is shut the hell up. HDDs are the noisiest component. Getting rid of that noise is a huge win. Faster random access is a close second.

"will we have games other than bloody FPSes or EA sportsball games?"

Yeah, it’s funny when they describe performance as “get the advantage on others” and latency improvements as “your gun aims more quickly.” Don’t these people get tired of role playing as a buzz-cut burly army guy that shoots and kills things? Or pretending that they somehow made it in sports?

I'm curious how 3D graphics work in SM64 ports. As I understand it, N64 graphics are notoriously subtle and difficult to implement on modern APIs, which is why AngryLion's renderer is so well-respected. Did somebody crack the code for SM64, or is it just that supporting SM64 specifically is a lot easier than supporting every N64 game at once?

It’s not that complicated, just look at the source. There’s an abstraction layer that converts to GL and some others. It implements what Mario uses. It was never a complicated game in the first place.

Honest question: Do ATi AMD GPU drivers still suck?

Not only the Linux ones.

Depends who you ask?

I've not had any issues with them for several years. Others swear they've had nothing BUT issues.

I do know the drivers for the RX5000 series were, ummm, extremely fucked, at and shortly after launch. Don't know if they ever got better.
But it seems an isolated incident to me.

Yeah, I received a 5700xt for Christmas last year, and I had to help reproducing a couple issues I had with the drivers. I think they’re in a good state now, though. I went through a couple Windows games without any problems.

Polaris cards show fewer complaints, but I’m not having any more trouble with Navi other than those driver nits.

Yes, Sony overengineered to hell and back the cooling system, but if this means less RMAs, and dead silent, ice-cold gaming sessions, who cares if this thing is bigger than your... head?

Damn straight. You don't buy a console to look at. What will reviewers come up with next?--it doesn't have a display with a notch, so it's not as good as an iphone? A huge fan means less noise, and I'm all for it.

Still, it beats the Xbox Sex proprietary SSDs (because MS had to screw up user-friendly storage expansion options, AGAIN).

Yeah, they had an opportunity to be seen as more flexible but blew it, revealing their one and only supported proprietary expansion.

Still haven't received our mail in ballots yet.
Don't worry, they've already been picked up and filled out for you. Cobra Commander/Destro's winning this year for sure!

If you don’t vote seriously this time I’ll disown you. :) We can’t take the chance of the worst case happening.

They have copy/paste'd the "master->primary" argument from other places without stopping to consider if they are using master in the same context. I would've used the term "central password" or "governing password" if I were going to change this specific instance of master.

I would probably use the phrase “global password.”

Regardless, the debate over “master” was brought up by a white guy and I’d wager that nobody of any discriminated group was ever offended over this. It never even occurred to me that this use of “master” could be related to that sort of thing. It’s like a master copy, the ones that all the others copy from, something derived from the master-apprentice relationship, not slavery

Any time you see someone going on about how arcane xyz minutiae is oppressive to whomever - and that person is not a member of the oppressed group they are supposedly defending - you can rest assured that they are pulling the wool over your eyes about something else.

I mean, altruism is a thing that exists. It's so common we even have a word for it.

Yeah, but it’s not usually altruistic, it’s intended to garner platitudes or credit. The initiator is narcissistic and wants attention. The far right call it “virtue signaling.” I used to refer to it as “offended by proxy.” It actually steals focus from the marginalized party, so it’s indirect discrimination.

I'm not going to claim that everybody who does that is being altruistic, but it seems equally wrong to claim that nobody is.

I’m not claiming that either. This is the internet, so it would be ambiguous if the culprit were anonymous, but if you can look up examples of the person’s personality then you can guess what their intention is. From what I’ve seen I’m clearly pessimistic about the whole notion. I realize that me being that way doesn’t help the issue. I’ll try not to assume so much in the future.

Nice computerizers, but calling them "a game-changer"? Too far fetched for now, IMO.

I see a lot of comments elsewhere saying stuff like "wait till this gets into desktops/servers!"

They're overlooking the fact that the M1 is only fast because it omits a lot of important and hard-to-implement stuff.

First, let's look at that 16GB RAM. That's the limit because that's the technological limit. No SoC uses more than that because RAM can't get any smaller to fit in PoP tech. What happens if you need more and have to go off chip? Performance loss.

Second, GPUs. Once again, they're in the same chip and current physical limits prevent anything better. Heat is a significant problem. Once they go external, they lose the shared RAM, coherency, and a huge performance advantage.

Third, servers. They absolutely need more than 16GB of RAM. They need to communicate with other CPUs. The M1 has no bus, because everything is on-chip. Apple has to invent a new bus protocol or interconnect and somehow outperform the existing ones. And because this is external, the communications physically can't be as fast.

Fourth, let's consider the competition:

AMD: The Zen 2 laptop chips match performance at the same wattage. Apple has a significant space advantage because they monopolized TSMC 5nm. Zen 3 has a 20% increased IPC over Zen 2, and 5nm will benefit power consumption further.

Other ARM: Surprise! Other companies already have ARM server chips like this that perform well, and they've already got solutions to the external infrastructure problem.

TLDR, Apple has an embedded processor that's faster by virtue of being less general-purpose--it's perfectly made to fit the use case of a small personal device. It can only maintain its advantage and get faster by switching to smaller manufacturing nodes. Ironically, Apple once again has a product that has to get smaller every year to appease marketing.
